    One of the best tiny houses I've seen so far...attractive exterior with decks, better roofline for interior headroom, excellent selection of interior materials, well matched and very thoughtful use of space well-adapted to their lifestyle...an excellent video as always and thought-provoking...

      Kirsten Dirksen It would be interesting to see someone with a cello in a tiny house. They take up a lot of space but they sound nice. I remember a tiny house where the owner has a harp. It's possible, just takes some pre planning.
      I have a viola, just don't know how to play. lol. I bet the sound of her violin would still sound nice in that space.

    Kirsten, I love your video's of Tiny Houses. This one is not an exception! You always manage to show all of the house and all of its features without me going,, I am getting bored or wait I want to see more of xy or z. I also love the way you manage to interview everyone in such a way as to have them feel relaxed and open about how it is to live in a Tiny House. Another excellent video from you. Thank you Kirsten, and thank you to Alek and Anjali for sharing so much with us wannabe tiny housers. :)

      completely agree! There is really no reason why they cant build her a tiny studio/office. There wouldnt have to build a bathroom, kitchen or loft. Just a couple of lines for electricity. and soundproof the walls.

      Logan Aostri a community house is a nice concept, but suppose someone in the community house wanted piece and quiet, and there is a bunch of goofy musicians making a lot of noise? LOL
      A building dedicated to music would be better. Deek makes all kinds of small shacks for those kinds of activies that can be make for a couple of thousand bucks, he puts out youtube vids all the time.
      She is a young woman, and that is a just a tiny house that someone else owns. If she wants one, she will have one someday.

      Logan Aostri I dont know how much a rammed earth building would cost, but they cant be that expensive. IN face there are opensource plans you can download on the internet where you can build an earth brick builder, and course there are always tires you can get from anywhere. Its not like you are thinking about a 20 room mansion. it doesnt have to be a dream if you just want a music room.

    This house (and the one in Brooklyn owned by the two blokes that cook) is probably my favourite. I have lived in small spaces before and I find them much easier to cope with than a large area. I think the overall design is very well thought out and everything has its place. It's missing a wood burner but I don't think that is that important if you have other means of heating the house. I bet it's really cosy in winter.
    Oh and to those that say that the girl is uncomfortable, I'm sure they discussed it over the period that the house was being built. And I'm sure she helped with the build so it's not like the chap said, I'm building it and you live by my rules. Maybe you couldn't live like that but they can. People are too used to being spoonfed everything. Deal with the fact that they got off of their arse and actuilly built their dream home.

    Dependent upon the placement, Alek and Anjali might be able to put a tub in the floor, covered by a floor board door. An extension shower head, with an un-screwable shower head, could pour hot and cold water into the bath. (Just make sure the shower hose extension doesn't drip). The bath could drain outside or be re-captured as grey water. Other tiny house/apartment people have done this. Another option would be to put a standing bath outside in nature and run the shower head extension out to the bath. Privacy can be offered with collapsible standing wall dividers.

    Anjali, don't give up your music. Find a way to hold onto it. Get your violin fixed and continue to play even a tiny bit every day. When I raised my children, I thought I didn't have time for my music. Because of lack of attention, my vocal range shrunk, and my violin skills were lost. After 20ish years, I finally had that spare time, but the ability to express my music was gone. It is worth your while to make the time. Learn from my experience.

    I had an idea how they might be able to make a better working space for each other... Imagine if Alek turned his desk around so it's facing towards the back of the house. Then you put a divider there and Anjali works on the other side facing the divider too Then you could even remove the divider and it turns into a dining table.
    Also, I feel like this is too little space for 2 people. Why not make another even tinier tiny house that one of them could use for an office that attaches to the larger house? It wouldn't need a kitchen or a bath. And if you ever moved you could move them both separately. I think the same could be done for larger families too. Each person has their own tiny house that attaches to the larger house. It's modular housing.

