    Thanks so much for this, Reuben. Been using Ample stuff for a while but learned so much from watching your process. Particularly liked the “4 step” idea: (1) rhythm in DAW then Ample (2) notes, (3) articulations, and (4) velocity. So efficient compared to just noodling!

      Thanks for the kind words. Apparently in Cubase you can drag whatever you play into Riffer. I wish it worked that way in Logic, though.

    Great video Ruben, thanks! I'd also love to see how to apply Riffer to strums, especially for AGT.

      @hifimidi  6 років тому

      Mary Shaw I prefer using strummer mode for strums, unless I am mixing a riff with one. I will be posting a cover of Samba Pa Ti this week or next and showing how i did it. Thanks for continuing to watch my videos. :)

    Thanks Hifimidi for your great tutorial :) IMO there are a few tips.
    1. After recording a MIDI, you can export it to a MIDI file then drag it into Riffer(Cubase can drag the MIDI track into Riffer directly). You don't have to write all of notes in the Riffer.
    2. If the most of notes are Staccato, it would be faster that select all of notes then change their articulation to Staccato, then set a few notes back to Sustain.
    3. Normally Bassist don't play notes on G and D open strings. play root notes on A and E strings, play bridge and fill on G and D strings.
    4. If you set the latest note to Pull Off, the first note will be legato to a Pull Off, it is not sustain anymore.

      Kang Kane thanks! I will include that in my next video. I had tried saving the midi file in my DAW and importing it into Riffer, but it had an invalid extension.

      Thanks Ruben, the Riffer can read the first track in the MIDI file, so please ensure all of data are in the first track.

    Hey hifimidi great demo, you put in lots of details. The timing was my issue, does the vsti have a groove quantise or shuffle/ swing of some sort . Yes I know you can do that in your DAW but if you're doing all the articulation and volume in the vsti then the groove will affect that stuff and vise versa.

    I purchased the Ampoule Base J, and got a lot of help from How To Program Electric Bass in your DAW series and this video. I'm currently using an M1 Max Macbook Pro and the control button I described as Velocity shortcut in leaf mode is not working. And there is no "stacato" entry in the note articulation. How do I express staccato in the 3rd version of the ampoule base? I want to know how to set it up or shortcut keys.
    Thank you for posting a great tutorial video

    Good day
    I watched one of your software demo -Ample Guitars.
    There is this patch you used in Omnisphere -Evolution Pad.
    I so much love the pad, immediately I opened my Omnisphere to load it up, unfortunately I didn't have it
    So, I wanna ask, how can I get the pad? Or in which of the patches does the EVOLUTION PAD is?
    I'll appreciate your quick response.
    Thanks

    To make Riffer properly useful, it needs to be integrated and sync with the DAW for playback and show the moving playhead as in the DAW piano roll. Then it will be a great tool.

    • @DirtySeaDog63
      @DirtySeaDog63 4 роки тому

      Totally agree. Composing would be a doddle along with the other instruments all in sync. Soon hopefully.

    • @DirtySeaDog63
      @DirtySeaDog63 4 роки тому +1

      Ok, it can be done. Just place an A#8 in a blank midi file in the track lane of the guitar plugin. Move the clip to the start position of where you want to audition the instrument. Press play in the DAW and amplesound guitar starts playing at the trigger point. A#8 triggers Riffer. A8 triggers the tab player. I now have a midi file named Ample Sound Trigger. You will know if you have placed the trigger note in the right place as the guitar will start playing the loaded pattern. You have to press stop to shut it up. It's a bit of a faff, but it does the job just fine. You don't get the playback cursor moving across the note lane, but the triggered notes are highlighted as they are played. Working out where you are isn't that hard to do as you can now employ your ears in relation to the rest of the mix.

    Good job man , but i think you need to use some mutes and other articulations while playing to give the spice of a real bass especially within the second and forth bar

    Is it possible to provide a look at using the guitar Riffer. I know it's much the same but given your genius for explaining these things I would be most grateful. Keep up the great work.

