  • Sitiveni Ravuka, also known as Rambo, has been confirmed as Fiji's newest Prime Minister, his second time in office. He's taken over from the former junta leader, Frank Bainimarama, who was in power for 16 years. It ends 10 days of uncertainty after last week's election produced no clear result.

Fiji can only be truly democratic if we can keep going to an election every 4 years. The more elections we have, the more this country will develop. Fiji doesn't need any more coups or civil unrest. This will set our economy and everyone's development 30 years back. Let's pray that we can keep voting every 4 years and keep those changes coming in as per democratic rights.

Great for change but coalition won't last. The easiest way to say it is that nfp was rejected by about 90% of Fiji and sodelpa almost 95%. Their voters chose them not Bainimarama or Rabuka. By forming a coalition it's a slap on their voters. Almost 40 % chose Rabuka and close to 50% choose Bainimarama outright. That shows that Bainimarama is most liked by about half the nation and it took a coalition to overpower Fiji First. It seems it will be a struggle for this new government to maintain its position so watch this space. Change is part of democracy, May the nation and the people keep winning.

The question is, is it a change to move us forward or a change to set us back just because we wanted the previous government out? Will they develop Fiji as a nation or only focus on development in the interests of the indigenous? Are they focused on continuing to develop Fiji as a whole or reverse it to spite it's opposition at the cost of the people? Three different parties with very different agendas each with old, washed up members still clinging to a primitive approach. I'd rather more notable candidates of smaller parties with actual worth take up the helm but unfortunately, the reality is their minority puts them at an unfair disadvantage. Can three really work in unison or will they resort to stabbing each other in the back? Change can be good but at what cost?

It used to be that way with the race based voting system left by the british but after election reforms by the former government it is much more fluid. Fiji First party has splintered the Indian voter base from traditional Indian parties fiji labour party and national federation party, Fijian nationalist have splintered between PAP and Sodelpa but there non natives that wanted change if only to get away from rampant corruption of Fiji First that has been in power for 16 years.

Let's no longer operate on this mentality of 'otherness' and victimhood. If we stop seeing each other as villains and seeing ourselves as victims, that will be a great first step to creating a truly sustainable democratic and racially harmonious country, that grows together and progresses forward together organically.
