Thanks for the video. I wasn't sure if my summit balancer was seated properly but through your video I am able to tell it is! Now time to slap in the new bolt and torque it up. Fyi if anyone is also doing this on an automatic, the crank will spin. You'll need a tool to lock the flywheel by removing the starter and installing the tool. I didn't want to go down this route so I came up with a way to hold the balancer from spinning using homemade tools.
Same! I'll be leaving it up to the specialists and pay em for their expertise! A smart man knows his limits! Amazing video that truly shows the work necessary
Great job. If you can do it on the street, I should be able to do it in my shop, even though I don't want to. . Thanks for all the info including torque values.
Great job. Don't forget to put the upper studbolts in the ABS unit first before putting it in the bracket. Also, make sure the rubber isolator are in there as well.
holy what a pain in the ass, you made it look easier than most. still looks like hell. did you end up replacing any other pulleys belts or water pump since you were there?
I have to do this on my 03. The one question I have is on the new harmonic balancer. Based on some of the other videos I watched as well as yours, the balancer has a keyway groove in it. The other videos I watched, they stress that you need to fill that groove with silicone because the LS does not have the key on the crank shaft. They say if you don’t fill it, that eventually oil starts leaking out of it. Not sure if you did do that? By the looks of it, it didn’t look filled in and you didn’t mention it so I thought I would ask. Great video. Appreciate the detail and attention to every little thing that needs to be done to get this done!
I did not put any, I would think with the balancer fully seated and 240 ft-lbs of torque on the bolt it wouldn’t leak but idk mines isn’t leaking so far
I’m about to do mine.Mine is a 6 speed manual trans. Can I just put it into gear and chock the rear tires when removing and installing the balancer pulley?
@@stepbro4978 stock belt works you just have to put it on the front 6 ribs of the pulley(towards the front of the car). As far as the steering wheel use a bungee cord if you have one
@@HTPJay thanks a lot for your help.I was concerned about the diameter of the summit pulley.I didn’t know if it was the same or larger.I was wanting to know if I needed a longer belt?
Recently bought a 2006 CTSV LS2 with only 66,000 miles. Balancer was toast, had a local shop install a new one and after 100 miles my engine started overheating coming back on the highway from a state park. Temp needle jumped, warning lights, etc., balancer bolt came loose! They are putting on another Dorman on, how they screwed up IDK. Improper torque? But I can say I know why the LS balancers had a bad rep!
Hey man hopefully you reply... My aftermarket balancer has a bit of wobble and I want to take it to the shop to tighten the bolt and make sure it is up to spec. Will I be able to do this without removing any parts? Is it not as easy as just getting a torque wrench and putting it on and tightening it? I see here that you didn't use the tool for holding the balancer and I see in the comments you are saying something about putting it in 6th gear and you don't need to use the tool, I am not mechanically inclined at all, could you explain this so that my shop can tighten the bolt up to spec please and thank you.
You’re going to have to take off the steering rack and pinion in order to access the bolt for the balancer, it takes a lot of force to tighten the balancer down (240ft lbs of torque), if you have a manual car you can just put it in 6th gear to keep the engine from spinning while tightening the bolt, if you have an automatic car you’re going to need drop your exhaust and get a flywheel holder to stop the motor from spinning while you tighten the bolt
@@HTPJay Ok my car is manual so I am good to just do the 6th gear thing and tighten it (does the car need to be off the ground or no?)... So why would I need to take off the steering rack etc when I can easily get a torque wrench on the balancer bolt without taking ANYTHING off... I don't see why anything needs to come off if the 6th gear thing makes it so you can tighten it without holding it, I can easily just put a torque wrench on it and torque it to spec...
@@HTPJay True, I just looked and yeah it's pretty tight but I would think with a small socket and the right kind of wrench you would be able to get it, you definitely couldn't take it out but you should be able to tighten it. Do you agree?
If you have an automatic yes, with manual no you can just put the car in 6th gear. You can try to use a balancer wrench but I’m not sure that would work
This man gave me confidence in myself to attempt this job, in the street gettin done.
Get to it
I love your confidence and guts during that size job in the street!!!!
for sure, he knows that he will get the job done. I need a garage to do these jobs with confidence.
Best video I have seen on this issue. I am impressed by doing curbside. Great job
Thank you for watching
Good job, I did mine last week. Used the same harmonic balancer, work out great.
Thank you, glad to hear it worked out
great job Explaining thank you for the torque settings Keep them coming

For future reference, does anyone know what kind of puller you would have to use to get the summit pulley out?
I believe you can use a puller/installer like this one www.harborfreight.com/harmonic-balancer-pullerinstaller-set-52-pc-63740.html
Well done. Doing a cam swap and this helped immensely.
Glad it helped
You did an excellent job! Epically doing so in the side of the street. That is definitely some pride in ownership.
Thank you

I always wonder how you know when the new harmonic balancer is all the way on to the crankshaft
Thanks for the video! Good job, I will give it a try.
Hope it works out great 👍

Two thumbs up doing this on the street !
Thank you
Very well done and explained 👍🏻

I had replaced my ac idler pulley right before the balancer

Nice 👍. I have to do this to mine as well. I also have to also do it to my LS swapped Chevelle. That one should be easy as there is nothing in the way
Good luck with both
Great in depth video. How long did this job take start to finish?
2 days because I didn’t have the right tool would’ve taken a day if I did
Good job, and in the street to boot.
Thank you
whats the difference between ati damper and the one you installed. thnx
Attacking this job currently and I’m noticing even in 6th I still have movement
It does move a bit

Nice how’s she running now adays?
Still running strong
Great job what size socket does the arp crank bolt take
I believe it’s a 1-1/16 i think
why didnt you go with ati? and keep grinding on that gt7 lol
I’m not a baller lol, gt7 is as close as I’m getting to owning anything newer than a c5
Can this balancer fail like the stock one?
It probably can but it would probably take a waaaaay longer time for it to happen

The rack and pinion usually gets in the way but if you can do it without removing sounds good, keep the rear tires on the ground so they don’t spin

You’re going to need a big torque wrench that can reach 240ft lbs a smaller one will break
This harmonic has 6 Grove or 8 ? This will fit on stock belt?
8 rib, yes stock belt will fit just put it towards the front
@HTPJay ok thanks very much another question the damper has to ho all the way back? Will alignment with the other pulled?
what if the belts don’t line up as good, what would you do? i had my 00 c5 replaced and my mechanics stated it wasn’t lining up
It’s not seated all the way or you’ve got the wrong balancer
I just need to replace my bolt. I didn't torque it down enough the first time. Did you have to use the flywheel locking tool?

Yes

Better get some gas lol Why is the check engine light on?.
Fuel level sensor is bad and I don’t have rear 02 sensors
disconnect the negative battery cable first
I need this done on my c5 aswell, would you be interested in helping a brother out lol I will pay you?
Has anybody’s summit racing harmonic balancer rusted after about four months like mine did
Why in the world would you takeoff the alternator? Also, if you’ve ever heard of an impact wrench, it’ll take that crank bolt out very fast.
yo bro, would you be down to do my c5 harmonic balancer? $$$
Gm should be ashamed of them self's what a stupid idiot bad call. they should of recalled this and fix their mistakes.
Buy installation tool and dont use it….got it! 📝
