I skipped the welding step and it still works perfectly, no loss of strength to the backplate, and the caliper covers up the cut, once its all back together. Watch out for where the hand brake cable connects on the the hand brake shoe mechanism, it could be siezed, and if you disassemble it fully there is a tiny pin that can be easily lost. The main mistake I made was not to order and fit new handbrake shoes/discs&pads. A new spring kit is also essential in my view.
Great vid. I didn't think it would work on my Mercedes CLK cabrio but if you cut in the right place you cannot see the joint when the brake shield is re-fitted. Also the shield reforms into the original shape with no problem. I'm no great welder but a couple of small areas were no prob. This is a truly excellent idea - thanks for sharing and the advice!
Great video. I have gl450 and the backing plate is is decent shape but the locking pin holes for the e brake spring is rusted. Any ideas of a way to fix without replacing it all? Can I put a washer on the backside?
Hello, fantastic video, I’ve been left in this situation too!! Can I ask what size are the screws that bolt the dust cover back on? I take it they are M6 but how long is the thread?
Unfortunately Merc's are not what they used to be. Ive been working on vehicles of all types for 33 years. Merc's have just gone downhill since the 80's. Overpriced run of the mill products now. This is a perfect example of crappy materials and poor engineering by designers that have never worked on vehicles. Good for you figuring out a short cut around this.No pun intended! ... I'm working on a 2016 Sprinter 2500 ,doing same job but mine are mounted under wheel bearing housing Damn it!
As previously mentioned, lose the music. Personally I would touch up the cut edges with zinc rich paint and leave out the welding. If you do weld, dont forget to disconnect the battery.
The music is louder than you are old bean, aside from that though, good video. Why people add music to otherwise good content will never fair to stump me.
Was ist das denn für ein Pfusch. Die Lager sowie auch die Schrauben neu. Das gammelt doch gleich wieder alles. Hätte vorher alles blank gemacht und mit Rostumwandler behandelt
Might have been a good learning video but the music was outrageous. I didn't make it past the first 2 minutes. Next time no music. It's not helping anything.
WARNING he starts off speaking very quietly so you turn up volume then he blasts your ears with terrible music. I will have to watch with sound muted.and skim through to the relevant parts
Don't do this it distorts the plate so much that when you put the brakes back on you will find they will not sit right, trust me I've ended up ordering another set of plates because of this.
Hei Jon Then you did it completly wrong, his method is aproved by Mercedes work shops. I have been working at one of them. and this method will save you for buying new wheel bearings. the plates has nothing to do with the mount of the brakes or how they work. these plates only cover the brake discs so water and dirt cant get sprayed onto the brake discs. do you have any pictures to show us, so i can guide you, and see what you did wrong? check if you switched left side with right side
@@rexthecarengineer4001 then you can't have worked on these cars because your whole statement is wrong. They do need to sit perfect, they do hold the retaining spings for the brakes and it will distort and rub against the disk.
the springs are only keeping the brake shoes on place for the handbrake nothing else. if they rub against the disc you have to do a full adjustment of the brake shoes. 1. release the handbrake 2. slag the handbrake cable, as much you can 3. put the disc on and turn the adjust screw on the brake shoes until the discs are braked (locked in place) then release it 5 clicks and then re adjust your cable and your handbareks is adjuested
@@rexthecarengineer4001 yes thanks already done that, but you completely missed my point, the little rim on the dust shield needs to sit flush any distortion in the plate will result in rubbing against the disk when it's put back on if he had continued in the video they would hear it clearly.
He clearly told you why he cut the plate. first, u have to pull out the bearing, this u will need a special tool for witch means $$$ seccond u have to buy new bearings since once they are pulled out they are destroyed witch means $$$ last u have to put the new bearings in, this can be done with the tool kit u used to remove the bearing with. Its all about money, its still a dyi repair video for those with less money.
Ahh yes yes, another wise person, sure, cut it, but in a year or max two youll have to change it again, plus that plate with that cut in wont protect the rest from water and dust, great idea how to fix your car for a year just to break the whole bearing in process, ehhh

Wow man you just saved me sooo much time on my sprinter brakes this weekend thank you
Np :) im happy that my guide video could help you
Well done. I like the way you point out all the little things, ie. Cleaning out the rust on the torx screws, as well. 👍

please lower the background music next times. thanks
This is defiantly one of the jobs ,that the short cut is the only logical way forward 😮😂

i cut mine with my hacksaw 2 mill gap bit of black silicone on gap both sides
Very useful. Thankyou for uploading.
i'm glad to hear that :)
Whats the background music? Every shop needs good beats to get the job done!
Great video. Thanks very much.
Very usefull video thnx for uploading
Np Tyler :)

The same way you do it, l did it the same
I highly doubt this is the official mercedes procedure
No kidding.
Mercedes should have designed the dust shield in two sections to begin with.

I figured you'd need to cut the damn thing. My parking brake just de-anchored and I can't believe how shit this design is.
And without replacing the screws 😏
Probably good video/guide,BUT bloody LOUD music on the background 🤦♂️Can't watch it. 🤬(WHY???)
Respect!
Just cut two slots dont bend the back plate
Use a mig weld plate back together
Why is the drive shaft disconnect
Work great with a single cut. Less welding and less places for rust formation even with paint.
💯
This is what salt does to your vehicle
Sound like danish man .
Next time, please don't add the annoying music (if one can call it that...).
Soundtrack unnecessary. Thanks.
Could you not just cut out the inner section of where the handbrake cable goes through and then slot it over ?

No
