    During Japan's Occupation of Korea(1901-1945), Korean arts like Taekkyeon were banned. So, a lot of Koreans had to learn arts like Shotokan and other styles of Karate which were brought back as Tang Soo Do, and the later divergent Taekwondo. That's how you got the Pyung Ahn series of forms. Pyung Ahn is just Pinan in Korean. "Naebojim" is really Naihanchin or Tekki. "Bal-Sek" is Bassai or Passai. If you remember in the original Karate Kid series, Miyagi-sensei mention "my ancestor, go fishing, have too much Sake, end up in China". And it's not just a movie story - Uechi Ryu, Goju Ryu, and to a lesser degree, my first style Shorin Ryu all refer back to China. Many Okinawans originally called Karate " To De" meaning "Tang (China) Hand. Funakoshi re-arranged and renamed Karate to make it famous for mainland Japan, who was fighting with China at the time(almost any karate historian, from the more youtube-friend Jesse Enkamp to the more solidly academic Patrick McCarthy, can confirm this). Tang Soo Do refers back to the Tang Hand. The REAL founders of Tang Soo Do included Won Kuk Lee, Hwang Kee, and Chun Sang Sup who studied under Funakoshi-sensei, Yoon Byung-In who studied under Shudokan founder Toyama Kanken, and Ro Byung Jik who studied Shotokan as well (can't find his teacher.) if you look at Dae Un's fighting style, it has kicks the flow into locks and throws which may suggest a Hapkido influence. Hapkido, again, is a collaborative effort that included the mix of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu Choi Yong Sool learned from Takeda Sokaku with traditional Taekkyeon.

    • @ainako255
      @ainako255 2 роки тому +2

      @@junjun_8070 most sources cite Funakoshi,along with other masters like Kenwa Mabuni and others. that's why almost every other Karate style that either came from Okinawa or their founders went back to learn from Okinawa through the Shuri and Tomari lineage has the old names including there forms Pinan, Naihanchin, Passai, Kusanku, Wanshu, Seisan, etc - while it's mostly Shotokan Funakoshi's (granted there are others lineage where you get names of both the art and the forms both renamed and more (not gonna go into that in-depth, just sufficed to say funakoshi re-ordered them to fit the level of importance for Shotokan style. you can usually look up the Pinan series from almost,all of the other styles and people will automatically cry "It's in the wrong order Q.Q). So, Pinan became Heian, Naihanchin became Tekki, Passai became Bassai, Kusanku got knocked down to Kanku, Wanshu became Enpi, and Seisan became Hangetsu. And again, he and other masters had to move towards more Japanese sounding names to help it grow on the mainland.

    • @ainako255
      @ainako255 2 роки тому +4

      @@squidwardtortellini4491 probably none of the real life Tang Soo Do lineages aren't that flat out...for lack of a better phrase, outright dickish. if there WAS a Korean master known for having more of a "rough edge" to his training, it was Choi Bae Dal - better known as Oyama Masutatsu, founder of Kyokushin. But Kyokushin's rough edge is more aggression on how to push forward despite obstacles than to outright make someone's life miserable. Other masters like Motobu Choki and William K.S Chow were both reportedly known for picking fights to test their skills in the street and being tough on their students, but neither of their arts were made with the mindset of actively bullying and showing no mercy if not threatened and endangered first.

      Tang/Dang soo do is the foundation of their style. As in the Tang Dynasty where karate’s Chinese roots are. The magazine which is written in ridiculously simple Japanese doesn’t say that though - it clearly says Tensoodo. This seems to represent the sound of 댄스도 from Korean, “the way of dancing” which goes well with the aikidō picture and the hot Korean Australian actress’s kokyū nage breath throw . . .

    I’d love to hear your perspective on the Cobra Kai methodology. Kreese and Silver were taught their style in order to survive in a war. Do you think that’s a bad thing? And now Kreese is in prison, able to defend himself even as an old man (I know it is far-fetched, but the entire show is haha). In life or death situations, is Cobra Kai truly bad? When I watch this show, I find myself siding with their martial arts approach because they needed it, and they want to pass that knowledge on. Yes of course kids should not learn it, but… as long as it’s not used for bullying, I find it to be practical to help you survive if needed. I know the whole thing is silly, but I’d still love to hear your comments on that as a modern martial arts practitioner from Japan. Thanks! Keep up the great work on your videos.

    It's pretty interesting how "karate" has become an umbrella term for various Asian martial arts. In the US there are a fair amount of schools that are called "karate dojos" but the curriculum has nothing to do with Japanese/Okinawan karate. Instead, they focus more on martial acrobatics and "modern forms". I'm not sure who's influence lead this all to happen, but I think it's pretty weird it all ended up like this.

    I think the "magazine" was intended to have some fun "Easter Eggs" rather than be a realistic (fake) magazine: The origins of Teng Su Do (I am spelling that wrong) and "the fun egg game" are references to this season. While I get your perspective they probably needed another native speaker to give it a once-over, as compared to the typical Western show, it shows at least some effort. (The average Western show, if they need a fictional Japanese magazine cover, will either have something an intern ran through Google translate, or, even worse, English words printed using a "fortune cookie" font (a font for English letters that looks "Asian"). (And TBF, English writing I've seen on some anime has much the same problem unless the localization team was very on the ball.)
