  • The 1960s was a decade of change that hugely impacted the Arab world.
    This first of three episodes follows the politics of the time: The rise of Arab nationalism, the newfound independence of former French colonies, and the defeat of Arab armies in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War.
    The stories of the shifting sands of the 60s are told by many who were there, including former government ministers, broadcasters, activists and writers.
    They recall a decade whose end was profoundly different from the beginning, where loyalties shifted and old certainties were challenged. Later episodes chart the culture and society of this transformative decade.

    15:55 Nasser never spoke about throwing Israel into the sea, nor described his vision in terms of a dream, he spoke about projects and goals. The speaker here is trying to unfairly belittle Nasser and his popularity
    1:19 its very strange of this speaker to describe the so called "traditional monarchies" in the Gulf, Jordan and morocco as "stable"! they all experienced political crises and power struggles, the peaceful transfer of power was a rare event in these monarchies so calling them stable is highly inaccurate to say the least. Also, there was no "penetration" of Arab nationalism. It was homegrown within Arab society and regions, the speaker here is minimizing the spontaneous popularity of Nasser and to sideline the local Arab nationalism movements.
    39:51 very strange take here. The 1967 crisis began as a power struggle for the strait of Tiran and the naval passage from the gulf of Aqaba, one can say that this is a national security battle for Egypt and a continuation of the 1956 war.
    Also, it's nonsense that Nasser died in 67, the speaker here is dimensioning the colossal effort to rebuild the army from the bottom up which was led by Nasser, along with waging a war of attrition. Not to mention two pro-Nasse governments were established after the defeat of 67 in Sudan and Libya.
    45:35 the speaker failed to realize that Europe in the 60s was in a different stage of development than the Arab region. Arab countries were taking the first steps towards nation-building while facing imperialist interventions and the creation of the colonial state of Israel. All of those great values of liberty and education are worthless if you don't eliminate the existential colonial threat posed by those same European countries he speaks highly of.

    There is indeed a lot to understand from that period and to learn from the missed opportunities during that pivotal decade of the modern Arab world history... Aljazeera, as usual, forgot to mention the Islamic political movements which were lurking in the shadows waiting for their moment to shine over the ruins of the defeat of the nationalism, and bring upon the Arab world the second wave of destruction... poor Arabs, from decolonisation until today, we still believe the preacher and wait for a miracle to save us.

    • @lalyosos7720
      @lalyosos7720 Рік тому +1

      By the way there is no nationalism in the arab world since most "arab countries" were not real countries based on cultural/language/ethnicity... and they were created by the one "who doesn't believe the preacher"... You cannot divide the arab people and Islam; so you better work with both of them if you want to have people behind you

    Undoubtedly, Nasser was the almighty of Arab nationalism. The problem was he thought that by arousing ordinary people on the street, victory would be realized, while people on the street followed him in the expectation that he would lead them to victory. Practically, both disappointed the other. War requires charisma and passion can harden fighting spirit, I get that. But ultimately war, or starting PR stirring one, requires strategic planning and cold calculation which is the job of the general staff. He probably broke the record in delivering rousing speeches; he indeed fired up the nationalist sentiment of the Arabs far and wide, still he failed to lead them. People were ready for sacrifice, but sacrifice is sheer suicide without strategy, which is a complex and dispassionate undertaking.

    Didn't the number of Israeli soldiers exceed the combined Arab armies in 1948? Where did Israel get its soldiers (IDF and 'lone' soldiers)? It's equipment? (Rumor has it that Ghislaine Maxwell's father, Robert, was involved in arms transfers). How and why was Nasser tricked into mobilizing (some say by false Soviet intelligence ) in 1967 when most of Egypt's army was tied up in Yemen? I feel as if the story of the 1967 war has never been convincingly told.
