This is interesting. Lived through this time. Understood talking to transgender/gender non conforming people in this manner was cruel and disturbing. Though looking back? There was no social media world for people to hear the stories of transgender/gender con conforming people. So you’d only have the talk show circuit as the only window to the outside world to the community for these people. Now am happy that things have changed. One thing that younger generations than myself need to realize is that…in order to get to the knowledge we have today is to have gone through times like this in the past. We’re always reinventing ourselves. People like these transsexual sex workers were invisible in decades before this. Now it’s great we can have what’s now called positive representation. But at this time, seeing it on TV in any way was at least visibility. But again, glad we’ve evolved from such presentations of trans people.

I knew Mona when he was Pedro. He went to my elementary school and I ran into him a few times through the years up to high school. It's true he always wore women's clothing. At the time of this show's airing I was in high school, I think Pedro had dropped out or otherwise no longer attending school. It was tough watching my classmates reactions the day after this aired but bear in mind, these were immature high schoolers in 1991. And of course we all wondered which gym teacher he slept with!
What I don't understand is why Phil is not taking about HIV. I am sad for any prostitute's. Maybe they could not get a regular job. But my God the disease, the violence they themselves are at risk.
You need to watch more of his shows. Phil was (is) very liberal and progressive. No one in the 80s was interested in and discussing LGBTQ issues. That's where Phil came in. Groundbreaking.
“But you don’t look like a woman you look like a beast” yassss MISS SILVER 👏 this audience should be ashamed of themselves. I understand the times were different but this is so inhumane. I feel the hate radiating off the screen. It’s truly sad and these girls are only opening up and telling you about themselves. Shame on the audience and anyone that agrees with them! It's called pro bono. I don't get what the one guys issue was with it. A lot of attorneys take a number of pro bono cases. Usually for people that can't afford an attorney for themselves.
The commercials are heartbreaking. What the hell happened to our world? I was in my 20’s in 1991. I could never have imagined in my worst nightmares what the US has become today.
The extreme control of words means you cannot get the depths of real discussion. You just skirt around it. It treats people like unintelligent infants.
I feel so bad for Silver. He was asking her so many personal and potentially tirggering questions. He's asking about truly traumatic shit, and she clearly looks uncomfortable, I feel so bad for her.

The content of This is so gross, and it has Nothing to do with Trans people or sex work… As an aside, DB was a VERY “close” friend of my Uncle in the 80’s…my very closeted and very gay uncle…close enough DB would call my MOM for advice… Knowing what I know, I am comfortable in saying that I am VERY CONFIDENT THAT HE KNEW THIS PERSON WAS ASSIGNED MALE AT BIRTH AND POSSESSED MALE GENITALIA DESPITE PRESENTING AS FEMALE… Mainly because I’m confident that he wouldn’t have been interested if this person was NOT in possession of male genitalia…
56:24 “I just wanted to say that I respect all of your rights to do with your life whatever you like, but it’s really a sad comment on our society when you have to risk your life in order to make your living.” Her words really touched me. She’s probably a cool grandma by now.
So, silver was studying psychology and feels what the woman in the audience said about the cycle of SA was a myth.ugh. It’s not a myth. Just because it didn’t contribute to your life decisions doesn’t mean it won’t for others.
It’s true that SA can affect someone’s feelings about sex, in all sorts of complex ways. It’s a myth that queer people were all SA’d or come from dysfunctional families. Psychology students typically learn about the bio-social-psych model. We humans are a complex lot. Genes, prenatal environment, culture, child- and adult-hood experiences, all interact in ways we don’t fully understand. Psychology is officially a couple hundred years old, but we still have lots to learn.
It's sad that we live in a world where we have to figure out what a woman is as well as a man . We tamper too much with what God created. Such is the time we live in.
I now remember seeing this when it first aired. From what I see on the UA-cam currently, there's apparently a clientele that wants these specific services. I cannot imagine growing up in West Virginia being a transvestite. I'll guess that Silver was fortunate to have left WV. For some reason, I'm getting the impression that Silver might be Jewish. I was a little surprised by the booing from the audience. I thought Silver was being authentic.
Silver should be on the stage! This is two different shows! I loved this show and I looked up Jenny Jones, they are performers it’s a totally different energy
The audience loves, Silver! I think I do to. She has not had an easy life. Doing what she has to do to make a living. Good for her that she is going to school. I hope she lands a good career. I think she would make a good actor. She would be great in a crime drama. She could be unintentional comic relief. On a side note...She kinda looks like Chandler's girlfriend Janice from " Friends " lol !
You can tell this show is of it’s time. A lot of what Phil said, would not be tolerated this day and time. Like saying, “if a guy in a dress gets in a car with an unsuspecting man, gets what he deserves.” WOW……how sad
You clearly don't understand that Donahue's job is to reflect the thoughts of the audience no matter how prejudicial; not his personal views. Phil is extremely liberal personally but wants to tease out all views so that discussion can ensue for educational purposes. We are in a much more conservative time today than in the 1980's. Nothing is tolerated today -- only politically correct orthodoxy is tolerated - which is not a good thing leading to the incredible division we now experience.
To be fair, he was saying it from the point of view of the jury, not his own viewpoint, nor was he implying he was agreeing with it. It's just that's the reality of the time, sadly.
I was born in 91' so I was obviously too young to see this but I remember hearing terms like "transvestite" and how normal offensive terms like this were used in the late 90s and even early 00s. For all the negative things social media has brought to the world, it has helped educate people on topics like this.
I was born in 79. Transgender wasn’t a term back then. Transvestite at that time was not considered a slur as it was just what they were designated as. The offensive word back then was quite simply “Tranny”.
Silver carried all the whole show with a lot of wit and character and facts about transexuality and all the audience was doing was being rude very to her which is similar to how they treat and berate all the other guests and minorities they have, so glad times have changed and I live in a bit of a more tolerant and accepted world, I would like to know what silver is up to these days.

