- Brewzilla 65L GEN 4 - One Keg Batch - 2nd Brew Impressions
This video covers my second brew, a one keg batch, with the currently unreleased Brewzilla 65L GEN 4.
This is all done without wasting your time with waffle with a focus on information.
A two keg batch experience guide will follow in some weeks before release.

Really appreciate the no bs attitude you bring to your videos and how you help people make informed decisions without pitching them a product. :)
Cheers Mitchell, yes this is an important aspect to me.
Thanks David, great insight as usual. I’ve got a 35l gen 3 & seriously looking at this for stronger / larger batches. I’m still new to brewing, just a year in & an area of interest to me Is setting up the equipment profile in Brewfather and then tweaking it for my efficiency levels. Done this a bit on gen 3 but still not perfect. Thanks again you’ve got me off to a great start brewing
Great to hear Dave. I have shared profiles for GEN 4 within Brewfather that came from Kegland that I have had great results from. Here is a link:- ua-cam.com/video/hXkcbIfy624/v-deo.html
Great video again, as i have said previously, the GEN4 are a great value purchase. Delighted with my Gen4 35l.
Cheers Davie 🍻🍻🍻
Can't wait for it to be available here in Brazil! I already have the Rapt pill and it works wonderfully with the portal. This ecosystem that Kegland is creating is really nice!
Great to hear. There are many cool plans ahead too 🍻🍻🍻
I've done a few 1 keg batches on mine. Works a charm.
Sure does 🍻🍻🍻
The speed and accuracy of the step mash heating was impressive.
For sure. More coming on this before release
Another great video David.....teasing me with the 65L Gen 4 though hahahahaha
Thanks Mick. Double batch brew planned for this weekend 🍻🍻🍻
Can't wait for this to come to europe
Not long now :)
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Almost 1 year later, I finally have my gen 4 65L! Really happy with it :) cheers
I thin one of the most important aspects of a brewing system is also how easy it is to clean properly. I'd really like to know how easy the gen 4 is to clean, especially when it can now drain completely from the bottom, and also with the new plastic spray "ball" that Kegland will also release. Can I just dump most of the trub, give it a rinse, fill it with cleaning solution and start the pump and call it a day? :) Just an idea of something for you to also review.
I agree. I think, “Super Easy” covers it in a nutshell. Yes you simply take out the false bottom and add clean off the hops, perhaps into a bag. Rinse off the false bottom. Dump the trub, quick rinse then do the usual cleaner and water routines. The cleaning liquid can be resused that day as its not had to deal with trub.
I really wanted this system, but living in the UK with our 13A power supply has put me off. Such a shame, but I can only use a system that runs on 13A. So I am going to have to start saving for the Grainfather G40.
You dont have anything higher in your kitchen or bathroom?
Tanks for god info!
Cheers Fredrik 🍻🍻🍻
Fantastic information as usual. I saw another UA-camr mention that the PID was off on GEN 4 but it seems that he did not understand what he was talking about looking at the comments on that video. Any thoughts on this ? I am really looking forward to the 65L system.
Cheers Alan. Yeah he got it wrong as others pointed out in the comments 🙃🙃🙃.
He has also only tested the 35 so far.
The 65 is for sure the one to get to my mind, having used them both a fair bit now due to its extra flexibility and heating power.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew I figured as much. He should probably take that video down. Yeah, the 65 is the one I want.
Yeah, I guess if he was going to do that then he would have already. Sad but true.
I will not purchase Kegland products any more I have a Brewzilla 65l and love it. I was relay looking forward to upgrading to the gen4. However I damaged my control board, and spare parts are not available in the states. So now I have a $600 of scrap because I cant get a $30 part.
I find that crazy to hear and it just cannot be right. If where you bought the BZ isnt playing ball then I suggest you contact Kegland directly in Australia. They will help you for sure.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks but I did try that. They don’t ship to the states
Hmm ok. Really the duty of care is with the retailer. I do not know how the law works where you live but in Norway the retailer by law has to replace the part or provide a whole new system or a refund within reasonable time for 5 years after purchase. Your retailer can obtain the part from Kegland and in warranty cases this is supplied free of charge. Do not put up with poor service.
Love the videos! Would it be possible to brew a one keg batch of high gravity beers on this, for example an imp. stout? When brewing a one keg batch, what would be the max amount of grain?
Cheers Erik. Yes, it totally is.
I have a video that explains grain volumes and also the options you have with upgrading this and volume too. I think watching this is best for the full picture for both models:- ua-cam.com/video/cT1jMkifqK8/v-deo.html
Hi David, thanks again for this educational video.
Does this Brewzilla 65L work on a normal power outlet here in Europe?Or we need some modification?
Because I read some observations from UK and Ireland that this system won`t work on their power because of their 13 amp limits.
I dont know know is in the rest of Europe.?
Hi Davor. Yes a normal EU socket. You will need a 15/16 amp fuse though. Usually in bathrooms and kitchens though, so that works well.
Nice review!
It seems that the false bottom retains only hops, right? Do you throw away the first liters when transfering to fermenter to get rid of the proteins?
Do you whirlpool? I think it doesnt make sense, since the cone will be sucked by the pump, right?
Thank you. There is no need to throw anything away as such, though some might skip the last half litre. Personally I transfer from the top and just use the tap to fully empty and clean. Since there is a false bottom there is no need for a whirlpool. This will capture hop and trub solids.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew how do you transfer from the top? Do you use an external pump?
I connect a counterflow chiller via camlock to the top, then use the systems pump. You can transfer using the mash arm too, again from the top, using the systems pump.
