At least Great Eastern’s history is kind of interesting, even if her career was a financial disaster and her exterior aesthetic was sorely lacking. At 18,915 GRT, she was unsurpassed in gross tonnage for 43 years, until the 20,904 GRT RMS Celtic of 1901.
@@IlovetheOceanicIf she had been built maybe 30 or 40 years later, had an actual superstructure, been powered by steam exclusively and only 2 or 3 funnels, maybe she would have fared a lot better commercially. With an actual superstructure, she probably would have surpassed the Big Four in gross tonnage, and held on to the title of largest ship in the world until the Lusitania and Mauretania entered service in 1907.
Remember ships, if you ever have a bad day at sea, just remember that roughly 200 years ago, some unlucky b***ard got stuck on their first attempted launch and was so chaotic to run that they were a better billboard than they were a ship. 😊
Ah yes, if Titanic was the “ship of dreams” the Awful Eastern must be the “ship of clowns” On an unrelated note, Brunel looks exactly like Alec Baldwin.
