Oh this fixed my problem! I was having the smallest of leaks into the overflow tube. Adjusted the float and this fixed it! Thank you!!

Great video. What is the metal screw beside the adjusting screw? Seems to set the lower level of the float? Where should that be set? Thanks again.
Great question. The metal screw adjust for how far down the lever can go. Usually the ball float would lift before it becomes necessary but if there was no water in the tank (for example) the screw would stop the arm from dropping farther.
As helpful as your video was, my issue turned out to be the screw to adjust the ball was at fault. So far i didnt see any video covering this aspect but here what learn.
My adjustment screw looked like there was alot to be able to screw in but couldnt, what i end up doing was removing the screw completely (luckily nothing gets disassemble if you do) then push and hold the floating ball downwards with one hand and screw the adjustment screw in. The screw should be able to go all the way in and now the ball can be properly adjusted with the adjustment screw.
Appreciate your comment and sorry I wasn't able to address your need specifically. Sounds like with some creative solving you were able to make it work. I have even heard of people bending the float bar to further adjust their water level. Whatever works, I guess! Cheers

My toilet started acting up out of the blue and I noticed the holding tank water level was very high and leaking into the overflow pipe. I have turned every screw every which way and nothing is working. I'm ready to throw this piece of shit out the window I am so frustrated. It was just fine and then boom, running non stop
First question: is it ballcock fill valve (like mine in the video) or something else? Also, if you try to pull up the float (ball style or a newer universal style), does it actually stop? If it doesn’t, then replacing the fill valve would be advisable. Regardless, if you keep having trouble, it might be advisable and faster to replace the valve.
When I turn the limit screw at the level I’d like the water to be, it stops the sound. So we’re good there. But then when I flush the toilet, the water doesn’t fill back up unless I loosen the screw… help!!
I think I broke the plastic adjustment screw. It was very, very hard to move. I used a screwdriver, and now it doesn't seem to make any difference where I wind the screw, it doesn't change the water level in the tank.
Many screws are plastic so it wouldn't surprise me if it broke. I would recommend just replacing the fill valve as it's only ~$20 and then you don't have to fuss with it.
I should have consulted UA-cam University first. I tried unscrewing the ball out first then the metal screw on the fill valve. I'm not that sure what the metal screw does, maybe controls the rate of refill? I had the smallest leak and measured one day. About 26 gallons a day.

I think the metal screw adjusts how far the float drops when the toilet is flushed.
@@everready19373 Yes turn the screw clockwise to lower the water level in the tank and CCW to raise it. Before I saw this video I was unscrewing the actual ball to try to lower the level. Right idea but wrong plan. My tank level was just barely too high with a little water going into the overflow tube. Wasn't enough to hear water runnning, I just saw the water just barely shimmering in the bowl. I put it off thinking it couldn't be that much until I decided to see how much it was actually wasting. I did a meter reading before bed and made sure I didn't use any water for 12 hours and came up with the 26 gallons which is about what I use for my daily use, which I think is quite high in itself. Anyway I live in a desert so every drop counts.
Not matter the adjustment, my water always fill to the overflow tube. When I try to lower the water level, it just fills very slowly, and still goes above the floater to the overflow tube. Any idea what causes this?
Are you adjusting the correct thing? What does your fill valve look like?
@@learnsavediy i have the exact same as in your video. Turns out the water level is fine, the floater makes the filling stop at right level, but the fill valve keeps leaking slowly afterward

If it doesn't have a screw on it, it like has a piece that ratchets up and down on the fill valve like I mention in the video. If you want you find the one you have on google and link it here and we can try figuring it out together.
How exactly the water fills the tank and the bowl during refill phase?
Once the flapper falls back down after the handle has been pushed a seal is created to allow the tank to fill. The fill valve brings in water from the supply line and deposits water at the base of the fill valve (water in the tank) as well as out the fill tube to the overflow tube (water into the bowl). The water stops once the float rises to the prespecified level.
Quick question: I’d like to raise my water level because it’s very low, but if I screw the adjuster any higher then the water just continuously pours into the overflow tube. How can I adjust the water level without causing the water to continuously pour into the overflow tube?
Because the problem didn't exist before you started, I would assume you possibly turned the adjuster too high. To verify, try lifting the float manually when the water starts to continuously overflow and see if that stops the issue. If it does, you need to adjust the water level lower. Is the water level low in your tank or your bowl?
@@learnsavediy yeah the issue was that the water level was low in the bowel but I couldn’t raise it enough with the adjuster. I found the issue though. The hose that fills my bowel was clogged.
To lower the water do I need to turn the screw left first then flush.
Yes turn it left/counter clockwise to lower the level.

What do I do if my adjustment screw doesn’t screw anymore but still sounds like water if flowing, almost as if the thread doesn’t grab
Where is the water still flowing from? The bowl or the tube in the tank? If the bowl is still getting water, the flapper might not be making a tight seal.
I don’t have that screw. Any other options?

When you say "turn the screw back" what do you mean? Are you meaning that you have the same problem I did? The water is too high/continually running and turning the screw doesn't change anything?

Check the tube that goes into the fill flush valve. It may not be spraying all the water into there or may have leak/low pressure.
How much would a plumber charge for the service?
Great question! I have no idea but I know many charge $50-75 around me just for a basic service call for a toilet.

How do you know for sure where is the water line
Some tanks have a water line on either the tank or the overflow tube/pipe. If it’s not on either, sometimes you can tell by the staining on the tank. If none of these are present, you may have to play around with the level to ensure adequate water to flush solids. I hope this helps!
I adjusted mine. Just few small turns it raises the water in toilet . But it keeps running untill i turn it back into exact spot it was before . The screw . Any ideas?
Good question. Hard to say without seeing it but maybe you can provide more context. I assume you want to provide more water to your tank so you allow more water into the tank by adjusting the screw but now it doesn't stop filling with water?
Do you have a similar set up or is yours newer?
Also, is the higher water level pouring into the overflow? If so, your water level is too high it will keep running until you readjust the level.
@@learnsavediy I followed the video exactly .And it raised level in toilet a little . But when tank refills it just keeps running yes . I have same setup as video.i turned the screw counterclockwise. just a little . Im just trying add water level of the toilet bowl.

Also, if you manually lift the float when the screw is adjusted, does the water stop?

Water level drops after it's filled 1/4" within an hour
Might be a leak from the flapper. The water should not drop unless you flush it. You can put some food coloring in the tank and if any color comes up in the bowl, your flapper needs to be replaced.
The screw must be stripped. Its still doing the same thing.
Possibly. Fortunately kits to replace the fill valve are readily available and cheap!
Looks like he needs to put some Clorox Bleach in his toilet tank to clean the mineral residue. DO NOT let it stay in the tank for more than 5-10 minutes, as it might corrode the inner mechanisms. I do mine every 6 months or so, as needed.
