Phil Donahue, Anti-Trans* Violence, 1991

  • "We are a very immature nation." A challenging Commercial Break from VINTAGECOMMERCIAL. Highly lurid, transphobic, and antagonistic Phil Donahue interview of transgendered, transsexual, transvestite, and otherwise trans* guests on his talk show, all of whom work in the sex industry. One guest of color recounts a violent beating received by a famous person. Another guest recounts experiencing other acts of violence. There's a variety of attitudes and opinions expressed regarding violence against sex workers, the responsibilities of sex workers, and the role of homophobia/transphobia in disclosure. There is also a lack of appropriate gender, sex, and sexual orientation discussion. As Phil Donahue himself said, finally, at the very end, this is an exchange filled with insecurity, fear, and ignorance.
A lot of the language used is offensive.

I agree.. He was an advocate for trans persons before the word transgender was even a word. And this case is about Danny assaulting and battering another human being. It does not, and should not matter what gender the other person is. All persons should have equal protection living in a civil society with laws. We already know Danny was a drug addict and was known to assault and batter persons. And he probably had targeted this trans person specifically, knowing that (or thought) he could get away with assaulting and battering them and thinking he could get away with it because society had been treating them as second-class citizens. Thankfully, society has evolved and trans persons are getting more and more of the rights that all persons enjoy in our society.

no it was not.. they used transexual transvestite and cross-dresser (at best) back then. And those words have negative connotations and/or do not correctly describe the transgender experience and identity. The word Transgender started to become used around the mid 1990s.. first in places like San Francisco. And it slowly spread.. It was not untill after around 2010 that many "Gay and Lesbian" organizations started to add the word Transgender to their names. And the expression LGBT,, and the T in particular did not get spoken untill the late 1990s and early 2000s.

@@manp1039 Christine Jorgensen started using the term "transgender" rather than "transexual" in the mid nineteen-sixties because she felt the word "sexual" limited the scope of gender identity. She said this in a recorded interview which is available on UA-cam.

This is interesting. Lived through this time. Understood talking to transgender/gender non conforming people in this manner was cruel and disturbing. Though looking back? There was no social media world for people to hear the stories of transgender/gender con conforming people. So you’d only have the talk show circuit as the only window to the outside world to the community for these people. Now am happy that things have changed. One thing that younger generations than myself need to realize is that…in order to get to the knowledge we have today is to have gone through times like this in the past. We’re always reinventing ourselves. People like these transsexual sex workers were invisible in decades before this. Now it’s great we can have what’s now called positive representation. But at this time, seeing it on TV in any way was at least visibility. But again, glad we’ve evolved from such presentations of trans people.

I am 🏳️‍⚧️ and remember the time before the internet. I was 4 when this aired. I'm grateful for the internet because I probably would've unalived myself without the community. I'm pretty sure shows like this and Jerry Springer kept me closeted longer. I remember seeing the hate on TV as a child and trying to suppress everything. Trans (and honestly all queer people) were the modern day sideshow on the talk shows for far too long. It's the only time I'd ever see people like me on TV. It was traumatic in the 1980s and 90s.

Bonaduce was there to host an event for D.A.R.E., an anti-drug campaign aimed at children.[29] Bonaduce was eventually fired from WEGX.[30] He later became the morning shift DJ at KKFR-FM in Phoenix, Arizona.
On March 31, 1991, Bonaduce was arrested in Phoenix for beating and robbing Darius Barney, a transvestite prostitute; "authorities said the victim suffered a broken nose and a cut to his face."[31] Soon after, he was fired from KKFR. In July of the same year, Bonaduce pleaded guilty to reduced charges. Amongst his punishments, he was required to pay Barney's medical bills.[32] Later that same year, Bonaduce returned to WEGX in Philadelphia

What sickens me hete is how tjey ALL seem to be missing the most important point. Whether someone is He,She, They, whethervtheyre a crossdresser, Transvestite, Transsexual woman , CIS man or woman , NOBODY deserves to be beaten like this. Silvet says " Thsts the risk you taje as part of the job". Yes, it is. Butbit doesnt make it rigjt. Statemrnts like that and that kindbof attitudevis exactly what lets predators feel tjey have a right to beat call girls and likewise leads to the cops being apathetic towRds victims of serious assaults.
Some may say that a man or woman cheating on a partner is a heinous crime. So then, should we just allow a man to beat his wife to a pulp cos she cheated? No freaking way!
Even if this celebrity did genuinely mistake the TV for a CIS woman. He still had no right in beating them like he did . The lawyer was thebonly one here who seems to have any concept of this.
Im.a Transsexual woman who is also a prostitute and even 33 years on from when this show was shot, i still worry about being attacked. Trans women ae being murdered all the time and when it comes to call girls, thetes lots of women i know, both trans and CIS women who have suffeted unspeakable things during atttacks.
If your well to do daughter was walking home and got badly beaten, youd be screaming for justice. Yet, if its a trans woman or an escort, then all of a sudden "they wrre asking for it" or they "brought it on tjemselves"
    No! Its not on!
Nobody should be assaultd likevthis andbit disgusts me thst so msny peole even think this is up for debate let alone those who think its justified.
Its all too easy for thosecwho ae privelleged enough to have choices to siyvthete looking down on sex workers. But many people are prostitutes because they have no other options and lets not forget the supply on demand. Peoplecarevall too quick to judge call girls yet theyre quick rnough to use us for their own sexual satisfaction..
NOBODY SHOULD LIVEVIN FEAR OF BEING BEATEN like this and just because it happensva lot to call girls, it doesnt justify it like Silver here seems to be implying.
Anyway, Transvestite men like him just do it as an exploitation of that demand. They can easily just get changed and go get a job elsewhere. Notvso easy for TRANSSEXUAL women like us who DONT haveva choice of who we are. Weree born this way, and for manybofbus, prostitution is thebonlynoption we have to survive. Ive been attacked, had death threats, houndedvin my home. Many of us are even murdered. But we dont have the option of just giving the job up.
SEX WORKETS ARE HUMANS &WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAFETY, Just like everyone else. It just disgusts mr thst people even hsvevto debate this fact

You clearly don't understand that Donahue's job is to reflect the thoughts of the audience no matter how prejudicial; not his personal views. Phil is extremely liberal personally but wants to tease out all views so that discussion can ensue for educational purposes. We are in a much more conservative time today than in the 1980's. Nothing is tolerated today -- only politically correct orthodoxy is tolerated - which is not a good thing leading to the incredible division we now experience.
