Since I reached the charming age of puberty
And began to think of feminine curls
Like a show that's typically Shuberty
I have always had a multitude of girls
But now that a married man at last am I
How aware of my dear departed past am I
Where is the life that late I led?
Where is it now? Totally dead!
Where is the fun I used to find?
Where has it gone? Gone with the wind!
A married life may all be well
But raising an heir could never compare
With raising a bit of hell
So I repeat what first I said
Where is the life that late I...
In dear Milano, where are you Momo?
Still selling those pictures of the scriptures in the duomo
And Carolina, where are you, 'lina?
Still peddling your pizza in the streets-a Toremina
And in Firenze, where are you Alice?
Still there in your pretty itty-bitty pity palace
And sweet Lucretia, so young and gay
What scandalous doings in the ruins of Pompeii
Where is the life that late I led?
Where is it now? Totally dead!
Where is the fun I used to find?
Where has it gone? Gone with the wind!
The marriage game is quite all right
Yes during the day it's easy to play
But oh what a bore at night
So I repeat what first I said
Where is the life that late I...
Where is Rebecca? My Becky-wecky-oh
Could still she be cruising that amusing Pontevecchio?
Where is Fedora, the wild virago?
It's lucky I missed her gangster sister from Chicago
Where is Venetia, who loved to chat so?
Could still she be drinking in her stinking pink palazzo?
And lovely Lisa, where are you Lisa?
You gave a new meaning to the Leaning Tower of Piza
Where is the life that late I led?
Where is it now? Totally dead!
Where is the fun I used to find?
Where has it gone? Gone with the wind!
I've oft been told of nuptial bliss
But what do you do at quarter to two
With only a shrew to kiss?
So I repeat what first I said
Where is the life that late I led?
Wonderful voice, great acting and no one ever looked better in tights!
god I love his laugh what a hansdome man
Such a talented and extremely Handsome man
Howard Keel was a wonderful singer and performer.
You all prolly dont give a shit but does someone know a way to get back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot my password. I love any assistance you can offer me.
@Jamison Benjamin instablaster ;)
Fabulous singer and missed so much 😥😥😥
love his voice
My kingdom for Howard Keel
gorgeous voice
One of the greatest baritones in the business!
I forgot how terrific Howard Keel is in this number! He is first class. We're lucky that we have him on film doing this great Cole Porter number. I'm wondering how kindly Porter took to having to launder some of his lyrics for MGM's audience.
You mean Warner’s audience, right?
I first saw him in Seven Brides in the 80's...then my Mum played me this movie too. I thought he was yummy in this role especially. Only to later be watching him on Dallas on TV as an old man! And not understanding how he aged so quickly!!!
From what I read about Porter working on Silk Stockings, he didn’t push back on requests for changes. He just did them.
@@Knutwolf No, this is an MGM film.
Yes. MGM. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiss_Me_Kate_(film)
One of my favorite Keel moments. Being basically a bass/baritone in range it was considerate to transpose this great number for Keel down a half tone.
The film version KISS ME, KATE was decent but some censoring some of the spoken & musical text. At least this number was left pretty much intact & Keel, at this time, was the ideal for this role as MacRae was for Billy Bigelow in CAROUSEL 3 years later.
Wow, he can rock those tights😘
Love those Cole Porter lyrics..
great singer
Just loved this film with one of the great basses from the past! Howard was a huge inspiration to my own interpretation of the role.
I bet that this is a Precursor to “Mambo #5,” or perhaps it’s inspiration… Both are fun songs…
Kudos to William Henkin and Sheryll McManus - our Petruchio and Kate from Cass Tech's production of Kate --- the greatest performance on earth circa 1961-1962:)
"Hell" and "puberty" were too shocking for the movie version.
if Cole Porter had any real friends they would have stopped him from publishing a puberty/Schuberty rhyme. that said... I love it
And yet they left in the dirtiest joke of all.
Yup yup.
I’m sorry, you’re dissing Keel on ONE performance that was probably outside his element? Every actor has done stinking performances. I have seen him in roles that are not Porter, and he still does a great job.
I can't believe those '50s censors kept in the 'Tower of Pisa' line!
I like to imagine someone started to point it out when they went over the song.
"Shouldn't we rewrite that line?"
"Why?"
"Oh... nothing."
@Barbara Ann - Do your parents know you're on the internet?
@Barbara Ann Think very carefully about the implications of "we gave new meaning to the leaning tower of Pisa..."
Wouldn't be surprised if the great operatic bass Samuel Ramey was influenced by Keel's persona in this movie.
Hey, forget about Sam Ramey, Keel is an absolute dead ringer look-a-like or Ramey's bass confrere contemporary, James Morris while I'd like to see Keel trying to sing Wotan!
I had the exact same thought
Keel was not a bass. Actually he wasn’t even a bass baritone. He was a Baritone. The roles that he sang were baritone roles.
@@miyoshiumeki What's the point? I said Ramey might have been influenced by Keel's "persona"
... in this movie, not that they have the same voice range. But, as a matter of fact, early on Keel was told that he had basso cantante voice, i.e. he was a bass baritone. The fact that he was a baritone in Broadway musicals is because that's how the music was written, and he could handle the job.

Who has seen Howard Keel in the Sci Fi movie Day of the Triffids? The star of this show is Cole Porter.
I've tried to like modern musicals, but I just.............. Can't. It's slightly older people , yes............ But singing razor-sharp witty lyrics, to ear-worm tunes....... As opposed to pubescents belting predictable wails about their EMOTIoNS into microphones.......... OKOK, I'm evil and bad and horrible. But when did you last just lean back in your seat while watching a musical, and think, "Wow, that was CLEVER!" ??
everytime I rewatch this I think he says "finger feminine girls"
What one earth was wrong with saying, "Since I've reached the charming age of puberty"? Or was it that they figured hicks in the sticks wouldn't get the rhyme: "a show that typically Shuberty."?
Even more ironic is that they chose NOT to cut "....you gave a new meaning to the leaning tower of Pisa" Now THAT is easily the most risqué line in the song! Censorship is such an odd thing.
What movie is this from ????
Kiss Me Kate!
Where did that runway come from? It isn't there the rest of the movie. Perhaps it just juts out for that number, knocking down some musicians and audience members, but oh well.
Love Bill Clinton's version!
