Josh Derksen who works on the Aces AI system, also did multiple releases for an AI system of another game 'Star Trek Alliance' which is the Solo / Cooperative game mode using AI system for the Star Trek Attack Wing tabletop game. And it was such a blast to play that game. So I look forward to seeing what he will do for Aces in Battletech. Love Love Love!
What a brutal game. The Highlanders had it in the bag until they completely whiffed a whole round of shooting. That Fire Moth is a brutal little bastard.
43:56 If you lost initiative, the opponent always gets the last move. Also, the AI wouldn’t move behind a unit that hasn’t moved yet. Very good video, I look forward to trying ACES myself and seeing how it goes. Very good walkthrough of how it works in practice.
Wow both of the AI matches have been impressive. This will be a fun way to introduce my daughter to miniature board game. I agree really big potential for other systems. Thanks Ash for another great video.
My play through of the second mission was lots of fun. Jade Falcon got off to a good start early by torching some Highlander mechs. But the Highlanders managed to get on a roll and soon only the Warhammer, the Archer, and the Atlas (minus its armor) were the last men standing.
I actually like the idea of limiting lucky rolls to 7+, it makes the skill far less overpowered for normal damage rules. I do think that they could implement a movement priority for the AI decks by assigning the cards numerical values and starting movement with the lowest or highest. This would also give some more unique elements to each deck as the support ones would end up going first more and the recon/strikers going last more to take advantage of positioning.
This is the second game i've seen where the aces deck worried live players all the way to the end. Does this mean that all the complex human tactical acumen can be replicated by mere cards?? are we just glorified playing pieces? Will cardstock become our new overlords?? (looks nervously at MTG Red deck)
Would love to see an Alpha Strike vs Steel Rift vs Gamma Wolves comparison. I think this would really help new players like me make a decision where to start.
really hope people watch the outro. It's the best part' making solid points about this mode. not a fan of AS but i DO see the value in this easily digestable mode, especially with single player rules. Great stuff Ash!
Teaching BT to my 10yo sonnwhile I still learn the game is what has me most intrigued with Aces. I was debating on whether or not to buy the Alpha Strike box as the alt rules would be nice, but figured it was a solid investment just for the mechs, but watching both your intro to Aces videos has me really liking this. Plus I'm a busy husband & father of nine so I don't have much time to go game with a group (outside of my Tribe here at home), so the solo aspect is great & really looking forward to my son & I playing together against the AI. Hopefully this will also get some of my teens interested in it as well. I am a Battalion supporter onnthe Merc KS so I'm curious when this will be available (or did I miss it in an update), and is it playable with just the Alpha Strike rules fromnthe CGL site or do I need (or is it better) to just buy the AS box (give me a reason!)?
It's a small one, but the only feedback I can think of is instead of "P" for Sprint, they could just call it Run, and use "R" instead. (I could have sworn it was always Run...)
They need a missile boat and a juggernaut deck added to the existing beta decks at minimum. I agree with your comments about being a great way to demo the game for new players using co-op.
@@TheStrandedSavant Yeah - I didn't get an email either - turns out that's a mistake on their side and they don't send any emails - you have to go into the Kickstarter Updates section - the link to the Aces download is in Update 7 - have fun!
Ash, do you feel the initiative system needs work? Not for the AI but for the player. Should the player(s) have free choice where and which units they can activate, or should it be separate initiative for each player controlled asset to not game the AI cause you know which one is going to activate next?
"units will use the Lucky ability granted by their Battle Star formation whenever they need rolls of 7 or better and miss." So Ash was actually doing this backwards as "7 or better" means 7 or less but he was playing that they would reroll if they missed on a 7+ TN. Easy to mixup
It was either during the Adepticon stream or one of the videos on SixSidesofGaming's UA-cam channel, but the devs mentioned approaching GW prior to approaching CGL. The impression I got was GW might have been interested, but they wouldn't sign a document that would protect the Aces devs' rights to their idea. That doesn't necessarily mean GW would have had any ill intent, business is complicated. I'm happy it led to us getting Aces.
You continue to play initiative wrong. Whichever side wins initiative has the last move. Turn 3 should have went IS-CL-IS-CL-IS-CL-IS-IS-CL so Clan has last move. Turn 4 should have went CL-IS-CL-IS-CL-IS-CL-IS-IS with IS going last as they won initiative. Turn 5 should have gone IS-CL-IS-CL-IS-CL-CL. When determining uneven activation, you work backwards from the end of the round with more activations per turn at the end of the movement until the number of activations even out. Page 32 in the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition has a chart for this, but basically you calculate at the beginning of each step the movements and not during the midstep.
The Firemoth is the definition of a scary fast glass cannon.
Oh, man! The idea of having a campaign book with some extra cards to let yourself play through it is freakin' killer.
I'm going to use the "variable damage" rule for this for sure. Should make for some absolute grindfests.

If CGL puts a little bit more work into this, it'll be an amazing supplement for AS!

It would be sick if you collab with Death From Above Wargaming on a battletech video

Steel Rift also supports Ash and DRD ;) lol! Excited for more stompy mech combat though!

The multiple attack optional rule really helps this game
100% I can’t think I’ll ever play without that rule. It adds so much to the gameplay.

Would be curious to know if it plays differently with the D12s and Variable Damage.
Just picked up this box! Hype to try it out!
Missing... file... who did not pay his Comstar bills this month? 😁
That was amazingly close. This is really exciting
Looks like a must for when my Mechwarriors are in the infirmary.
Pretty excited about this, and hope they do start to make big co-op campaigns
Why not just use the campaign books and use the ai for the opfor 😊

I dare say the finished product will have decks for all Roles.
That's a given!
Damn, the Warhawk hit the wraith so hard the video deleted itself!
This is really fun!
When will you release "man reads Vampire book" video? :D I want to hear your thoughts on it. It's pretty devisive from judging from what's on the web
10:10 at least from a viewer‘s perspective the Nova is like 90-95 % visible so no +1 for cover (might look different in real life)
Noice job Ash.
A few bad dice rolls? That’s a nice way of putting it. Like the rules though.
This is really cool! When will the final version come out?
Really cool - I may just have backed a certain Kickstarter and got hold of these rules for myself...
I put 600$ in but no beta email

Just standard magic!

So as a Regiment Backer how do I get my hands on the beta PDF Aces?
There is a link i the 2nd update on kickstarter. There is a google drive link in it.
Dude, are you rolling Jay's dice?
Could this sort of AI card system be done for 40K. Maybe player with a squad against an AI demon prince? Or AI knight?
