I’m now a pensioner - worked all my life until I was 64 and retired then - continuing to work a further 4 years over and above retirement age. My husband and I just worked all our lives, me doing three menial jobs in between having and bringing up our 3 kids. Sent them all to university, paid full whack for all of them. Never claimed a penny in benefits - didn’t even know if we were entitled to them. I had so many jobs - one as a barmaid in a night club, not getting in until 4 in the morning and up again at 8 to get them to school. We got through it, no expensive cars and a very much less than beautiful house and absolutely no take-away meals. We both worked over and above our pension age and now they call my pension a ‘benefit’ !!!!! I consider my pension has been earned by not taking benefits and working and paying all my National Insurance contributions over all these years. For my trouble, I can’t claim pension credit so get nothing in the form of help apart from a lousy £10 Christmas box (which is no use nor ornament to me) so is going to the Dogs Home. The bus pass is handy and up to now I’ve had £100 per year fuel allowance. Why do people think that pensioners get all sorts of freebies? Most of us just don’t.
I know how you feel worked for 41years average 70+ hours a week, weekends served my country then heart problems can not work hate claiming anything I have not worked for and now worry about living month to month and made to feel even worse being told I am scrounging but paid in all my life would love to get back to work

My dad worked until he was 76 - he carried on for six years after a stroke. When he was 82 he had another stroke and ended up in a care home for the last few months of his life. He'd worked and paid taxes all his life, and in the 1970s had a full-time day job and an evening job just to make ends meet. When he died he didn't have a penny to his name.
The main problems are the majority of the British people are soft touch and generous to these illegal economic migrants crossing the channel. The main opposition parties are unhelpful to deal with it.

I should technically be collecting my pension, but have to wait another 2 years. The Government changed the age of retirement. I know we are classified social class 5 people. I manage on my benefits and am grateful for them. But surely the panel would not like to live on Jobseeker’s Allowance or Universal Credit. We are not all shirkers. I started work in 1975. So stop denigrating us all into one umbrella. I thought this country was meant to look after tge vulnerable and in need.

Now at 63, I am constantly having to justify, both to the DWP, and it seems, society in general, my being unable to work and on benefits. It infuriates me to be lumped in with the workshy, or seemingly despised by some people, as now on this panel. Not all of us who are in receipt of Benefits have never paid into the system. Quite the opposite, and thus deserve to be looked after. Maybe if we in Britain were not throwing money at illegal immigrants, or helping to fund another nations war, then everyone would be better off.

Actually there are people working full time and still have to get some help with housing benefit, which of course is subsiding landlords. To enable people to get off benefits start paying liveable wages. Bring production back to this country and bring back apprenticeships for our young.
