I love watching your channel because you truly love this hobby and care about it, not like other “gaming channels”… that complain about everything and enjoy nothing about gaming. I also love Art books and you are right i think its great when you can see how they made the game and the artwork and read about it more, its truly special. I hope you continue with these great videos :)
Thank you so much! This made my day! I suppose this video isn't the best example of me "not complaining" haha! My favorite stuff from art books are definitely the "rough sketches". I get tired of seeing the finished art work all the time. The process of creation is what fascinates me as well! Thank you so much for this comment :)I appreciate you!
Oh gosh. I'm definitely known for my slips of the tongue! It really is quite lovely! I like the new switch lite version as well! Though I probably won't be picking that one up!
Back in the ps2 days they would do limited editions which was essentially the 'launch' edition, and it would normally just have a cardboard or lentiular sleeve and a soundtrack cd....for the same price as the regular. Great, relaxing vid as always 😎
Yes! I remember these! Atlus did this a bunch and I always loved them. There are a couple companies who do this now... (Like trinity trigger) but they usually charge 10 dollars extra for this edition. And thank you so much! I appreciate you!
I’m always a gamer first, so just owning a physical copy of the game is the most important thing to me. My space is also limited so I don’t want to be the curator of things I would feel obligated to keep. I would however buy a collectors edition if it was something that I felt was very cool or just had to have. Subtle collectors editions are more than welcome, like the Zelda one you had shown. I love useful items like controllers or soundtracks.
Another excellent edition you added to the channel 32Bit. The only time I collect limited edition goodies is for the Neo-Geo from homebrew/indie developers these days. The rest are nice of course, but I feel it's better in other gamers possession. Thank you for sharing your video with us brother man. Great way to enjoy my Sunday night. 8^) Anthony...
Thank you so much, Anthony! I've definitely come to the point of being burnt out on collector's editions. My favorite ones are the TINY ones lol I'm going to have to do some research into those homebrew Neo geo games! I don't have any!
100% agree with this. I was beyond excited when they announced the Star Ocean Second Story remake last year. Immediately I went to look and attempt to pre order the collectors edition to find out it was $200 and only included a bunch of acrylic stands and a soundtrack. The soundtrack is nice, but those acrylic stands are so dumb to me when they are the focal point. Same with Dragon Quest 3 HD, which only comes with Acrylic Stands. So lame. But like you said, it's not all bad. I though the Unicorn Overlord CE was super cool, especially for the price. Anyways rant over. Great content as always!
I did the same thing! I was so excited, but decided to not get it due to the standees being the "highlight". (I kind of expect soundtracks to be included with every collector's edition) I actually didn't see the DQ one! Too bad they're going with the standees again! Unicorn overlord is definitely a unique one! Especially the fact they include a whole card game! loved that! And thank you so much! I appreciate you!
I discovered your channel because UA-cam recommended your video on the FF9 strategy guide to me (probably because I too am crazy about videogame strategy guide / companion books and love owning them, and so I'm also well aware of the disaster that was the FF9 guide D:) and so I went on to check out your other videos, and I've got to say I really enjoy hearing someone else "geek out" about physical game merchandise with such passion!! On the topic of collector's editions, I'm also quite disappointed with the modern state of them. The most recent example I can think of would be Monster Hunter - I own the collector's editions for both Monster Hunter World and Iceborne, and both of them are just perfect & spotless in my eyes (incredible artwork that makes the box itself a worthwhile item; physical hardcover artbook, physical soundtrack CD, physical game, and fantastic figures; with Iceborne additionally coming with a really cool metal plate that can be stood on a table or hung on a wall) - and both collector's editions even complement each other really well (World using largely black colours, Iceborne using largely white / blue colours, for all of the items included). Then, Rise and Sunbreak released... and we didn't even get a physical copy of the game on PS4 at all (digital only). And while there was a special edition for the Switch, it was very barebones by comparison... and now with Wilds coming out, I was hoping for them to announce a collector's edition after confirming physical copies were coming for PS4, but then I discovered that pretty much all the items look like dollar store toys and the most expensive version is like $1,500 and comes with a bike... what?! And while not quite as bad, as someone who collects a lot of Soulsborne-related stuff, I feel like Bandai completely lost their minds with the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree collector's edition - $250 for a figure which is advertised as being really tall, but the actual height just comes from the spear while the figure itself is very averagely sized (and while subjective, the design just isn't all that appealing IMO)... and a 40 page physical artbook (which is nice, but the same used to be included for Dark Souls 1 and Demon's Souls for just $60 when they launched, and DS2/3 respectively had artbooks in the 100-200 page range), and a digital-only soundtrack. And apparently the artbook got delayed and shipped separately, so most people effectively only got the figure when it initially shipped. There are many other examples I could speak of (both good and bad), but thought I'd share some that I have a more personal connection to. I do miss the days when "physical game (+ manual) + physical artbook + physical soundtrack + figure (+ other extras)" used to be the golden formula for collector's editions and they were priced reasonably and affordably (150 bucks or less). These days we just get a lot of (often times cheap-looking) knick-knacks, no physical games, no physical soundtracks, and in some cases, not even a physical artbook either, while simultaneously being far more expensive than the content-rich collector's editions of yore (Hogwarts Legacy being a particularly poor example...). With the ever-progressing push for an all-digital gaming landscape, I fear that this trend will continue its trajectory, but I'm still hoping that maybe someday, collector's editions will be saved somehow - because I do love owning quality memorabilia for my favourite games (as a way to cherish them, and at the same time "extend" their lifespan), and it's always a bummer when they completely flunk that particular aspect - especially with franchises that otherwise offer much fertile ground for it. Apologies for the long comment, I tend to do that with topics that I'm passionate about. XD But it's always nice to see others passionate about videogames as well as their physical "manifestations" - you've earned yourself a sub!