@@michellec3558 She stopped breathing
R.I.P., right audio channel.
Not so much "anti-trans violence" as "dishonest advertising".
The amount of ads is crazy
I just finished watching the Jenny show and I wonder whatever happened to Silver I know Exotica has apparently passed due to AIDS related complications
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Is this silver from jenny jones show
Laughing at the commercials, remembering them as a kid how "WOW" they were. And now looking at them and it's like who tf bought this sh!t.
Did you see the adverts ??especially for Toyota cars 😂
My first car was a used Toyota from that era! 🤎 🚗 Watching all those old ads was WILD!!!
Wonder whatever happened to Silver
Silver seems lovely and shame on anyone who booed her. She was harming no one or did nothing wrong.
You smell
He’s disgusting.
He/she was loud, obnoxious, and rude.
What messed up reality do you live in?
@@bobroberts2316How was she rude for expressing her opinion?

What I don't understand is why Phil is not taking about HIV. I am sad for any prostitute's. Maybe they could not get a regular job. But my God the disease, the violence they themselves are at risk.
You need to watch more of his shows. Phil was (is) very liberal and progressive. No one in the 80s was interested in and discussing LGBTQ issues. That's where Phil came in. Groundbreaking.
Phil absolutely talked about HIV back in the 80s.
@II-wx4kv He's not gay.
@II-wx4kv Same reason I'm not a woman but I care about women's rights. It's called being a human.
They do bring it up
These people were also on Jenny Jones’s show! I’d love to know how they’re doing now!
The Hawaiian/Asian looking one died of AIDs. Not sure of the others...
Where is Silver at nowadays?
“But you don’t look like a woman you look like a beast” yassss MISS SILVER 👏 this audience should be ashamed of themselves. I understand the times were different but this is so inhumane. I feel the hate radiating off the screen. It’s truly sad and these girls are only opening up and telling you about themselves. Shame on the audience and anyone that agrees with them! (Except for the last 3, they were nice lol)
MONA IS GROSS. KEEPS PUTTING HER TONGUE OUT;
What’s inhumane is prostitution.
@@MsJonessss get a life.
how about putting Danny in prison
Danny has always been a mess. He's still irritating.
It's called pro bono. I don't get what the one guys issue was with it. A lot of attorneys take a number of pro bono cases. Usually for people that can't afford an attorney for themselves.
Where's Silver today?
Stephanie Jade that's what im trying to know. Some people were saying that most of them passed but can't seem to back that claim.
a younger Jerry Springer who was a huge fan of Donahue saw this and thought OMG I can exploit these people and make millions. 😆
@16:30 “Well, when I first heard about the story, I waa.. Danny Bonaduce, who the hell is that? Somebody from Brooklyn?”
😂😂😂😂
That killed me.
At least they didn't think they were women back then. Just men in dresses.
Old Phil!!! Off the chain!!!
The commercials are heartbreaking. What the hell happened to our world? I was in my 20’s in 1991. I could never have imagined in my worst nightmares what the US has become today.
I'm not offended by any of the language. We live in such a soft, crybaby world today.
The extreme control of words means you cannot get the depths of real discussion. You just skirt around it. It treats people like unintelligent infants.
You're offended when others are offended? Ok. Lol
How does a person from West Virginia have a New York accent 😂
They came to NYC when they were 13… and adopted a New York lifestyle. Pretty simple math
Came there as a kid probably

