For anyone wondering about the constant ps2 pick, Mario really only has one stage he cant do that on, FD. So Mario players will basically always ban it, and if you have 2 bans normally i would guess you ban Kalos, so that leaves you with what? Small Battlefield, Ps2 but an even lower blastzone, battlefield has triple platforms so that isnt even an option, maybe smashville/HB but then its easier for mario to get in. If it were me i would go town and city, but i mean im not a top player so what do i know.
Small Battlefield actually has the same top blastzone height as PS2, but it's smaller so Mario has an easier time getting in, plus the platforms are slightly lower and cover more of the stage, so I'd imagine it would actually make it easier for Mario to reset onto them. Smashville is even worse (especially for a character like Cloud), since not only does Mario get in easier, but he can also combo into fair offstage much easier due to the small stage size This tournament's ruleset had 3 bans, so I'd imagine Kurama would usually just ban FD/Town/Kalos, leaving PS2 as the best option in a lot of cases. There are 2 times when kurama “parry’s ” sparrow cross slash when it’s actually a spot dodge. I think that’s cool because it seems like a more consistent punish option

He kind of struggles to get in on cloud and the neutral feels weak and linear w/ few options. On the other hand, cloud feels super consistently strong the entire game just smooth sailing. He doesn't really need to get in on Mario because his defense is so strong with the walls of aerials and mixing in dash attack/tomahawk grab or grounded attack. I'm also not sure that Kurama went off stage once to edge guard cloud, either. He just tried fire ball, and I'm not sure it ever worked. He needed to base his edge guard off of baiting Spargo to do an option that he could punish vs generic fireball edge guard each time. But in a general sense this is why the "weakness" of poor recovery isn't really a weakness for cloud/Spargo. He doesn't really get edge guarded. It takes a really good player to edge guard well because it's really based on baiting your opponent and reads. There's no win button for edge guards usually. So since Spargo just outclasses his opponents he always recovers back to stage. And you could argue maybe Mario isn't the best at off-stage edge guarding vs cloud, and I'd say that's a pretty good argument that Mario loses this matchup. Cloud is a good character lol. But the Mario player can still do it if he outplays the cloud. Whereas Mario players have to depend on excelling at their combos, Cloud players have to excel at defense and recovering. But if you keep up the game plan you will eventually win, whereas for Mario if you don't get a combo you never get anything going. Plus some of Kurama's combos that killed I've never seen someone get like that it feels almost like he's the best Mario at the kill combos yet he still loses to cloud. I feel like that argues to a fundamental difference in the superiority of the options at the characters' disposal. They both have spent a lot of time mastering their characters, but man cloud just feels so solid.
