Your explanation was spot on! Most of us adults have completely forgotten how we learned our mother tongue. Little kids don't have to take grammar lessons in schools before they know how to utter a proper sentence. Grammar and pronunciation taught in schools reinforce their understanding of their language. I remember when my family lived in Quebec city a French province in Canada for one year, my older daughter around 4 years old at the time didn't know a word of French. All she knew was English. She went to a local school. The teachers told us she initially sat in class quietly but after a few months she suddenly started talking in French! Most online Chinese lessons heavily focus on pinyin and use English to explain grammar and words. Your lesson today asked a very important question; how do Chinese kids learn their language? Do their parents explain Chinese words to their kids in English? In fact, before the invention of pinyin how did Chinese learn their pronunciation? Due to so many dialects spoken in China I assume the use of pinyin is to standardize the pronunciation of Chinese. Nonetheless I suspect Chinese from different regions pronunciate Chinese words slightly differently. That's just like English spoken in the southern part of the US, the east coast of Canada, and the UK as well as Australia, they don't always sound exactly the same. But that's the fun part of human languages. Languages are living and dynamic! To me, pinyin similar to the international phonetic alphabet is a great tool used for describing the sounds of a language but shouldn't be the only tool.
输入真的很重要!我也很高兴我学了拼音。我本来没有学拼音也不在意声调。其实这样事情真的很重要。跟英语一样,首先必须要学习语言的声音,然后才能学好说话而且把你的水平提高一点. Foundation is so important. Language learning is a long journey. But it can get easier as you go on if you have a strong foundation. I only like learning to read words that I am confident 我能听得懂和说话。otherwise what’s the point? I’ll just forget it. Listening is very important. It’s the primary skill. Just like babies learn listening before anything else
I love this episode. As you help us, may I offer a language point? Yes, we say "top-down" but native speakers NEVER say "down-top.". Instead, we say "bottom-up." I know, your logic makes sense but I wanted to give back.
