  • A white water packrafting session with my Alpacka Gnarwhal in early spring to catch high water on the Middle Madawaska River in Ontario. Levels were about 3.15m (75cms) and climbing. The instructions are my good friends from Paddlers Co-op, Ryan and Lynda. I highly recommend contacting Paddler Co-op if you would like to learn white water and advanced paddling skills.

I didn't know you lived out this way before! The guy in the blue packraft is Ryan, I met him almost 10 years ago at paddlers coop when I showed up to start lessons as well. Now they are my good friends. Best place to get trained for sure.

@@Suluk46 Lived in the Ottawa Valley most of my life and spent a ton of time on the Ottawa, Mad, and Gatineau Rivers! I'm really excited to see your NWT trip!

The river was very, very high compared to the roughly 40 times I've been on it. It has the effect of washing out a bunch of the ledges and rocks although those waves were packing some real punch. Try it again sometime in lower water conditions so you can see the difference, experience the ledges (especially on Staircase) and the shallow water rocks of Gravel Pit. I think MKC trains at a typical flow of 30cms with highs up to 80 cms. There is a river gauge you can find through their website that should also have a history option to find out what the flow rate was on the day you were out there for this video.
    Nicely done. Be careful.

This was my first time on the middle mad, Ryan was helping me get ready for some of the big water I was going to see on my summer arctic trip. I have run it a few times since this time, but always at high water around the 75-ish mark, which is about where it was in this video. I am tentatively planning to head down next week for a few laps, but probably with the kayak as opposed to the packraft. You may know more than me, but I think this section of river is actually more challenging at lower water levels.
