We have a good adult skating community in Phoenix, Arizona despite being spread out among 5-6 rinks. I would say it is very supportive. We do compete, but support and encourage each other. The hardest part is getting the rinks to give us many adult only sessions at times that are good for adults that work and in the summer months. They don’t always take us seriously, but some progress has been made. Thank you for supporting adult skaters! Great suggestions!!!
I live in Phoenix and just started skating. I’m looking to start taking learn to skate classes too, happy to hear there is a good adult skating community 🤗
I tend to be everybody's cheerleader. I'm under no illusions that I'm the second coming of Scott Hamilton or Nathan Chen. Skating is fun and while I might compete (hope to, if I can ever prepare to pass the pre-Bronze MitF and Free Skate), even that is for fun rather than anything else. What it comes down to is I love skating and want other people to love it. And if being able to help others, or just cheer on their progress, can help other people love it, that's what I want to do.
I am super fortunate to be part of an adult-only skating club in my city. We are an encouraging, supportive group for each other, but also for all the adult skaters we meet at other arenas, competitions, etc. it’s such a great community and I’m so thankful for it!
Enjoyed your video and loved seeing that toughie Calla leading the group! We go back a looong way. Coffee Clubs are a great way for adult skaters to connect. My old rink had 2 sessions each week and the group was very supporting. And if a newbie came in we all helped them get going. Fun times that I miss very much.
What a coincidence! My fellow coach/skating partner/private coach and I were just talking about implementing programs and events specifically for adults at Owens Center, our rink in Peoria, Illinois. You offered some excellent suggestions that we are likely to incorporate. May I add one of my own? Most of the social ice dance weekends held around the country (Minneapolis, Atlanta, San Francisco) are mainly, but not exclusively, attended by adults. There's a weekend in Toronto, Canada, too. Every ice dancer, regardless of skill level, is welcome. Even if you're not an ice dancer and concentrate on solo skating or synchro or pairs, your private coach could help you with the first few patterns. They're easy to learn! Great ideas! Thanks!
I rediscovered skating in my 50's because my local Community Center rink has free ice time for "seniors" twice a week. There were a couple of very inspirational older skaters who encouraged me, and connected me with other adult skaters in the area. I also took lessons with the kids, but made a point of encouraging the parents to strap on some skates and join the fun.
YAY! I'm so glad you guys made a video about this! My wife and I had been so sad about the lack of adult skating community at the rink where we take regular lessons - it's just like you describe, there are some adults, but no one's interested in talking to each other, they just do their own thing mostly. But when a new-ish seasonal rink opened up in our city, we immediately met a bunch of other adults! And now we see each other at every public skate, give each other tips and encouragement, and it's completely amazing. Love your tips, and it's nice to know that you had a similar experience before just making it happen! ❤️❤️❤️
Wow, that’s awesome you guys managed to find skate buddies and have your group now! We feel it makes skating way more enjoyable and gives us things to be excited about other than a landed jump or a successful 3-turn. It’s harder to make friends when you are an adult… but it’s so rewarding!
Struggling to make figure skating fiends :D ? That might describe some of the more competitive types. Have you been playing 'Best Fiends'? Most of the adults at my rink are either former hockey players, or parents with small children. Occasionally someone will show that they have figure skated in the past. We have no figure skating club here at present. Any suggestions?

Goth on ice? Me too! We seem a similar level too… 🖤

That’s awesome! And free ice time is a dream… 🤩
Great to meet you both and the adult skaters at the rink. Next time, I might bring my skates!
Loving all the updates and adventures you go on.
Great video! I have recently started to build some friendships with other adult skaters, it is lovely and we skate together all the time now!
Way more fun that way, isn’t it?

Yes! Watch this video - it’s literally a whole list of suggestions on how to grow an adult skating community.
