    txg.ca - Many viewers ask us whether they are good enough to play blade irons, and the question of blade versus cavity design comes up very often in the golf community. In this video we tested a blade iron against a cavity iron with identical lofts to see what kind of performance differences we could find.

    As always, we really appreciate everyone taking the time to watch and join in on the discussion on the channel! Just wanted to leave a quick note regarding some of the feedback suggesting we do this test with a high handicap player. The reason we did not go that route is that we wanted to provide data that compares things like ball speed, launch angles, spin rates, forgiveness, etc. between the two club head designs. In order to do that most accurately, we felt that a consistent golf swing was best for the job. Introducing the high variability in swings that a high handicap player would produce (in our opinion) would greatly reduce the objectivity of the data provided and really just turn the test into a record of one player's experience with blades versus cavity back irons. In a perfect world, we'd be doing this sort of test with an actual swing robot to eliminate all variables introduced by an individual's golf swing. We hope you enjoyed the test, and stay tuned for future videos where we plan to dive into this topic even further!

      I play Wilson FG-59 baby tour blades...because I love how they look and feel...and for the very fact that they punish me for my mistakes. I don't think one can improve one's ball striking through the use of GI clubs. I also have a set of Cleveland Tour Action 3...small head, cavity back irons.... non offset. The two sets compliment each other very well...with similar head shape, size, loft and lie. I usually start the season with the Clevelands...then when my swing comes around...move to the Wilsons. I also find that playing blades keeps me from overswinging...leading to purer strikes and much greater consistency...without loss of distance. Just last week I hit my Wilson 9 iron 140yds to a back of the green pin position...then of course missed my birdie putt. Anyway...thanks for the video.

      I think the problem when comparing these two club designs, is Matt! He's just too damn consistent. Aren't you really attempting to compare forgiveness with this test? If so you need to compare similar off centre hits rather than perfect sweet spot contact. 10mm off centre on both clubs to see how much the game improvement club will bring the result back for less than perfect hits. Matt's just too good for this test to be meaningful imo.

      @@PrtPrtPrtGood Exactly what I was thinking. Its great that Matt was consistent. But to really dive into the worthiness of application for comparison purposes. Consistent 'off center' shots would seem to be a big piece missing from this experiment. I love this channel though, these guys come up with great ideas to test and then just do it.

    Blades get a bad wrap. More mass for lag, turf interaction, follow through and smoother transition. Well struck goes the exact distance. Poor struck hurts but unless over a hazard doesn't kill you. I also feel you learn faster because you can feel the misses more accurately. That said I'm not trying to win tournaments

    • @kourt2469
      @kourt2469 6 років тому +2

      Brant Chmiel what do you mean by more mass for lag? The head weight of a blade 8 is around 274 grams, the head weight for a cavity 8 iron is also 274 grams. They don’t weigh any more than the other.

      I went from a players iron to a game improvement iron and I honestly feel like it hurt my game. I feel like my swing has gotten sloppy from not having to strike the ball as well. seriously considering going back to a players iron and let my handicap suffer for a little bit until my swing gets more consistent

    I've just been back playing golf for 9 months after a 33 year hiatus. I've been through 3 sets of irons this year and come full circle today. I've gone back to what I knew as a boy in the '80s, a traditional club that I've only found out this year is referred to as a"blade"! It's a golf club that we all used until the Ping Eye 2 came out, nothing fancy, nothing special, or scary. I've bought a set of Miura MB 101s, and they're awesome! In fact, to those who think "blades" are scary, I'd argue the opposite: I'd rather that the ball looked bigger, because that's what you're trying to hit! Think about it! Also: I don't want to be rewarded for my mistakes, I want feedback to make me know what I've done wrong, and then I can make progress to be a better ball striker. You're not going to get that from so-called game improvement irons! It's time to take the stabilisers off! I feel like I'm six years old again and coming of age! Woo Hoo! The last time I felt like this was on a Raleigh Boxer!

    Thank you for continuing to educate me. I'm 61, mid-handicapper and using the MP69. Loving it though not relishing the punishments from the mishits. I chose it for three reasons; it forces me to focus, it's more flexible for loft & lie adjustments and lastly I have no interest in big club faces with offsets. And of course the icing on the cake is when you hit the sweet spot, the feeling is indescribable. Keep up the good work guys...

