Why Your TRX450R/ER or CRF Won't Start

  • This video I go into depth of why your CRF/TRX may not be starting. These bikes use Valves that are meant to be shimmed and they their valves seats are notorious for wearing out and making the Stem of the Valve sit up a lot higher then it's supposed to and in turn that will make the Valve hang open a tad bit. My suggestion would be to have the valves Replaced with some Fearra Stainless Steel Valves.

    Super helpful video! I reasembled the top end after doing new rings and valve steam seals (bike was smoking like a two-stroke) and it would not start and was shooting air out of the carb! after watching this I figured out I had mixed up the exhaust and intake shims . Thanks so much!

    A lot of people also do not realize that these are high performance racing machines that need to be kept up on meticulously. Even with perfect maintenance they are not gonna last hundreds of hours. You might get 100-150 on the bottom end if you’re lucky and like 80 on the high side on a top end.

      True kinda but also not true. For sure these are not anything like the 400EX and 300EX and 250EX and so on where those can basically have sand in the oil and still run for 20 years lol.
      I have hundreds of hours on my bottom end that I rebuilt about roughly 4 years ago and I'm always floored and bouncing RPM's off the limiter 70% of the time that I ride and so far still good; although I HAVE went though a Couple sets of valves they will eat valves over a long period of time. Other why's as long as you keep up on the oil Changes Running good quality oil (or thicker oil in hotter climate like I do) I run and always have ran Rotella 15W-40 and change the oil after ery 10 to 20 hours of riding, manly that's keeping an eye on what your oil Filter looks like to ensure no metal in it. Sooner you see oil the quicker you can catch the problem before it becomes a much more bigger and expensive problem you're gonna be good for a long time.

      Nothing t do with Honda. Yamaha and Suzuki same thing. They're just high revving motors they turn from 9000 to 120000RPMS things wear out faster then say an old air cooled 400ex and 300ex and 350 raptors and 700 raptos etc. Those bikes inly rev to about 700 to 8500 rpms. Plus if you think about it they really wouldn't be making much money anyways because 90% of the time when a valve job is due people go with Ferrea, Kibble Whites, Del West stainless steel etc.

    I have owned 2 trx 450er’s one 2007 and a 2008. Both I did a top end everything perfect on it. Re seated and sealed the valves not worn out and sharp like the ones you showed. The valve lashes in spec and so is timing. Only does 30psi on compression check but sounds like it wants to start and never does. Does not start pull starting either I’m tired of these quads I can’t figure out why they don’t start. I don’t know what to do now.

      when you do a compression test on these bikes, they're always going to show low compression because of the decompressor is always letting some air out at TDC stroke.

      didickcheeseburger I love the username lol. As for the valves... It is perfectly OK to replace them with steel valves matter if fact I wouod recomend going stainless steel. there's a brand out there called bronco that's actually very good too. One of best is Ferrea Stainless Steel Valves though, it is a very good and most commmon brand Valves to use in the TRX450R/ER Ferrea valves they actually give a small boost in performance due to the way the "bell" of the valve is shaped.

    How would you adjust the decompression litter ? I’m having a problem with my trx 450er. Keep misfiring doesn’t want to start. New piston,cylinder,crank,cdi,stator,carb & etc. I’ve replaced pretty much everything and still doesn’t want to start. It keep’s misfiring. Do you have any idea what could be the problem?

    • @trxtech3010
      @trxtech3010  Рік тому

      Does it back fire as it's cranking and wont start? Sounds like a Metallic Clunk? If so As wierd as it sounds it's a bad Stator (Not starter I am talking about the "Alternator") which is really common on the 06 and newer. A lot of people think it's the decompression lifter or the starters reduction gear/one way Bearing... However its the stator (alternator) What happens is when they go bad they stop producing the proper voltage to the CDI box as cranking speed and it makes the CDI "Confused" and makes it fire spark slightly to early and causes it to advance or retard the ignition timing. The CDI box is a Programmed computer and with out proper voltage it will do that.
      I am putting my money on the Stator "Alternator" is bad. They act up especially when warm, but when cold they will fire up relatively easily. When hot they back fire then makes a loud clunk, shoots flames out the exhaust when cranking, it will run "rich" due to the weak spark.

    Great video just one question. If I was to replace intake valves on mine because my shims are calling for 1.10mm what size shims do you put in with brand new valves ? It’s a 2012 TRX450r

    • @trxtech3010
      @trxtech3010  3 роки тому +2

      Good question, so usually what you do from there is do what's called a "Blind Install", so when you get the new seats cut and new valves installed you have to install a relatively large shim (I usually start with a 2.00mm shim) and assemble the cam tower on TDC torque it down and measure my clearence. Example: (Say when you installed that 2.00mm Shim and you have no gap and cannot fit any feeler guage in there now try go to a 1.80mm or a 1.85mm) now say you have a .003" Gap with the 1.80mm Shim, now using a feeler guage then you need measure how large that gap is... Lets say you have a .003" gap now... Well now you need .003" more of a gap to equal .006" clearance, so that means you need a to go down to a 1.70mm shim. Sounds confusing but once you get the hang of it you can do it with out even thinking to hard on it just using feeler guages to measure the clearence and a verneer caliper to measure the shims if they're unmarked, and of course some reverse math involved. Basically just rememeber Shim size gives you the rocker to cam clearence, and on the intake valves the shims give you the Bucket to cam shaft clearence. I hope that makes sense! Maybe sometime I can do a video on that too.

    • @longlivejoey2337
      @longlivejoey2337 3 роки тому

      Would be a good video and it makes perfect sense there’s basically no factory size it’s just based on how the valve seats. But thanks a lot I was going to try and shave down the shin but I’ll just go ahead and replace the intake valves

    • @trxtech3010
      @trxtech3010  3 роки тому

      @@longlivejoey2337 Exactly. Also, shaving down shims is okay, but any smaller then a 1.20mm can cause the shim to shatter and drop a valve. I have seen that a couple of times.