    I still think it is a great idea, because the main purpose was not putting to much money for rent, instead use the money bit by bit to develope this tiny house, i love the fact that it is supporting green future of our earth and save money on water, electricy and rent bills. Yet, are there still need room for improvement?absolutely. We already have the technology to take rain water or sea water and filter it for everyday use, solar panel for our electricity, and composite toilet for our human waste...however, i wish in the future there are people with great minds to enhance this idea so that the void of lackness in these green technology can be use more practically. As we all know that absorbing system of solar panel sometimes too slow, and the battery have to be big and people worry if the batteries need to be replace and how do beginner can use it in their homes or rvs. For rain water filtration, how to made in within rvs and homes and make it more practical. Also for the most disguisting job like composife toilet, how to make it more convenient and less disguisting, can we used more practically in the future..

    I'm all for tiny houses, but as a practical matter I don't like the bathroom being essentially "in" the kitchen. I've lived in small spaces (less than 400 sq ft) since I was 19, and the only one I couldn't stand had a layout with a kitchen/bathroom combo like the one featured here. If you're feeling sick and things get a little noisy or everything is working A OK but there's still the natural smells after all is said and done--- it can really turn the stomach of someone attempting to cook dinner a foot away. Also, privacy is at a premium when living in a small space, and often the bathroom is the only place you get it. I think it's the worse design element ever--hell, even dogs know you don't sh!t where you eat.

      @heartlandranchtv4943 9 років тому +3

      TheDenisedrake I totally agree. One of the best tiny homes I've ever seen. Yes, the criticism for peeing in a jar is stupid. He clearly explained why it was necessary at night, and most men have done it before. it's a perfectly normal thing; hell just think about the old chamber pots that everyone used to keep in their rooms. As far as Anjali, I think you are correct, she seemed somewhat shy and less talkative. Usually, you see the woman overtalking her boyfriend/husband and no one says a damn word about it. But god forbid the man is more dominant and then everyone's screaming... "patriarchy, oppression, abuse". Feminism has truly rotted people's brains.

      You're in charge of how much or little you spend. If you use all reclaimed material, you can build a tiny house for a fraction of what it cost them.

    • @Keystonekweer
      @Keystonekweer 10 років тому +3

      Well yes, that's a big part of it. But there are other factors. First of all, tiny houses on trailers cost more per square foot than a regular size house, but the savings are realized later in heating/cooling costs, energy costs, and the mere fact that you own the house free and clear. Also, no one seems to mention that you don't pay taxes on a tiny house on a trailer. Second, the amount of reused materials affects the cost. And with non-trailer tiny houses such as Innermost house, you can build from the trees and stones on your own property rather than buying lumber.

    The guy in this video is really an a-hole. The more you listen to him the more you see he must think his girlfriend is just lucky to be with and live with him. She barely has any place to sit, and as some commenters said, she seems to always be trying to make herself smaller in the place while he stretches himself all out and doesn't even offer to move so she can move out of the doorway area. Also he really doesn't let her get a word in edgewise. She must really love him. Maybe a follow up video on a year to see how he likes living in the tiny house as a single guy?

      I am having a hard time watching the whole thing, but I agree. The guy won't shut up and his wife/girlfriend doesn't seem to be able to say much before he talks over her. Yeah. Nothing wrong with wanting to go small, but if so, you have to be willing to let go of things. I myself would rather have more space and just get rid of the stuff. :)

      I also din't like that he talked over her but I think since he is a designer it might be that he was just too excited to talk about the house. It's easy to get excited about something if it's your brainchild and designers rarely get to actually build something outside of just making plans for others to build things.
      In most of these videos there is usually one person doing the talking since many couples sort of divide up like that, often just one person deals with improving the building itself, dealing with paperwork etc.
      It would be good if he let her talk about the house but just because he does not might as well mean that he finally gets to talk about it to someone and maybe it's one of those things that he takes care off in the relationship so yeah while it's a character flaw, it not necessarily has to be a permanent one.
      When your other half is a researcher or does other somewhat obscure work it can be a similar situation, once in a blue moon a discussion topic will jump to the researches area of expertise and they might get really excited and just talk over everybody since finally someone mentioned what they spend a lot of time thinking about and other such reasons ;)

    the UN would approve, accept they wouldn't allow you to own property, they would demand rental property and your neighbor would be 13 foot away......I personally think this is horrible and goes in reverse to what America is about, owning a piece of the pie, not a piece of a raisin.

