  • This time I restore my trusty old, but very dead and grubby, Casio F-108WHC watch. Not content with a simple restoration I also get my soldering iron out and make a modification to the circuit board for a more stylish and effective performance in the dark. I am a big fan of Casio and am wearing my resilient Casio G-Shock GA-2000 Carbon Core Guard through out this video. The Casio F-108WHC is very similar to the Casio F91W so if yuo own that what this video will be very interesting to you.
I do not do a lot of talking in this video perferring to let the action tell the story.

Many years ago, in a forum, a watchmaker wrote "Death to the quartzs!", and all the other watchmakers in the forum cheered and agreed. (I quit that forum shortly after) Seeing you approach this Casio with love and respect was very refreshing, I really love your attitude to anything that is horology. Thanks a lot for this video.

Such an underrated brand of timepieces. I have several 'top shelf watches but my everyday knockabout watch is a $21 Casio 201. Incredible value for a watch that hits the marks perfectly. Thank you for showcasing these humble timepieces.

Absolutely love this video! We've created a 'throwaway' culture through so much designed obsolescence in items which should last us _at least_ as long as these Casios... mass production hasn't always meant 'cheap & nasty', and a pleasing design with simple uncomplicated function is timeless. It's so refreshing to see someone lovingly restore a quartz watch _and_ make minor changes (ie. the blue LED) so it's functional & desirable today. I'd wager that Casio will outlast any Apple Watch that rolls out of the factory today 👌

Apple Watch is a computer on your wrist, it rubs on software which needs updating. They last a couple of years and that’s it. The Casio will last as long as you take care of it and replace the battery. Just wanted to point out the difference

*_Keep your expensive timepieces. Casios especially G-Shocks, bring me utter contentment in watch brands. The functions are lovely: Wave Ceptor, Tough Solar, Countdown Timer Mode, Stop Watch Mode, Alarm Modes, illumination, Auto EL/LED, World Time Mode, altimeter, barometer, compass, sunrise & sunset data, moon age, hourly tone beeps, GPS, vibration alerts for alarms, timers, and notifications, four digit passcodes for info, and etc. are some them. 😋🤩_*
*_As beautiful and complex as they are, mechanical movements come up apparently short in these features._*

I bought a Seiko ana- digital in 1985 h557 5319 and in 2011 had battery changed , no problems, got caught in rain storm and watch died, moisture inside. That was in 2012. Left it on the shelf till 2022 and replaced battery, didn't reanimate. Took it to watch shop, no dice. Guy shook head about sending it to Seiko. It had sentimental value so I took it all apart for fun, and the hands fell off, and I threw it in the bin. I don't regret it but also wasn't in love with it.
I had a Gshock mudman from about 2010 and I have 6 inch wrists and the housing developed a crack where the pin goes through. Basically, I couldn't repair it.
Now I own two Gshocks, GA2110 and GW5610 U ( updated version) and I really like it. I work at a dying plant and I never had a problem.
I owned a Hamilton quartz a while back 1990s and lost it. I was also thinking about adding a mechanical watch to my collection but I like quartz better and the solar radio Gshock is really cool 😎
I see citizen watch qaurtz going for 2000 and my mouth drops.
If I played lottery( don't play) and won the jackpot I would but the HAQ. Lol 😆 there are so many nice watches
    You are inspirational ❤️ 🙌 . Good job 👏. I subscribed

Kudos for taking the time to show this. It's interesting to see an experienced professional take time to repair something that non-expert people would not consider. Something like a professional driver or airline pilot by day driving an old Volkswagen on his personal time.
If you spent one hour on this repair, the value of your time would be 10 times the value of the watch. But the value of preserving that watch repair on youtube for history is priceless. For every happy rolex owner there must be a thousand happy casio owners, which does say something.
Keep up the good work, and all humans make mistakes from time to time.

Thank you very much for doing such a thorough and excellent job on a simple Casio. I've watched restoration videos here where the watchmaker didn't even clean the crystal or the case. They just restored the movement and nothing else. For me, this is unacceptable unless the owner of the watch wants it that way.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Casios. I had a half dozen of them during the 80’s and 90’s; all of them performed brilliantly for me. And I recently acquired a nice Square G. If you are alone on a dessert island, even the cheapest Casio will serve you better than a Rolex, at least until the battery runs out!

The patience and time you devotes to even this more "humble" watch (I mean if compared to the more priced ones your expert hands have handled and fixed). it's a sign of your great attitude and enjoyment in watchmaking! It's always a pleasure to watch your videos! Thank you so much for sharing! Starting from today, until April 5, we'll be again in "red zone", this means no-one is allowed to go out of his/her home for futile reasons. I really hope that these limitations will soon end, and that we will all return to a "new" normality, possibly different (in better) from this one. Have a nice weekend and stay safe!

Hallo Richard, never would have dreamed you would tinker around with a digital Casio. Now this I can do, and did a lot of myself. Respect for you, that you treat this little Casio with respect too.

    Hi Richard
I’ve recently purchased the same Casio as this one, I can’t wait to do the same mod as you have.
Thank you for the great attention to detail Richard.

Thanks for another great video Richard, I have learnt so much from your videos. Here is a tip for other relative newbs like me. Before putting digital watch cases in the ultrasonic cleaner check that the decal on the glass is not a metallic transfer attached to the back of the glass. I have learnt the hard way that these are easily destroyed by the ultrasonic cleaner.

Brilliant, very nostalgic I remember the first digital watches with red LED's for the numbers. The batteries lasted about a day. But they had such a short production run of about a year they will in future probably be very sought after antiques.

Is it me or did the time on the pocket watch say 12:55?? And not 12:50?? Really great video Richard and totally unexpected. Great to see you rocking the medieval look with the long hair and moustache you’d make a great volunteer over the road at the castle!🚒👍

Hi J******* Haha! It was not you at all ... it was me! I was concentrating too hard on the process, the shooting focus, operating the pushers in finger cots, the audio level and stuffed up the actual time! Enjoying the medieval look, plus in works well when there are no hairdressers open! Hope all good with you and great to hear from you! Richard

You are setting the G-Shock to the vintage pocket watch? That's some serious trust in your work on the latter.

Oh, you are right, it's a square but not a G-Shock. I don't see those very often to be honest.

This must have been an enjoyable change of pace. The quality of your videos is getting better every time, even when the subject isn’t as ‘technical’ as what you do with a Rolex.
Hope you and your family are well and safe, and that Springtime treats you well!

Got to admit.. I'm kinda new to these watchmaker videos but at the same time I find the soo fascinating to watch. I'm a car mechanic and I use tools as well. The size of the tools you use are so darn tiny in comparison. I'm glad to see you do a restoration on one of these old Casios. Had plenty of them through the years and I think they are awesome watches. Even had one that had a temperature display on it. Loved that watch! It's amazing how they could do cool things like that for so cheap. I wouldn't mind trying a restore myself sometime on a digital watch. Analog ones though...well I don't think my hands are steady enough these days to even attempt it.
