Just for those who want to know: "Metropolis" is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction film directed by Fritz Lang, from a 1925 novel written by Thea von Harbou and Fritz Lang of the same title. This "science-fiction" movie is the first of the genre to ever be produced which took 17 months to film and cost in today's equivalency of €21 million to make. Lang's depiction of urbanism as ".... the city as an integrated character, an interactive embodiment of sociological stratification and social strife ...." was inspired from a 1924 visit to Manhattan, New York's skyline with its daunting atmosphere, encapsulating an intriguing interactivity between the cityscapes attributes and its mass population inhabitants. Lang's movie was almost lost to the ravages of time, when Giorgio Moroder's sleek and sensual, all synthesizer based song "I Feel Love" featuring Donna Summer, aa a single music release, started and ushered in the 80's New-Wave music into the collective consciousness in 1977. Moroder initially restored the movie masterpiece, but it's since been 95% restored, due in part, to a lucky discovery in an Argentine museum vault. Metropolis' unusual visual appeal has since been replicated by numerous science-fiction movies like Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" as a basis for built environments utilizing the fearful aspects of social-psychology within an urban context and its been continually added onto by other works, such as; "Akira", "RoboCop", "Total Recall", "Dark City", "The Matrix", "Ghost in The Shell", as the manifestation of Cinematic Dystopian explorations in genre literary interventions of Neo-Noir, Cyber-Punk, Dystopian-Doom, Steam-Punk, Psy-Fi Horror, as well as Post-Apocalyptic typologies'. However, no author has had more of their novels interpreted into movies like the venerated Philip K. Dick and was credited for first use of the term "the matrix" at a science-fiction writers symposium. These science-fiction based speculations have fostered countless debates among Painters, Musicians, Futurists, Social Psychologists, Architects, and Urban Designers spurring on the discussion of "self" within every form of "built" environments. Norman Klein's "The History of Forgetting" is a must have for the serious reader, who contemplates these science-fiction scenarios. Retro New-wave music is quickly becoming another avenue of exploration, which will inevitably seek out it's own visual self-identity; but until then, Vandal Moon's used of "Metropolis" is spot-on.
In my top 5 favorite films. I have seen at least 6 versions, including the Moroder version and the most recent release with the restored orchestral score. My favorite by far is the one with the experimental jazz soundtrack, which emphasizes the mechanized lifestyle of the underground workers. It was the first one I saw, and I've been looking for it for over a decade. Does anyone know this version, and if so, which imprint name or how to search for it online? Thanks! :)