    Next level content guys. Pleased to see the blades perform so well as that has been my experience. Just don’t get the left and right dispersion I get with more offset cavity backs. Those misses get you in so much more trouble than the slightly mishit blade that comes up half a club to club short. Looking forward to the next video on hybrid v 5 wood. Your channel is compulsive viewing for anyone interested in clubs and improving ones game. Thanks again.

    Great video! Once again it shows that more people should be playing blades. The marketing has made people afraid of blades, when in fact they are more rewarding to hit and look better. Also, if a flaw creeps into your swing, the blade will show it faster, allowing the player to correct it faster before the flaw is grooved into their swing. Again, great show!

    Something that gets overlooked with MBs is that on mishits, they come up short which for me is actually a good thing. I would rather be straight and still short then go the same distance and be 15 yards to the left or the right that gets into real trouble.

    Completely agree that blades are more playable than some expect. I went in for a fitting a few years ago intending/trying to get something "more forgiving & consistent." Tried a bunch of players cavities and walked out with TaylorMade MBs. For my misses, the setup just worked, and solid shots are unbelievably similar.

    GREAT VIDEO! I find my ability to hit the middle of a golf club is directly correlated to how small the head size is - i.e. the smaller the head, the more centered my hits are. I play small headed irons now, even though I'm a mid-tens handicap. I'd love to play PING G irons but I end up spraying the ball all over and loosing my confidence. #golfindustrymarketingcrap

    FINALLY somebody do this right way 👍 Same loft, shaft and player and honest test. There is difference that can make difference, but it's not big. I have played cavity irons and then blades. Blades feels great but i was miss hitting them too much and that make me worry contact too much. Now i have blade wedges and cavity back irons. Future i will try short blade irons if i need distance control.

    I used to buy a set of Titleist 710 Mbs back in the day when I played of 20 just because I loved the look of them. I lowered my handicap to 8 in about a year and a half. But literally everyone recommended me a set of 712 ap2 so I bought and played them for about a year. Didn't see a massive difference in forgiveness. When you miss you are going to miss anyway. The turf interaction was very different too. Eventually I changed back to the blades and lowered my handicap to 1 within the next 4 years. I just prefer the look and turf interaction of a blade it also feels more consistent. This year I bought a new set of 718 mbs but a progressive set with the 4 and 5 as CBs. The best set of irons ever!

    This is some great information in here regarding offset. I really need to drive down to Toronto for a fitting when COVID is done, my appointment was cancelled on me because of the cases are up. I suffer from pulls and pull hooks as my miss. I noticed when I changed to Miura CB 801 from Ping ie irons that I have much less of a draw and hooks. There is very minimal offset in the Miura's in comparison and I had a hunch that my fewer hooks/pulls were related to the lack of offset in them! I had some MP-20 SEL's before as well and those too hooked much less! AWESOME info!

    I bought a beat up set of 710 MB's for $150 to practice with and ended up putting them in my bag. I found I mishit them a lot less than I did my AP2's, which I could only put down to the visuals of the MB being noticeably smaller so I subconsciously put a smoother swing on it because I knew my margin for error was smaller rather than overhitting my AP2's. I feel a lot of people are scared of hitting blades but there is no better club to hit when you're wanting to improve ball striking because the feedback from strike is instant.

    Great video guys. This is the most controlled blade v. cavity test that I've seen in the UA-cam universe. Also appreciated how you tied in the club design education to explain the output variances between them.
    One question - for cast irons, how much can the lie angle change over time since they have more limited adjustability?

    • @chynz330
      @chynz330 6 років тому +1

      Anthony McKenzie I'm not a fitter but I watch a lot of fittings and understand that cast clubs rarely, if ever, change in lie, particularly loft, because they are so rigid. You literally need a torch to bend them. Now that changes if you're constantly smacking clubs into trees or hitting rocks, but I know forged clubs need to be checked at least once a season because even for me, who barely plays, my lies and loft changed a degree with Mizunos Mp-53's with the 6,8,& Pw, clubs I use more. And I'm not even a hard hitter. They're just so soft!