      I am working on that. I programmed Samba Pa Ti, which sounds amazing, but I don't know if I should start with advanced stuff or talk about the basics.

      I would really like to start with the basics as its all new to me but I could understand some of the more able folk wanting you to make it more advanced. I'm just very grateful for all you do already to help us use such a fantastic piece of software. Keep up the great work.

    Do you like the ample sound bass over the trillian bass setup?
    Also, I’m interested in guitar programming because that’s like the hardest thing to play realistically on a keyboard.

    • @igorsenayoutube
      @igorsenayoutube 6 років тому

      I would also love to know how both of Trilian and this compare. Obviously very diferent products with years of difference between one another; This being one instrument and Trilian being many basses in one package but i would like to know if Trilian still is the go to for bass or if it´s best to use something like this only. I have this and the P Bass from Ample Sound but since i am inexperienced with bass i tend to never be happy with what i get unless i do a ton of processing. Having that said. the demos for Trilian sound a bit like "Seinfeld" to me(with a few exceptions). I wonder if it has been update to a more modern sounding library.

    • @hifimidi
      @hifimidi  6 років тому +2

      Trillan is an incredible library. It has many articulations, a huge selection of basses, and lots of customization options. The only reason I don’t use it as much as ABJ or ABP is because you can’t control string slide as much. And ample sound has a really simple programming setup in comparison.

    • @chrisshollinrake6826
      @chrisshollinrake6826 6 років тому

      I agree...Trilian = steep learning curve and slides not as good...still a great bass vsti though.

    Can you go to a fullscreen of the ABJ-GUI if the DAW isn't needed for the video anymore. I'm watching on a laptop and therefore it is difficult to see exactly what you do. I think with a bigger view it is alwalys easier to follow.

    • @hifimidi

      Larry Smith in logic, you can either double click on a midi region you just recorded, or press the letter P on your keyboard. This will open up the piano roll.

    At 14:00, you mentioned that " Can't select multiple notes", To do it you have to press and hold command button and click on the notes you want. Perhaps you already had figured it out by now.

    Want your AmpleSound plugin guitar to allow you to compose whilst playing in sync with the rest of your mix? Ok, it can be done. Just draw a note at A#8 in a blank midi file in the track lane of the guitar plugin. You can load any midi clip, draw the A#8 (at the very start) and delete the rest remembering to name and save the new "Trigger Clip". Move the clip to the start position of where you want to audition the instrument. Press play in the DAW and amplesound guitar starts playing at the trigger point. A#8 triggers Riffer. A8 triggers the tab player. I now have a midi file named Ample Sound Trigger. You will know if you have placed the trigger note in the right place as the guitar will start playing the loaded pattern (if you loaded a pattern). You have to press stop to shut it up.

    • @hifimidi
      @hifimidi  4 роки тому

      Thanks. Never tried that. But the easiest way is to adjust the delay compensation on your track to -32ms. Or setting your plugin to start the sample at 32ms. :) cheers

    • @DirtySeaDog63
      @DirtySeaDog63 4 роки тому +1

      @@hifimidi that's just for syncing the correct playback timing or the guitar strings are at full vibration, ample sound suggest 50ms. What I have suggested allows you to audition your ample sound vst in the location you are composing for whilst monitoring the rest of the mix. That way you can be sure of what you will be getting from the outset. No need to move the newly created rifft into the daw track to audition it in situ and in relation to the entire mix.

    Hello, how are you?
    Did you have any problem of right pitch with this bass. Actually I doubt it because you play short notes, But with my ABU Upright bass, long notes deviate dangerously from their normal pitch. Did you notice anything? Thanks a lot.

    • @hifimidi
      @hifimidi  6 років тому

      I do notice that in some of their plugins. I’m not sure if that’s a bug or the natural pitch shift of an instrument.

      well, for fairness "riff sounds like" Good Times, maybe because Another one bite the dust it is "heavy inspired" from the Chic's masterpiece (or at least they've tried to get inspired, since the Queen bassist is an amateur compared to Bernard Edwards, and you can hear it!).