    • @MrElf31
      @MrElf31 10 років тому +4

      But for some of us the pie cost more than we can get, or want to spend on it either. Tiny homes are the best alternative for some of us. We had the 2k square foot house and did not use but one room inside so we sold it off and moved into a 325 sq.ft. RV and are much happier and move when we want to. Heck with my job we have moved 5 times in the last 4 years.advancing ourselves each time. And house buying each time is costly and useless to us. My raisin is a good fit for us and others like us. Just be happy for them and hope they can stick with each other through life.

      That is just plain goofy! Why do you want people to be choked by mortgages or paying for rent? for most of the history of this country, people lived in small houses. Whats the matter, are you afraid your big house is going to lose its value? If so, you should come out and say that instead of this retarded UN/UFO is taking over crap.

      I like big places, I want a big place myself but it's just not a tenable position anymore to consider as normal unless we go from 7 billion people back down to about 2-3 at most, just consider the typical dwelling size for people around the world:
      Europe = traditionally small to medium, getting smaller due to overpopulation,
      Asia = traditionally small, getting smaller in big cities due to overpopulation - note that even the amazing economic growth in places like China cannot stop the demise of overpopulation,
      North America = traditionally medium, holding on to post-modernistic big, getting smaller anyway due to financial issues, that does not exclude eventual overpopulation issues China/UK/Japan style - UK is almost nationally overpopulated at this point, not only an issue for big cities. US has a lot of countryside but no more efficient slavery to build all the infrastructure that supported it in the past.
      Australia = holding on to big too but getting smaller too, maybe bigger chance of staying big longer than US but not in the cities for sure. Maybe a bit more balanced due to location (less immigration, a lot of countryside etc.)
      South America = Traditionally small, growing in some place due to improving infrastructure but financially untenable in the long term due to global issues, bound to follow suit of North America.
      Africa = amazing potential for large dwellings for everyone but traditionally small and forced growth was historically destructive to the land and people.
      People who have space preferred historically to live small and maybe that is what we should take from it that just having space does not mean it is wise to divide it up and build a horizon of Mac Mansions. You can live small by a large forest or live big by a large motorway - to have and eat your cookie is only viable for the richest people on the planet these days.
      In South America, deforestation is causing a lot of harm that in the long run will diminish the living conditions which are only temporarily improved and most likely beneath the pre industrial levels. Some of the shanty towns there cannot be sensibly called living in better conditions than the way people used to live hundreds of years ago in agreement with the rain forrest too.
      In Europe we have many cities where today living is less civilised than it was say right after WW II because it is nothing but cars and large scale food production so your flat is still small but now you can't get delicious small time grown food as easy and sitting in a cafe means listening to traffic if you can manage to get there in the first place - if you are cyclist then good luck - you are braver than I am.
      What America is about, is owning slaves and making moonshine among other no longer tenable ideas.
      If you can manage it, go for it but don't expect for people to just applaud you for doing so - if you think America used to be better then imagine living in the conditions as the people who built all of those roads and railroads - would you want to go back to that?
      It's like time travel - no one ever wants to back in time and be a peasant, people want to go back and be a prince.

      Kirsten Dirksen You shouldn't feel the need to take the blame because on more than one occasion when she did start talking he cut her off and took over.
      Besides the quality of the video and how you shot it were stellar as was his knowledge and detail. He definitely did his homework. It shows that he took all the right steps to make his tiny home flawless.
      I just wish I had gotten to hear more of her input and how the home worked for her. I've heard tiny homes get billed as male bachelor pads by the uninitiated and I've watched enough tiny home videos by women of their tiny homes to know better.
      Tiny homes are as much for women and I just wanted to hear her views instead of his because as I said. I can see a lot of work was put into it and I really enjoyed hearing about the process of it's development and how it fit into their lives.

    Is it only me:.... But there is There is always one thing that always come to mind when I see these small houses built on wheels....Congratulations, you just spent a lot of money to build a really heavy shoddy travel trailer. Why not just buy a used travel trailer? Everything is already thought out, there is no labor in building it and so much cheaper. I'm sure there is a way to reface a travel trailer to make it look like a house.

    Key to tiny house success is to stay in the Goldilocks regions. Not too hot and not too good. These tiny homes have little to no insulation. The laws are also against people wanting to try this.