    Love this video! As someone who grew up using 690MB to learn the game but just got into a set of P770, I can appreciate the results of this video. I don’t think there is much of a difference outside of look at address and turf interaction. It all comes down to preference, I actually prefer a blade but went with the slight cavity of the P770 for a few reasons, A)couldn’t quite get comfortable with look of 718MB of Mizuno blades at address, B) P730 doesn’t come in LH unfortunately but would have love to test those due to the shape at address. But love the look of P770 down at the ball, nearly no offset and pretty compact head, kinda best of both worlds. And as someone who only gets out once a week really anymore, that extra bit of help never hurts, although I think its 90% mental at that point.

    Cool comparison! Obviously the test doesn't take into account play over a period of time and playing conditions. I don't play too often these days and play on Scottish links courses. Although I see the benefit for me to move to something more forgiving than my blades, I'm not sure how workable they would be. It would have been a good thing to see Matt trying to hit a variety of shots, from knock down half shots to high/low draws/fades to see how the two compare. I appreciate this wasn't the purpose of todays test, but perhaps you could do this as a follow up?

    This video made me feel better about the decision of heading to blades in my next set of irons. I've tried a couple of sets now and i like the way they look, feel and perform compared to my current p770's. And they're not a bad set either. I was fit to the mizuno mp18 with px lz 6.5 and I've also hit the apex mb with nippon modus 120x. Both felt great and performed well for me. I honestly thought this video may have ended up with reasons why not to go into bladed irons but it just backed up the fact that it wouldn't be an issue. Great video as always guys 👍👍

    I loved this review, because it shows that good ball strikers can play blades. I play Mizuno MP69's & I love them, I have tried cavity weighted clubs & I hated the way they felt.
    Correct me if I am wrong, it appears most PGA players are playing blades more over the last 10 years, .

    I'm beginning to sound repetitive, but another super informative, made easy to understand video for us "normal, non technical" golfers. The standard keeps increasing with everyone one of your productions, well done. HOWEVER, Ian, are you losing your Scottish identity? In today's video Matt was hitiing a Zee 565 iron but in a previous video he was hitting a Zed Star ball, so where are you going with your pronunciation ? lol lol :) Keep up the GREAT WORK (from a British Expat living in Malaysia)

    Great video guys. I think a lot of golfers are deterred from trying players/blade like irons because of of the sigma that those clubs are only for single to low handicap golfers. I think that golfers need to consider what is appealing to the eye as they set up to the ball. If a club doesn't look good to me at address, I usually don't hit it well. Keep you the great content. Always look forward to your videos. Any chance for a WITB on Lydia Ko given she just won recently?

    I’ve been a Nike blade player for about 15 years and I’m reluctant to give them up because I simply love the feedback and buttery feel when hitting the sweet spot. Even when I know I can get more “help” from the modern iron blade. Do you recommend any other modern blade that would be a good “modern” transition for me to try? Thanks for doing this!

    This is why 10 of the worlds top 13 play blades in 2018 (DJ, JT, JR, RF, RM, HM, PR, SG, TF, PC). Its a shame manufactures can't make reduced offset cavities like they do for the pro's.

    • @kourt2469

      M L most companies make atleast one cavity model with minimal offset. Usually designed to pair up with the mb version to make a combo set.

    Great video- I would however have liked to see this video done with the same brand to keep the metal and craftmanship similar. I am, however, a lefty as well and realize that few club brands make their whole line up in lefty.

    I was a Callaway X Hot2 Pro player for the last 3 years, I have now gone to Mizuno MP18 Blade 7-pw and MMC 4,5,6. I am so much more consistent with my distances and left to right dispersion with the blades then with the small cavity backs of the x Hots. Granted I've lost about a club and a half of distance but I knew that would be the case and my iron play has never been better.

    Very interesting! Most of the manufacturers unfortunately only offer blades with super stiff shafts which only those with very fast swing speeds can hit. So it's a case of no matter how much you like the shape of the blade head, unless you're prepared to pay extra for differents shafts, there isn't much joy. Ben Hogan are offering blade heads with a large range of shaft option - from heavy Gold Dynamic shafts to light UST graphite shafts.

