Monty Desai (www.pitchvision...) coaches a young batsmen with a drill to help him better watch the ball and pick length. See more at www.pitchvision...
Cricket is all about your instinct and reflexes.A batsmen never has time to think when a ball is bowled at 90 miles per hour.Key to success is how quickly one can judge the length by keeping basics right
If you watch the ball from the hand and pick the length from the hand, u can be ready for the short and have more time to play. Of course, it needs lot of practice to master it so that you subconsciously start picking the ball from the release point within fraction of a second and play.
I think this is very interesting that Indian boys are told at a young age to read the ball from the hand. Hence I think that is why Indian batsmen play spin so well.
Good tips for younger players, really it's about getting them to watch the ball as closely as possible as they lack the concentration at first. Picking the length early is hard to do but ultimately is one of the most important factors of batting to get into a good position so a good video to show people who don't have access to a coach. I remember doing the exact same exercise in the U13's and it helped me a great deal. And for people wondering why their aren't balls going right at his head, children at that level can't bowl bouncers as their bodies don't allow the strength required and a bouncer might reach chest height at most. The child in the video also demonstrates very good defensive technique for his age and milking the ones and twos with defensive shots will make you an age group run machine haha.
This is classic cricket coaching, front foot, bat drive etc... Modern day coaching is all about shot selection...defend only when necessary, at all times look for the rope!
Abd wasn’t born genius mate. All the coach wants the boy is to watch the ball from the bowlers hand, othErwise he wont be able to pick which delivery he is about to ball
The little guy perfectly timed it if you watch it properly. The coach never let the ball out of his hands and so he has the liberty to say "ball abhi chuta nahi, aur tumne movements le li" , but the little boy reacted only when the ball reached the position when it was about to be thrown.
If you want to run....first you need to learn walking ....kal ko chote bacche ko ghutne ke bal chalta dekh ke mat kahna sir ki Mai toh daud bhi Sakta huin
I do regularly like that at the same time I played really well in the last tournament , my coach never said that he just said u should ready for the ball so early Nd focus on the ball ,u have to have a ability to change ur shot according to the length .... including u can leave the ball at the very last moment ....I followed Nd playing well ...
Good work from the boy. He understood well. In match conditions this drill is a bit different. the bowler will always try to bowl the ball. In that case we have very less time. May be useful against spinners but not against the fastest bowlers of the world
I disagree. At 1:04, the kid picked out the line very early by watching the elbow and wrist position and got into a stance so that he could play close to the body and then the coach discouraged him from doing so. Let him use his intuition
No bro,the kid actually committed to the off side as you can see from his front foot going across towards cover region, with that position it is difficult to play straight as bat comes naturally across,i may be wrong but I tried my best
ANGESH KUMAR well noticed. If it was an inswinger and you bring out your front foot towards the offside then the chance of you getting out is very high.
One more thing we can do is take little baby step forward with the bat halfway up and then when the bowler releases the ball check his hand followed by where the ball pitched and then react according to the situation to go forward or backward. This little thing helps in playing an aggressive shot coz with this position batsman generates its body flow.
I'm fairly new to this game, especially batting. Why should the batsman be still if the ball isn't bowled. Is it to ensure that the batsman doesn't have a pre-determined shot in mind?
+Kher exactly, because if you pick the length wrong you're more often than not in an incorrect position to face the delivery - otherwise resulting in you yorking yourself or hitting it up :)
interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover how to improve your cricket game download try Nevolly Crazy Cricket Nerd (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.
Hi. My question was not sarcastic. I actually wanted to know how to react when you are facing fast deliveries. Maybe a video tutorial would be nicer. Thanks! :)
Top flight cricketers facing bowlers at 80+ rarely step right out onto the front foot. They tend to favour the back foot, which gives them a little more time to react.
