    We just got our copy yesterday and played it today. In our first game, we discovered that Marquis with Royal Galley is a fantastic combo. .You play Royal Galley, which lets you play Marquis. You can get great draw from Marquis for that turn, but then you get to play it again at the start of your next turn. So as a result, you start your turn with 10 cards in hand, which is fantastic. In one turn, my wife had a Highwayman in play also, which is another duration card that gives you three cards at the start of your next turn. So she was able to start that turn with 13 cards in hand. It was bonkers, but a lot of fun.

    Swap seems ridiculously powerful. Trading out an action from your hand that may not be any use for any other action that costs 5 or less on the board, and then getting to play it is good. Being action/card neutral (it draws a card and provides an action) makes it a great addition to any engine, albeit one you probably only want one or two of. Of note is that swap itself costs 5. I envision some hilarious combo that involves Swapping Rats into Swaps. I'm sure there's a payoff that doesn't involve the tokens from Adventures. Like the action card that gives a favor for each card gained. I think Dark Ages is my favorite expansion, as I prefer a scrappier game with lots of meanness going on. Really the only attack card I have issues with is Possession since it targets one player, adds a ton of time to the game, is easily broken via stuff like Throne Room and doesn't really have a counter outside of something like Moat.

  • @enfynet
    @enfynet 2 роки тому

    I've had this expansion for a little over a week, and I've played about half a dozen games already. My biggest takeaway so far is that Broker is stupid broken because it gives way too much flexibility in what it can do, especially when combined with some of the allies that are available. It catapults players toward the endgame faster than almost anything I've ever seen before in Dominion.

    Yeah I bet you hate barbarian for another reason, it can potentially trash your opponents provinces. And then you get a lower cost victory in its place, whatever that might be. Personally I love barbarian! I love the thrill of seeing will someone lose a province to it even if it’s me. The possibility is so low, but still will it happen this game. Plus this expansion has so many attack cards, only dark ages has more attack cards than allies does. Not only that but this expansion has no reactions. So I’m pleasantly surprised you would pick this expansion as one of your favorites. Unless your sudo random game kicks out all attack cards too, good luck with in this expansion since most of the split piles also have attack cards. And don’t forget this expansion has the most dangerous card. Lich if you play it you lose your next turn! If you somehow end up playing it twice you lose your next 2 turns! Ouch! Very dangerous!

    I get the rest of the excitement, but aren't favors like potions?
    Meaning, you either get a bunch of favor-related cards or preferably be totally without them.
    But there are not many, so playing with allies reduces the potential variety in the game, which is the strength of Dominion.

    • @jaron9978
      @jaron9978 2 роки тому +2

      I don’t think that’s the case at all actually considering every game that has a card that gains favors starts with an ally card, i.e., a direct way to use that favor. Potions rely on way more luck with your hand draws. This actually addresses the problem of potions and should make for some really fun games. And ALL THOSE CHOICES! Talk about increasing variety potential in games!

    • @rarn21
      @rarn21 2 роки тому +1

      There are many problems with Alchemy. Potion cost cards mostly work just fine on the actually good cards even if they are the only potion card. Alchemist, Familiar, Scrying Pool, possession, golem, work fine as the only potion card.
      They are bad because they are swingy (easy to miss hitting a Familiar price point and just get crushed), annoying to play with (Scrying Pool, possession), or just plain bad cards (herbalist), etc. And the potion card itself just feels bad to draw when you don't want it.
      Liaison cards work just fine on their own. Obviously there will be boards where you might ignore it completely, but that's true of almost all cards anyways. You don't have to stick a nuisance potion in your deck and hope it lines up otherwise it is a dead card. Liaisons usually have some use even if you are not triggering the ally yet and you can save up their favors to trigger them exactly when you want. You aren't at the mercy of the draw. It might even be more interesting at times to only have a single Liaison because it makes the gaining and spending of a favor a more meaningful choice rather than something you do every turn rotely.

