    The 200m freestyle is the meeting ground of the most events - it matches the 100 freestylers moving up, the 400/80 freestylers moving down and the stroke and IM swimmers moving across. It is the event that defines the strongest swimmer.

    Ariane Titmus has just slashed 0.62 seconds off the womens 200 freestyle world record at the Australian Olympic trials. O'Callaghan also came in under the previous record in second place.

    I think pacing makes the difference, most of these winners come from behind.
    If a swimmer goes out faster and then tries to hold on they tend to be overtaken at the end. Like Titmus tried in the race you spoke about.

      For sure that happens. But there is also plenty of examples of people dominating the race from start to finish. Milak, Dressel, Ledecky are some examples.

    You're a brave man for making a prediction like that. While I'd love it if Summer won (I'm Canadian), I don't think she has the same top-end speed as the other women in the event. At least, not yet.

    Well, like you said, one tiny mistake could cost a victory. It will be interesting to see. For me, I think the differences in swimming styles, specifically breathing patterns can make a huge difference. Summer swims gallop style. Ariarne swims on a 2, 2, 3 pattern. Maybe a topic for discussion on one of your videos. For sure, if you go into oxygen debt in a race, you never catch up.

    not sure I agree with the O'Callaghan getting third prediction, she has a lot of momentum and confidence, she's been doing roughly 1 second PB's every year the past few years and whilst I don't think she'll have quite as big a drop this year, I still think she'll drop time considering her injury a few weeks before Fukuoka and in her most recent meets she's been swimming faster than she was at similar meets prior to breaking the WR, I also just don't think McIntosh swims it in Paris due to the schedule, and the last time O'Callaghan lost to Titmus was 2022 Commonwealth games

      I can very much subscribe to the team momentum/psychological boosts that go with it but it's not something that I would care to hinge my entire outcome upon. Of the big 4 of these events, MOC & Titmus (barring health issues) will take the 2 AUS spots and Haughey is a done deal for HKG. However, I'm not fully sold that McIntosh will swim this even if I think she has legitimate medal chances (any colour). Why ? She has medal prospects in 400IM, 400FR, 200FR, 200FLY, 200IM, 800FR and she is likely to be co-opted into both freestyle relays for finals. It's just not viable for her to swim ALL of these individual events so it will get down to which events offer best "returns on investment", particularly where it may involve multiple swims in the one session. She is the clear favourite in 400IM, arguable favourite 200FLY; very real gold contender in 400FR & 200IM whereas she's on a lower tier for 200FR/800FR. Therefore its a very real prospect that she may drop the 200FR .... this time around.

  • @neoxsupreme
    @neoxsupreme 7 місяців тому +1

    I watched the Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials and the commentators/experts said that McIntosh may opt out of the 200m freestyle to reserve herself for her stronger events and because the field of the 200m freestyle is so stacked. Although McIntosh is such an exceptional all-around swimmer and would likely perform well in all events she qualifies for, she must debate which events give her the best chance to finish with GOLD. I hope they're wrong as I have tickets for the day session on July 28th and as a Canadian fan would love to see McIntosh swim in the 200m Freestyle Heats.

    Had to watch this again. One comment about always keeping one hand in front with freestyle. I am not so sure about that, mostly because of the gallop style that is so popular. Summer does swim gallop style. The Effortless Swimming guy was breaking down some one's freestyle who was swimming gallop style. He commented that the one hand was close enough to be considered to be in the front quadrant. That is one 'trick' part of gallop style with the uneven cadence. The non breathing arm is at mid point when the top side arm enters the water, which to me is 'close, but no cigar'. As yet, no one has truly explained all that goes on with the gallop style and why it seems to be better than a more standard freestyle, which Ariarne swims. I am guessing that power is only one part of that....Summer swims gallop style, and so does Katie.

    Titmus will win the 400, that's my prediction and O'Callaghan or Titmus (in that order) will win the 200... I understand the theory of the "winner effect" but for this type of athletes, that's not enough to make them lose focus... two examples of these are Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, the level of training and commitment these guys have made them legends. The other factor I'm considering for my prediction is the coach, Dean Boxall is probably now the best swimming coach in the world, he made Titmus what it is and help her to overshadow Ledecky to the point that she stepped down these events because she knew she wasn't going to win them again. Dean is now Mollie O'Callaghan coach too and he's helping Mollie to achieve these levels of swimming... Mollie and Ariarne train together and compete against each other all the time giving them an edge over all other swimmers. That's my prediction, see you at the Olympics.
