Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy recently stirred up a hornet’s nest when he advocated 70 Hours Work Week for youngsters so that India can compete with economies that progressed in the last two to three decades. "India's work productivity is one of the lowest in the world," Murthy said while speaking to former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai for a podcast, The Record. "So therefore, my request is that our youngsters must say, ‘This is my country. I’d like to work 70 hours a week," Murthy said, adding that this is exactly what the Germans and Japanese did after the second world war. "They made sure that every German worked extra hours for a certain number of years." His comments drew critical reactions from netizens, although several industry leaders such as JSW Group CMD Sajjan Jindal, Ola cabs Co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal of Ola, and Pai supported his view. The recent remark by Infosys Co-founder spotlights a pressing question - in the era of AI, what holds greater weight the hours logged or the impact created? and can they truly be disentangled? Business Today Tv’s Managing Editor Siddharth Zarabi spoke to Team Lease services' Vice - Chairman Manish Sabharwal, Swarajya's Editorial Director R Jagannathan and Dr NS Rajan Former CEO IDFC.

It is not important how many hours you work, but how effectively work in a given time frame.

Work harder and smarter. Implement the Japanese philosophy of "Kaizan" - be in a constant state of improvement.

Let them pay salary for 70 hours. Then it is fine.
Companies must look to increasing productivity.
Respect is due to Modi government and not due to any of the industrial houses.

Ask them to Donate all their money for there Country. If not atleast donate like Sir Ratan Tata and do the social welfare like TATA Group 😁😂. All Business Man and Bosses mast say this is my country I must give my all part or most part of my profit to social welfare and taxes to my Country Because if they will do like that so India can compete China😂.

It surprises me that almost none of the discussions on this 70 hr work week debate points to a commensurate pay for the 70 hours. Hard work is fine but where's the sweet fruit for that?

What matters is what will be the compounded annual growth rate of return on investing the precious time of my life after 5 years of working for 70 hrs per week. If it is higher than the return on equity generated by the company in its operations I am ready to give 70 hrs a week. Let us be hard core capitalist and discard all emotional nonsense. Period !

If you want to become the next Elon Musk, then you have to work more than 70 hours or even longer but if you don't have a dream to become Elon Musk, then it doesn't matter how many hours you work and thats why the per capital income of USA on an annual basis is around $70,000/- whereas in India it would be around $3,000/- and maybe india will never be able to achieve the number as close to USA and the reason for this is because the total number of inventions are very less compare to USA and other western countries on an annual basis in order to improve the standard of the living of the common people. I don't remember if India ever invented anything that has improved the standard of living. Ofcourse UPI is made in india which is helping the govt a lot to improve the common life of people across the country. India needs more such inventions on an annual basis.
