I took the empire builder (with my parents) and southwest chief (solo) last year, both times in my own roomette. It was so much fun! And the food in the dining car was SO GOOD. And for those who think it's expensive, all meals are included and cooked to order for sleeper car passengers, not heat and serve like for the coach passengers, as well as access to showers. And there's a room attendant in your car who will make up and tear down your bed every day. Both trips my attendants were awesome!
I did the Starlight Express from Klamath Falls to LA. I had a 3 yo at the time. They had a play car for the kids! LA train station was gorgeous! Train travel is so underrated. It's better than taking a cruise in many eays. You get to relax and watch the world go by at a slower pace. But you see so much. Instead of ocean, You go through towns and see people going about daily life and beautiful scenic views. You see the countryside you often don't get to see from the road.
The only way to combat that is to get your own large family size room that comes with its own private bathroom-and-shower located on the top level of the sleeping car. That way, you and your traveling companions will be the only people using it/them, and it comes cleaned before you get on the train because that and all other sleeping car rooms and rommettes come reserved!
Considering that all of your meals are included and there is a shower available for overnight passengers, I would say it is not overpriced. Whether or not your train ride is perfect, it is definitely worth the money (which is still a cheaper price than flying, I might add).
I wish more ppl realized that the train ride IS the trip like you do. The delays don’t bother you too badly if you’re prepared.❤
Yessss exactly
Yes. The train ride IS the vacation. Bring a book or two, a puzzle book, some music, and snacks!
Agreeeed
And laptop, phone
I see

I am doing the Empire Builder in May from Portland to Chicago, my first solo cross country Amtrak trip. I plan on doing the Zephyr next year.
Nice!! Enjoy
I’d love to visit the us and take some rides on Amtrak
I recommend it!
Looks like fun to me! An adventure!
Alright I will!
In the winter, it will be dark outside for much more of the ride.
I travel by train to cruise. The train trip is part of my vacation 😅
Haha I love that!
how many days? did u fly to get on the train?
3 days (52 hours) and no I left from Chicago
Forgot to mention trying to get a top room.
Hmmm no I didn't, that's not something I look out for personally
I tried liking this up on Amtrak couldn’t find the schedule at all.

Hello were.the.tracks rough in Nebraska...im.taking my first trip.in jan..but worried I'll get motion sickness.with rough ride.
I don't get motion sickness so I was fine and can't really speak to it!
The bathrooms smell, they need new trains
True but bathrooms would smell on new trains because it's about the people lol

Pretty sure it's not worth the money it's wayyyyyy overpriced no matter how scenic it is
Pretty sure what's worth the money to you may be different from what's worth the money to me! Gotta love personal preferences 😊

That very nice❤