Thank you so much! When it comes to merchandise it's an extension of the games, stories, characters, and music that we love! So when they treat it with such laziness and disrespect it's so angering! It's also super annoying when they release games as a digital release, but then release a physical edition exclusively through a single store AND at an inflated price that's more than just 5 or 10 dollars. At that point it's just taking advantage of the fans and their love of the games. I did NOT hear about that 1500 dollar Wilds edition! That is INSANE. And to your point about the statues... I'm all for a nice statue. I'm even all for a nice statue being expensive! But when Square Enix charges 400 dollars for a FF7 statue made out of PVC plastic... that's where you lose me lol I'm hoping we are just in the middle of a rocky section when it comes to these editions and that companies learn from our complaints! But at the end of the day, so many of us (including myself) cave in and buy these things out of our love of the games! So maybe we are just digging ourselves a deeper hole lol Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and support! It was a lovely read and really nice knowing that I'm not the only one so obsessed with this stuff! haha
I clicked on the video because I spotted the Rain Code edition on the thumbnail. I wanted to hear your opinion on it cause I like the plushie and the art book and I was like: oh no, he dropped everything, the art book was in there, surely, oh no he forgot that it was on there... I can't believe the ps5 edition removed it, whyyyy!?!? D':
I actually just finished that game the other day! The plush is really wonderful quality, but I was so incredibly disappointed about the lack of an artbook. If that was included it would have changed my opinion completely! It's such a beautiful looking collection otherwise! (The steelbook is STUNNING)
For 3-400 I’m gonna need the statues of all 9 main characters hell I’m gonna need a statue of REEVE SCARLET HOJO RUFUS THE TURKS AND PRESIDENT SHINRA! A quality art book a book with behind the scenes interviews good interviews not those surface shitty interviews of whose your favorite character no a real interview of how you chose the actors how you decided the story direction etc. they are crazy that’s damn near the price of a new ps5
It's INSANE when you think about the fact that some of these editions are actually the same price or MORE than a gaming console... and yet they only include a PVC statue. At least throw in a CD at that price hahahaha
Collector's Editions are just... So frustrating. You've got some that are decent (Tears of the Kingdom comes to mind, some pretty decent stuff in there for a reasonable price) and you've got some that are reasonable (Unicorn Overlord with the card game/art book and 16 But Soundtrack is cool, but I got it on sale) and Persona 5 One More Edition was OK (again, on sale). Then you have Limited Run Games. The new Sonic/Shadow Generations collection is over $400 CAD. They've released 3 separate releases of TMNT Shredder's Revenge, and so many of their collectors editions are just JUNK. Not to mention some companies who only sell their collectors editions through their own stores (Square Enix and Bandai Namco are the worst) but the shipping and fees there are egregious. I like iam8bit and Fangamer. They're awesome 😅
I actually ALMOST included Unicorn overlord in this. I was on the edge of thinking it was disappointing (mainly due to the price), but then decided it just barely qualified as passable (in my mind). I really liked the card game they included! Don't even get me started with limited run! I think a lot of people are starting to get fed up with their ever increasing prices/lesser quality editions. SE has been definitely disappoint me lately with that... which is such a shame because those editions they put out are legitimately AMAZING! I am definitely a fan of iam8bit and fan gamer! I've had wonderful experiences with them... especially their vinyl releases!
If they insist on getting rid of soundtracks and art books put something in its place of value like in depth interviews with composers sharing thoughts on their toughest or favorite songs, voice actors share how they are approaching their characters, story board creators sharing their intention behind the direction. Give us a signed poster give us character cards with a random card signed by the characters voice actor. Show us some appreciation some creativity. Lazy
I completely agree! I would LOVE more things relating to the development of the game! Storyboard prints would be COOL. It's just the passionless throw ins that I hate!

World of Final Fantasy had a super large pop up book for its collector's edition. It was very cool but probably a bit too large to keep around.
That is really cool! I had no idea! The game itself didn't appeal to me so I never looked into any of its editions!
