Neom: Saudi Arabia's $500 Billion Bet To Build A Futuristic City In The Desert

  • Saudi Arabia is building a futuristic city in the middle of a vast desert- from scratch.
    A vital element of the country's Vision 2030 plan, the project is the brainchild of Saudi's de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS. The site covers an area of more than 10,000 square miles, about the same size as Massachusetts. And it could cost $500 billion to complete.
    "So Mohammed bin Salman wants to project himself as a liberal leader within the conservative royal family in Saudi Arabia," Ali Dogan, research fellow at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient institute, told CNBC in an interview. "Neom is a mega project seen in Saudi Arabia and the young Saudi population as part of this liberalization process."
    The Neom project is far from without controversy, though. Critics say it's another attempt by the crown prince to improve his image after U.S. intelligence officials concluded he was behind the 2018 killing of journalist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi. It also is being seen by some as a way to distract attention from Saudi Arabia's human rights record.
    Watch the video above to find out why MBS is betting on this futuristic city.

    They could've spent that money on countrywide public transportation systems and an improved city planning strategy (country wide), which I think would've taken the country to the next level... I don't believe in built-from-scratch cities (by govs), cities are grown organically by the people.

    The idea behind the wall might be that it could create some kind of temperature differential to help trap moisture behind the wall. A lot of evaporation is caused by air, not just by the sun, so perhaps if you build a wall against the wind current that consistently blows strongly in one direction you could trap moisture on the other side and slowly build up a temperature differential that would create a feedback loop.

    These sorts of megaprojects have been done many times throughout history: usually they're disasters (like Xi Jinping's failed Xiongan planned city), and at best they end up being very expensive decorations (like the Great Pyramids). If you want to invest in your country, invest in the *average* person's productivity with things like roads, schools, etc.

    • @stephendoherty8291
      @stephendoherty8291 Рік тому +7

      I'd surmise that the roads and schools are pretty good already in KSA. With higher oil and gas prices, there is a current windfall and the longer the war lasts. the better for KSA even if demand does fall due to a slowing world economy. China has yet to go back to full steam ahead and it has the money to kickstart it and it needs lots of gas to move off coal. The bigger issue is a population used to the "easy" life and the oil ATM machine. KSA sees the UAE and thinks it can copy it (why not apart from the airport hub). At present the biggest influx of revenue apart from oil is the Haj to Mecca. Its nice to have but its not enough (and it costs KSA as well). Egypt has developed their side of the Red Sea into a tourist magnet so why not the KSA. Tourism does not need advanced skills. Riyadh will soon be near unhabitable in the summer heat extremes. Like China, construction employs alot for a time and it keeps the wheels turning. KSA is trying to move away from oil but just nudging it is a massive task. KSA must find answers by 2050 (if not 2040ish) or the days of a big oil gift will be ending. KSA also has a very young population and keeping them working stops them getting political.

    A line makes it incredibly inefficient for travelling around. What if you live in one end and you get a job on the other end? You'll be commuting 170km to work every morning !

      That train has got to stop at stations, and that's at least one minute average per station and 1km max per station that's still 170 stations with 170 minutes of stationary time.
      Even if trains skipped stations you have at least 50+ minutes of train stationary time. Add that to the 30 minutes time and you have at least 80 minutes of travel end to end. ( Ignoring the brutal acceleration of your imaginary 340kph underground train ).
      Either way ridiculously inefficient.
