Regarding the photo at 2:49 . Many years I went to an informal meeting of railway enthusiasts where John Le Cren was the guest speaker. He was a staff photographer for NZR. He specifically mentioned that photo with Aramoana’s propellers out of the water. You can imagine the stress the propellers went through, rising out of the water then crashing back in again.
Sometime later, engineers found a crack in one of her propeller shafts.. They tried to get it repaired under warranty but unfortunately the ships builders got a hold of the photo as well. Needless to say, they declined to repair the shaft under warranty and NZR footed the bill.

I really enjoyed that :) I remember sailing on the Aratika and Arahura back in the 80s. they were both still in the older NZR scheme. Awesome bits of steel.

I still remember when the Arahura started sailing.... She was called the "new ferry" we went to the sounds fours times a year, so those ships had a huge impression on me! The Arahura could cruise 2 knots faster than the others and if Wellington had a power outage, her deaisal/electric engines could power the important parts of the city.!!

What happens if you cross a North island Ferry with a South island Ferry. You will get a Interisland Ferry.

Had a horrendous crossing on the Aramoana in 72. Took us 5.5 hours to do the trip, and the waves the washing over the ship bridge to stern.

The Arahanga and Aratika were always my favourites, with their beautiful proportions and sweeping shearlines. The Aranui was a cutie. The Arahura was a great ship from a different (modern) era. The Aratere whuost being souless and ugly, is at least an Interislander. The later used imports are awful and have no place here.
