From Wikipedia:
The Bayonne Bridge is an arch bridge spanning the Kill Van Kull connecting Bayonne, New Jersey, with Staten Island, New York City. It carries New York State Route 440 (NY 440) and New Jersey Route 440. It is the sixth-longest steel arch bridge in the world, and it was the longest in the world at the time of its completion. The bridge is also one of four connecting New Jersey with Staten Island; the other two roadway bridges are the Goethals Bridge in Elizabeth and Outerbridge Crossing (which also carries Route 440) in Perth Amboy, and the rail-only span is the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge, all of which cross the Arthur Kill.
The original 151-foot (46 m) roadway carried two lanes of motor traffic in each direction, as well as a walkway. Completed in 1931, the Bayonne Bridge was built by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which still operates the bridge. It was designed by Swiss master bridge-builder Othmar Ammann and architect Cass Gilbert.
A project to provide increased clearance required to accommodate New Panamax ships began in 2013, and was completed in two stages between 2017 and 2019. The new roadways each carry two lanes of unidirectional motor traffic plus shoulders for disabled vehicles in addition to a separate path for pedestrians and bicyclists, which opened on May 24, 2019. The desired navigational clearance was achieved June 8, 2017.
Fun fact, the reason they had to raise this bridge is because the Suez Canal (yes, the Suez Canal that was recently blocked by a skip that ran aground) recently got an upgrade in the size of ships it can accommodate. The Suez Canal is so important to international shipping that ships are built specifically to the maximum size that will fit in the Suez Canal, known as “Suezmax”. And ports around the world are also built to accommodate Suezmax ships (and Panamax ships, which are the largest size that can fit in the Panama Canal.)
After the Suez Canal got upgraded, the Bayonne bridge was suddenly no longer high enough to accommodate the new, bigger Suezmax ships passing under it. So the bridge had to be raised.
Savannahs talmadge bridge having that same issue. Despite it not even being 40 years old it already needs a height adjustment (or full blown replacement) cause the newer Panamax ships can’t fit under the bridge.
This is the first time I was on the new roadway since it was raised it higher to accommodate larger ships. Thanks for the ride.
Nice ride from Staten Island NY to Bayonne NJ from crossing the Bayonne Bridge
0:00-1:56 Sounds like Indiana.
The one Staten Island to New Jersey crossing I haven't been over yet. I've done Goethals and Outerbridge numerous times but never the Bayonne Bridge.
My dad used to live in bayonne in 2019 and moved out December 2022 in bloomfield
You can see the Bridge from Brooklyn going through and to the Hugh L Carey Tunnel
This is the shortcut between I-78 exits 3-58 NJ PA exit 75 & JFK Airport since you cutdown the distance by 4 miles from 93 mi to 89 mi
The other bridge is a mess
I78 and i95 both merging into a two lane bridge. They should build a twin.
I thought it was destroyed when the aliens attacked.
🤗🇲🇽
This bridge is mixed with FL/Maryland/Indiana/NJ
my friend said he knows a guy who crashed into the divider on this bridge going 140 flew thru the wondshield then the metal rails n flew into the water n survived lol
