  • This vlog features Patrick and Stuart sharing some of the DIY projects that they are working on in preparation for a future French chateau. Stuart experiments with a new powder product for casting plaster as well as making a custom (bespoke) silicone mold. Patrick works on repairing an antique tilt-top table that had been damaged due to wood worm.
Casting product tested is Ultracal 30
Mold (mould) making product tested is Pixiss Mold Putty
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

You know when you find a great show and you tuck into bed and get to watch an episode or two. That's the feeling I'm getting from your channel. I'm delightfully binge watching from episode 1. I'm really enjoying this episode as I am totally into restoration projects 😍 . Best part is knowing that this show isn't going to end anytime soon! The writers won't run out of good ideas and projects to do. You guys are fabulous 😊❣️

Hi there Hannah. I loved traveling to Normandy with my parents many, many years ago and was always amazed by the amount of châteaux there. What is so funny is that most of the chateau vlogs are in Normandy. 🥰. Glad you like the vlog and thank you for your wonderful comment. ⚜️🌹⚜️

Fabulous as always. ❤️ I can’t believe it’s already been 16 episodes. I find myself really looking forward to your new vlogs each week. You’re getting really good at this. So, we’ll done to you, fellas. When baking, I know we measure dry ingredients by weight and liquid ingredients by volume. Ounces versus Fluid Ounces. I couldn’t help but wonder if that might have had something to do with your plaster mixture being so thin. Just a thought. Can’t wait to see what you do with this new skill. I am inspired and I’ve already started thinking about what I can detail around my house.

Jumpin' Jehosaphat...Stuart has the patience of Job. I remember, back in the day, restoring one of the Painted Ladies in SF, and the long entrance corridor had a line of putti along the frieze with a few broken/missing parts and I naively made up the missing bits with Spackle. Ha! And Patrick, furniture restorer par excellence. Great work, both of you.

I’d have winged it just lie you and there is nothing wrong with that. 😘. Stuart has that patience that borders on sainthood. I’m glad you like my little restoration segment. @@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 Oh, the gaps: longer and older than the Darien itself. We bought the Victorian during the Last Ice Age before everything heated up, including real estate. But the Spackle had barely dried on the restored putti when my Italian chef/boyfriend decided the grappa tasted sweeter down the street. Never realized the full restoration of that beautiful house but in a few weeks time I found myself seated at Speckmann's enjoying Kassler Ripchen with my new German boyfriend. Life always continues.
We as vlogees/vlogettes ? What's the right term, I don't know. Such a good idea to learn new skills for repairing your future chateau. Patrick, you did an excellent job of making a new mold and then creating a mock up of what could be done with it. Brilliant! Might as well design a whole room in advance with wallpaper and curtains too! Stuart you should try your hand at making trim and paneling. You now can do things in a jiffy and hopefully take with you a few boxes of those products you will need to accomplish this. This kind of forward thinking will save you two so much time. I see from other video vlogs that resourcing materials for renovations is not only hard, but very expensive. Good luck to you both. Can't wait to see what you have in store next.

Thank you so much darling Maria. There are moments when I find fabrics and wall paper online, looking into what would work with upholstery….. and down the rabbit hole I go. We will definitely take some supplies with us and also get some from Germany ( I have to ask my dad and he loves to shop in home improvement stores). He’ll bring them when they come visit with their RV. It is becoming very expensive to renovate due to all those shortages. Sometimes I wonder why! I’m glad we have the abilities to do much of the work ourselves. Labor is usually the biggest chunk.

Congratulations Stuart and welcome to the wonderful world of plaster crafting. As both a ceramic artist and decorative arts restorer, here are a couple of thoughts and tips about working with it. Firstly, atmospheric moisture may influence the amount of water a given amount will absorb, so it's prudent to do a test batch with each new purchase. It also has very little lateral strength which can be improved in two ways. You may mix in nylon fibers, available from a ceramic supply company, which will not be visible when the plaster cures. Alternatively, you may pour your plaster and then cover with an overlay of nylon mesh, such as common window screen and gently work it superficially into the surface of your pour. When you unmold your piece, you may cut the mesh with an exacto knife along the edges. A proper sealing of your work will include a coating of gesso. While there are modern products available, I suggest that you look into the traditional preparations available from a specialist art materials dealer.

The moulding designs are so smart. the uses are endless. Sometimes climatic conditions can interfere with the texture, how dry or wet the air is etc. It was a trial and it was easily fixed. A good idea to prepare as much as possible presently, so when you move there will be enough organising and planning to do. You do not wish to get overwhelmed with unnecessary small things. So looking forward to your move to France. cannot wait. Wishing .you are the very best with the moving, may there be no damages and nothing going missing. @@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 Dear Patrick, thank you for your very kind comment I really do appreciate that. First and foremost do try to calm down regarding the care of the dogs, if you have a reputable company that will take care of them you are half way there. Unfortunately they can's sit with us on the aircraft, the others won't like that! Moving can become very traumatic, we are too concerned about our earthly blessings. I just pray! I give all in prayer to God, I know He loves and cares for us, and He will take care. You will make yourself sick with concern, just try to rest in the thought that they will be fine. I would not go on holiday because the dogs would miss us too much and vice versa. We had them for 14 years, they were not pedigree but so much character. When they passed, we vowed no more animals, we were literally broken humans. We are our own worst enemies! You are moving to a wonderful country, steeped in History and sophisticated French people, what more can you want and a cracker of a Chateau. Hope my encouragement has helped. Patrick Journey to the Chateau Hey Patrick! I certainly will let you know. My place is not so fancy that it can take anything but a simplified version, but I’ve wanted to do an Adam style ceiling in the front room and dining room for some time. I’ve collected Wedgwood jasper ware plaques as well as the Royal Copenhagen Four Seasons plaques for the purpose, but doubt I’ll be able to match as many as I’d need. Molding what I have would help this, and I’d also like to create some other elements. We’ll see how it goes!

Just to help, I would strongly recommend in finding the natural processes which were used at the time (and actualy still today) For example they used fish or bone glue, which is very strong and if you made a mistake will come off easily with some hot water. The same for if you want to restore a château, in my opinion it is better to restore with period materials, the look is also better. (for example in varnish, if you varnish with modern varnishes it looks so plastic like, instead with French gomme lacque it looks beautiful. It would be also interesting to discover these on the channel !

Hello Wim. We couldn’t agree with you more. We usually try to use materials of the period. In this case, we had to get things done for storage but of course you are absolutely right. As far as surfaces, unless they are completely bad, we would rather just use wax to smooth them out and not touch the varnish. But modern finishes are as you say too plasticky. We will post questions, once we have a chateau and hope you’ll be there with your suggestions. Hugs 😘