    • @nshaw1299
      @nshaw1299 2 роки тому

      @@jaron9978 @rarn2
      I get the imprpvement from Alchemy, but not sold on its measure. But get it can be a vast improvement to potions.
      If to use allies, you need to buy and then use favor-providing cards, then you need *enough* favor-providing cards available so that you'll get to use favors enough during the course of the game.
      And this is the main difference - instead of a single 'currency providing' card (the potion itself) there are multiple, and the currency providing action is embedded in their actions and not the only thing they do.
      BUT now 2 things occur:
      There is a question 'how many compositions of such cards are needed to enjoy the ally cards? a single favor-providing card deck in the game is enough?'
      And, especially if no single card is ever enough and surely if you need like '3 cards to fully enjoy the ally cards', those limited number of compositions detract from the 10 cards you choose randomally, meaning less variety imposed on the game, to enjoy the different-kind-of-variety of ally cards.
      I suppose it might be possible for any single favor-providing card to be enough to enjoy ally cards, but it wasn't mentioned and had that been the only attraction in this expansion, it would feel like a gamble to buy and check out. luckily I guess, it's not.

    • @jaron9978
      @jaron9978 2 роки тому +1

      @@nshaw1299 I think the question of how many liaisons to use would come down to personal preference and strategy based on the ally card you use. And don’t forget you could just buy multiple of the same liaison for your deck. Activating the ally ability a few times per game at the most opportune times might be enough to gain an advantage over someone not using them. Just my thought from looking at the different cards.

    • @nshaw1299
      @nshaw1299 2 роки тому

      @@jaron9978
      yeah... I guess time will tell on that one.
      The empirical test being 'When randomizing to choose your 10 cards and getting a liaison card, how often will you prefer not to play with it, or say, wait, if this is in play, i also need this and that', the latter option decreases variety of the 10 cards which is my concern.

    Are they still releasing Dominion expansions? That game was over-expanded within 2 to 4 years of it's original release. It's incomprehensible to me that they're still releasing full-on expansions to it.
    If I was in charge of the brand I'd re-release the original game with a few changes and a couple of pared-down expansions in the box. Otherwise the game is "Here's a solid based game, and then too many expansions for you to ever actually incorporate into it, even if you only get, say, 3. Also, we clearly never thought about how they'd co-exist, because they mostly don't. Just buy the base game and one expansion and hope it's a good one". It's insane. Like Carcasonne.

      Since it’s a card game i think it can have a lot of expansion more than 2 more is probably too much, if it was a already in depth big war or euro game, I’d agree at some point.

      @samelder2130 2 роки тому +1

      There was a re-release of the original game a few years back; not sure if you've heard of Dominion 2E. There's also a ton of thought given into all the interactions given how many people play full random. Not sure where you're getting the impression that they don't co-exist.

    • @rarn21
      @rarn21 2 роки тому +5

      Carcassonne does have the problem you described, but dominion doesn't. Only 10 cards go out per game and any random 10, even from 10 different expansions, all work fine together. In Carcassonne, if you add too many expansions you have added a ton of tiles which eventually makes the game exhaustingly long and makes pieces from within an expansion harder to find. With dominion, it is always 10 cards.
      The reason they keep making them is because people keep buying them, which is because they indeed do all integrate quite easily together and "coexist" 😄.

    • @someguy4262
      @someguy4262 2 роки тому

      @@rarn21 I disagree. It mostly *functions* with whatever random cards, but it doesn't work *well*. There are too many highly-specific mechanics that only show up on cards from a specific set where you mostly only see 1 or 2 (if you're lucky) from a set in a completely random game for it to be cohesive. This hiiiiighly devalues or over-values those cards in said games.
      I spent several thousand games playing the unofficial, but dev-endorsed (before the publishers scuppered it) version of this game online 10-ish years ago, and the more expansions you allowed, the wonkier the game was. Super consistently. Certain expansions work better as a random inclusion, but some are complete nonsense when you get only 1 or 2 specific cards in a game.
      Even with the new free Steam Dominion that only allows one or two free expansions per X amount of time, often those expansions don't add much of anything, or are just wasted card slots, when they're added to the base set and randomly chosen from.