Silver was quite the storyteller.
silver is cute , seems like a good person
She's witty and cute. I hope she's well and found happiness and what she sought.
She's alive?
I feel so bad for Silver. He was asking her so many personal and potentially tirggering questions. He's asking about truly traumatic shit, and she clearly looks uncomfortable, I feel so bad for her.
You mean he silver is a man. These people... Probably fart in there own mouth

"You don't look like a woman! You look like a bee!" -- DEAD.
A woman is an adult human female ...
A woman is anyone who identifies as a woman.
@@brianborchardt7198 you can't use the word you're defining in your definition. you might use similar words but never the actual word youre defining because then it's not a definition. you also can't identify into something that cannot be defined

@@erikbunty2016you tell me. It's culturally and socially defined with much variance throughout the world.
Exact airdate, please?
love the commercials!
From the audience, the lady in the overalls, the man in the light pink shirt, and the lady in the black shirt and baseball cap at the very end were making good points.
The content of This is so gross, and it has Nothing to do with Trans people or sex work…
As an aside, DB was a VERY “close” friend of my Uncle in the 80’s…my very closeted and very gay uncle…close enough DB would call my MOM for advice…
Knowing what I know, I am comfortable in saying that I am VERY CONFIDENT THAT HE KNEW THIS PERSON WAS ASSIGNED MALE AT BIRTH AND POSSESSED MALE GENITALIA DESPITE PRESENTING AS FEMALE…
Mainly because I’m confident that he wouldn’t have been interested if this person was NOT in possession of male genitalia…
Silver's personality, mannerisms, voice and hand gestures is giving much Joy Bahar from "The View".
You’re blind and deaf, clearly.
Who set the bar down?
I'm sorry but that toyota song 😂😂 made me giggle

56:24 “I just wanted to say that I respect all of your rights to do with your life whatever you like, but it’s really a sad comment on our society when you have to risk your life in order to make your living.” Her words really touched me. She’s probably a cool grandma by now.
How can you look at that face (Silver) and not see that that is not a man?
who cares
I don't believe Danny would be reduced to soliciting ANYTHING from this person.
The youth these days will never know ☕️👀
Volume is horrible
21:38 Donahue theme song
It's sad that we live in a world where we have to figure out what a woman is as well as a man . We tamper too much with what God created. Such is the time we live in.
everything was better in the 90's! even the ads!
At least there were a few standards remaining in society
Dr Ruth and Gilbert Godfrey was an unexpected highlight.
Look at that trend setter with that winged eye 👁
I now remember seeing this when it first aired. From what I see on the UA-cam currently, there's apparently a clientele that wants these specific services. I cannot imagine growing up in West Virginia being a transvestite. I'll guess that Silver was fortunate to have left WV. For some reason, I'm getting the impression that Silver might be Jewish. I was a little surprised by the booing from the audience. I thought Silver was being authentic.
Idk if there’s too many Jewish families in west Virginia. He puts on a stereotypical “Jewish woman” affect, but that’s it.
Silver looks SO much like my (female) college roommate, 1988. She was a self-proclaimed "JAP." I think Silver is her actual surname.
Good video
This is addictive viewing
Silver should be on the stage! This is two different shows! I loved this show and I looked up Jenny Jones, they are performers it’s a totally different energy
He’s probably dead by now.
Sound sucks :(
The Toyota camry commercial fucked me up, I mean im only 32 not that old but damn thats an old ass car
Right on girly ❤
DMB, well your really pretty for being as vintage as me in age
DMB, idk why but that seemed hot.
I'll sit & stare at a classic all day, even wiper down time from time
DMB, ill even spit on it before applying pressure 😉😉😉. People were really kinky back in the good ol classic days. Call me Jessie James
I know I love Silver. She is fascinating and very likable. Very smart. I hope all her dreams have come true.
He’s hideous.
He looks like Adam Sandler
Whether we want to admit it or not. This society still has a problem with the gay and trans community😡
Deal with it or STFU, whiny ass
Make this viral
I like this Silver fella... He has common sense even if he lives in his interesting world...
The ignorance in these comments show how the same ignorance in this video hasn’t changed a bit
Only a bit, unfortunately.
Silver was awesome! Hopefully she's still around. ❤
Sadly, Phil was fired from MSNBC because of his anti-war sentiments during President Bush’s “War on Terrorism”.

Silver unfortunately went in the public bathroom for smelling bad and got beat up pretty bad.. yep!! Thats what happens when your a weirdo!
He’s not a transsexual. He’s a tranvestitie prostitute. These are GAY MEN. stop calling them women.
