  • In this sit down with founder of Lululemon Chip Wilson, Patrick Bet-David discusses his new book Little Black Stretchy Pants and the good and bad stories on the journey to create the yoga-inspired athletic apparel company for women and men.
Order Little Black Stretchy Pants amzn.to/2CShFF4 - This is a book about ordinary people who took an opportunity to be creative, to be innovative, and to maximize their potential.
Chip Wilson’s part in this story comes from the learnings of thousands of mistakes. He set the culture, business model, quality platform, people development program and then got out of the way. Lululemon’s exponential growth, culture, and brand strength has few peers and it is because of those who employees who choose to be great. This book is also about missed opportunity - five years of missed opportunity. Chip was playing to win, while the directors of the company he founded were playing not to lose. Starting Nov 27th, the paperback will be available in bookstores across the country.

Agree 100% what an insightful hour. I had to look it up, Under Armor was founded in 1996, the guy Kevin Plank started creating and selling products in the years prior. Right at the same timeframe as Chip was making his transition from Surf/Skate to Yoga. I think Plank has about $2.5B net worth today.

Just had an epiphany about Valuetainment. Most viewers probably realize that we are witnessing a personal journey. Most of us realize that Patrick is also asking questions for his own benefit, and for our benefit. This particular video is extremely valuable and has sealed the deal for me as to why I have subbed to this channel. It is an evaluation on how the sausage is made. It is inspiring to me at the moment for two reasons. The first is that Patrick would help us all by providing this content. The second is that how the sausage is made has far fewer views than his mob videos. To me this indicates there are many more day job dreamer/consumers than people making the sausage. Us little guys should not get discouraged.

Easily among your top best interviews with a noteworthy industry leader that I've watched, Pat. Thank you for doing what you do to help us all get to know these great minds! I loved his insights into business partnerships/finding a counterpart to balance your traits, always love a good reading recommendations list, and I was inspired by his perspective of what it's like to be a creative visionary leader and how we have to create the time to be our space cadet selves, even as all the technicals are carried out to achieve the goals. I will definitely download his book! Would surely love a signed copy, thank you! -JD Schein.

This is one of those interviews that I save in a private list that I share with my inner circle and I often go back to and review.
Full of golden nuggets and powerful takeaways that can be immediately implemented. That is one aspect I appreciated about this interview.
Oftentimes, I watch interviews where the concepts are either abstract or lead back to 20 different places to do research about, then I need to put the pieces together to come up, hopefully, with the right answer, strategy.
This was on point and easy to digest. Thank you, Pat.

Dude. 24:31 I'm already thinking: Do I really want to IPO? One way or another my baby is not getting lost in the numbers. Also, already added 3 books to my buy list. I love that he referenced Good To Great by Jim Collins (and team). I absoultely agree that a level 5 must train some to become better than them. I've been saying it since before I was even aware of the multi-leveled leadership diagram: my goal with any cook is to train them to eventually be better than me. Though I also said "it's not going to happen because I'll never let you get better than me, but I'll never steer you wrong on purpose and I will teach you everything I know if you're willing to listen." As Chef Damon "Fish" Woods always said "Homes, I'm going to keep talking to you, but here's the thing; all I can do is drop gems, its up to you to pick them up."

I would disagree about creatives being unhappy. I know many creatives that are happy that does not come from being completely happy about their creations. The result are not what gives them happiness rather its the energy of going through the process and efforts of creating something. So the act of creating gives more happiness rather then the results of the creation itself. Once something is created you move it out of your mind and move on to working on the next creation or project.
Great interview and lot of great insights to be learned from it!

I miss the surf skate clothing as I am a big guy myself 6 foot 2 and grew up in the 90s wearing high quality skate and surf branded clothes. I ordered some new tshirts from a surf shop a few months ago and they all came thin fit and I had to send them back. I can't find any thick jumpers any longer and most of the clothes are low quality for men now. I went to Singapore and visited the billlabong shop and found some men size tshirt, i bought 20 of them.

Interesting dialogue about creatives vs. metrics (performance) based people. Agree about the tension between the two. A couple strategies we employ to "meet in the middle" is 1) thorough consumer & market research on the creatives' ideas to vet and validate them and 2) test before fully rolling out. To add --- the consumer should really drive the ideas that the creatives then use to innovate which, in turn, should drive positive results....because you gave the customer what they asked for! :)

Patrick this was a good interview, I see his perspective. You can conquer someone by stepping on their head or you can be inclusive and bring someone and you up a level.