    Hey guys and welcome back. Thanks just for a few swings but a lot of good discussion between both of you two.
    The take-home-message for me is to think even more of a "combo set": blades for the shorter clubs for feel and awesome consistency, cavaties for the longer clubs with their advantages.
    What do you think about?
    But nevertheless: one has gotta be fit by YOU👍🏻

    The comments should talk about swing paths not slice or hook. I tend to slice, but not because of my swing path. I am just getting back into the game and realize that I have really bad early extension, so I tend to heel the ball and slice it a ton. When I hit it well, my ball flight is pretty straight...no draw or fade. So, I'd be weary of saying, if you "slice" the ball the blades are going to be more punishing because if you top the crap out of it or heel it due to the same issue I have, any club is going to suck. I didn't have the money to "get fitted", so I just tried to make the best decisions I could based on my swing speed and reviews. I bought the MIzuno JPX 919 Forged, and when I don't early extend, they feel amazing, but when I do early extend, and heel the ball, I don't think any type of club would make a difference.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому +1

      Can save us both the time of making the video and you watching - he would not hit the Miura's as well! 😆😆😆 Sam got about as much improvement out of those Apex's as anyone could hope for. It depends on what a player needs out of their fitting, for Sam part of the story was getting more distance which he wouldn't get with the Miura's traditional lofts and lower (comparable) ball speed. He also needed the fat/heavy shot forgiveness which again would be unlikely to occur with the Miura's. Not to mention Sam's wife would probably murder him if she found out he was trying out more clubs!! 😆

    I did find that you could get really “hot” shots with game improvement - like a week struck 8i could do 160-165, but you might get one that just comes out hot and goes 175-180

    Great Vid as ever Gents, those two Irons are things of great beauty, (I was beginning to get a bulge in the trouser dept)!!!! At the start of the vid I was anticipating that the story line was going to be that the Miura Blade gave up distance and was less forgiving than the Srixon Cavity back, however what a pleasant surprise you had in store for us! I would give up my left hand to be able to play Miura Blades!!!!........ (I wonder if they make one handed clubs)?????

    I was always a fan of mixed sets.....could care less about having a "matching set" blades easier to control and dig from various lies.....Nothing worse than a chunky looking fat wedge from tight lie or the rough. Once you get into the 7 or 6 iron ish range get into the more forgiving profile.....they look chunkier but you get used to it. I think most people never really think about mixing profiles or brands because its not the "norm" Or they use blades in long irons simply bc of an ego thing....so they attempt to hit the 2 or 3 iron "butter knives" rather than something they can really hit (-: but once you convert mixed you won't go back haha (-: I mixed AP2 with AP1 and Miura wedges so get the best of both worlds.... Great video guys!

    This comparison again proves a theme I've noticed with all of these types of comparisons. If the results are different (in this case they weren't) it will be minimal. It certainly would be enough to lower a score. No equipment change can offset bad technique. No matter your skill level find a set of clubs you like and improve your strike by practicing or taking lessons with those clubs. Good video guys. I like the content you provide.

    • @rodneygreenwell7620
      @rodneygreenwell7620 6 років тому

      atomant830
      You say the results were minimal but the desperation was quite significant the blades were realy tight and the cavity back although were ok they were a lot less accurate....
      But that's just my observation

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому +1

      With this comparison certainly that was the case, there are definitely situations where an equipment change and proper fitting would lower a score though. Take all of our fitting videos as an example, but in those case we're generally comparing two clubs that are quite different whereas this comparison was more of an isolated variable test (head design). Thanks for watching!!

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому +1

      Valid point Rodney! Those two irons definitely had performance differences, and likely on the golf course those differences would show up even more.

    • @atomant830
      @atomant830 6 років тому +1

      Rodney, you made a good point. Yes there was some difference in the dispersion between these 2 clubs but the so called harder to hit club had the better dispersion. The cavity back was supposed to be the more forgiving club. Which brings me to my point earlier. If you're a high handicapper and you like the look and feel of a forged blade then go for it and learn to play into them with practice and / or lessons. Good point, observation, and discussion Rodney.