2:32 low oxygen brewing mentioned... nice.
Cheers 🍻🍻🍻
Great video David! Can you tell me the max batch of wort with sparge this machine can do at the end of a brewday? Thanks Man
Hi, Just saw this. Sorry for the late reply. 55L is easy enough.
Thanks for the video. Can you push mash and boil profiles to the Gen 4 Brewzilla from Brewfather in the same way that you can to some Grainfather models?
Thanks Richard. At this point these are entered into the RAPT platform website. It is fast and easy though, each will probably take you about 30 seconds at the most.
Please do also a comparison with the Gen 4 65l + 2 Extensions and the 100l Gen 4 system. To See the Speed of Heating. How the destiller can bei used? Ist ist planned to have Here a Video too? Ist There any time frame known when the 100l vessel is available in General mor important in Europe. Will this bei in 2022?
As I understand it they will both have the same heating element of 3.5kw, so no real need for tests. The 100L version is more likely to be 2023 for Europe but its possible for 2022.
when u say one keg, what exactly do you mean? a standard half barrel (keg) is 58.6 liters or 15.5 gallons. are you referring to a korny keg of 5 gal?
A standard homebrewers keg is 19L, the Cornelius variety.
Hello David. I'm wondering if it's not too fast to raise temperature about 7 deg in only 2,5 minutes? It was assumed not to heat faster than 1 deg per minute because of some melanoidin off flavour due to large amount of heat. Maybe this rule applies when you heating up with gas. Best regards
When I did a 5L batch in the 65L it worked great. Must be as fast as it gets on this.
Almost ready for my first all grain brew with my 65l gen 4. I've been reading a lot of clogged pump issues with v4 (both with mash and hops). Any precautions I should take for my first shot? Rice hulls? Pump speed?
Great to hear. Ive not managed to clog mine once and ive used a lot of hops. Unfortunately I believe this is down to people using grain that is crushed way too finely. A sensible crush will work 🍻🍻
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks so much. Suggestion for a safe milling gap? I'll let you know how my first experience was!
Here is my guide, its more than just gap size:- ua-cam.com/video/DpI4jh8Uj44/v-deo.html
Hi David, great video thanks. I've just done my first brew on the Gen 4 and noticed more trub getting into the fermenter than the Gen 3. Gen 3 always left a few litres of sludge behind, due to the outlet located on the side, whereas Gen 4 pretty much empty's the entire thing. Just wondering what your thoughts are?
i.e. do you just empty the kettle into the fermenter, or do you wait for the clear wort before doings so?
Are you transferring via the bottom tap?
I transfer via the recirculation arm personally to avoid this.
Hi David. Thanks a lot for your brilliant videos. I'm doing my first 20L brew on my new Brewzilla gen4 65L equipment. I started with controller default settings but found out that the temperature was fluctuating up to 6c during mashing. I then enabled PID (which is not default) and then the mashing temperature was stabilized. I have programmed a profile with multiple mash steps and set the timer to start when the mashing temperature is reached. It's heating very fast between the steps but the last 0,5c is taking forever before it reach the timer temperature. It can take 10-15 min. before the last 1/2c is reached. Do you know if this can be adjusted maybe in the PID algorithm? I have tried with temperature hysteresis but it does not have any effect. It's quite visible in my graph but cannot show it here. The mashing temperature is 0,2-0,5c below the set mashing temperature in general. I cannot find any detailed guide for the PID algorithm. Best regards, Jan - Denmark.
Hi Jan, yes you will need to adjust the PID for those types of volumes. Check out KL video on doing this. I will follow with something soon myself.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Hi David. Thank you very much, I'll try to check their channel. Best regards, Jan
@@janhansen7446 Here is a link to that video, I will be making my own soon that just focusses on PID. ua-cam.com/video/V2Vxd_xMw1g/v-deo.html
My guide is not far off.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Hi David. Thanks a lot. I also found this video after my brewday and I can se that the default PID values are not optimal. I now better understand what happened and it can be improved. It would be great to have a reference set for different sizes like 5L, 10L, 20L, 40L and 60L brews. It also looks like I should put the RAPT thermometer and new buttom plate on my xmas wishlist this year 😊. I was impressed with the system and the very fast heating compared to my old GF G30. The programming have a lot of development ahead of it compared to GF, but very simple profiles are easy to create so far. Br Jan
Thanks for the video you mentioned 3.4kw of heating power is this the same for the 35l?
Hi Ben, no. The 35L has 2.2kw. Its not as fast but it works well enough. I have a video coming for the 35L version soon too.
Would be very interesting if you have any experience in malt capacity in the 35L, without loosing too much efficiency
Sure. The malt pipe will hold 10.5kg of grain but 8kg is the efficient maximum.
New sub ! Liked
Thank you, great to hear 🍻🍻🍻
Hi David, what counterflow chiller did You use?
I have a Grainfather G30 CFC that I have converted to camlocks that I use.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thank You I have it too, now I must wait Brewzilla to start selling in Europe😀
August/September, so not long now 🍻🍻🍻
Can you please tell something about the efficiency for the minimum and maximum amaount and the optimal amount of 35 and 65 liters?
Check this out, each brew has been made using these numbers and they have been very close:- ua-cam.com/video/hXkcbIfy624/v-deo.html
What is the difference in slow boil and vigorous boil in the end beer?
Hi Jan, a more vigorous boil will lead to more boil off. Less volume but a higher SG. A gentle rolling boil is all you need.
So, BZ 65L or S40?
The Brewzilla GEN 4 65 has some key advantages. Ranging from a much better smart controller to much more modern and more powerful heating. The S40 is much more basic.