Batting is all about reading the ball correctly and adjust your shot we have many example of legend batsman who were shuffle before releasing of ball Brian Lara and Ricky pointing are a few example
Sir all cricket players have a certain or particular stance!! and some may move back and across and play!! some may shuffle across the crease.. it doesnt matter . when the ball is hit by the batsman his head has to be still and the feet should move!! thats all.. so that boy played well!! he didnt come early
Merko ni hoti me bhot fast bowlers ko khelta hu ball kabhi low reh jati h kbhi pick ni hoti, room ni bnta , bouncers me to cut ya pull low wali ball pr drive aur jb pick ni hoti to back foot punch maro❤️❤️❤️me maximum 156 kmph kee speed ki ball khela hu ❤️
He just flexed.... You can read a spinner from from his hands but not a fast bowler... Being a quick bowler myself I can confidently say that we are taught how to CAMOUFLAGE a delivery making it look like a good length but bowling full with the whip
My stance is always move across and back, me copied it from jack kallis..I would always shuffle a bit,let it be any length ball,it gives additional reaction time rather than glueing in crease and wait for a 140kmph ball to be released, lol
on the first ball he took a short stride towards the ball to keep himself balance and then when he picked the length he took a comfortable stride to the ball ,he could have gone on the backfoot if it was a backfoot ball because that was a short stride, that is actually a good technique , you told him that is wrong but actually he was doing right
Sir I play better then normal players. Coz I play lot of classic shots nd straight drives. Never went for training nd those who used to bowl me they'll end up coz i give no lbw nd no wickets... I trained myself playing with slim stick. But now I can't play i broke my leg last after the accident my dream was to play for India. I ended up like this. I hope there is someone who is better then me....
I love it how he thinks he knows everything but in the end it's the kids style of play I personally start on leg stump then slide across where he's forcing the kid to play dead straight
I was taught differently.. maybe they teach it differently in set countries... in England I've been taught to get the front foot out, so that you're prepared to drive and then you can quickly shift to the back foot if the ball is short... instead of waiting for the ball to pitch; our neutral position was front foot.. so that if the ball is bowled, we don't have to worry about the front foot and can just go for shot selection... I'm not saying your method is wrong, I'm just wondering that maybe I should change my technique now
Coaching methods for preparation and trigger movements tend to differ. In England and Australia a lot of coaches suggest you move the front foot but be prepared to rock onto the back foot if the ball is short. Others want you to remain neutral without committing. It's really a question of what works best for you. The main thing is to be on the balls of your feet, alert and watching the ball.
and that is how england batsman get plumb lbws and catches at silly points against sub continental spinners. sticking out the front foot isn't wrong but its when you put too much weight on the front foot and are unable to move it qucikly is when you mess up. try and let the ball come to you and practice playing it late.
Front foot as neutral position gives less time to react when ball is being bowled at 90 miles per hour and it doesn't allow batsman to get into play short pitch ball.
Also the pitches u play on make a difference, in England the ball swings and usually u come forward to counter the swing. Australian pitches have more bounce thats where the back and across technique would be more useful
It's theoretical and not practical. Every batsman has an initial trigger movement even the best like Ponting, Dravid, Lara, Virat, Rohit, Chanderpaul, Tendulkar, Viv had trigger movements either on the front or on the backfoot. What's more important is the head position and balance which enables you to have faster reflexes. I was myself not too bad a fist division batsman and had to leave the sport due to family responsibilities and I can talk from my own experiences that head position and balance are more important.
that's called trigger movement and every batter is different it's not like that he came onto the front foot..he just went into a position where he could go both forward and back
But now a days because of variations in pitches one have to judge the length according to pitch because some pitches have low bounce some have high bounce some are slow some are fast.. watching the ball till end is the best remedy to bat on any type of pitch.
Can I take advantage while batting on less bouncy and slow pitches. I used to play on mats, now starting playing on turf. Can't cope with Timmins. Please advise. Bro
Less bouncy and slow pitches are advantage to the bowler. Mat & Turf has different bounce and speed so when you shift from mat to turf you should try to stay on wicket as long as possible and try to understand the pitch and watch the ball till the last movement as I always say and try to play more on Turf pitches and avoid mat because it can affect your game.
apart from picking the length , tell the young boy to push the ball which is pitched up ...i saw he was defending the ones which were there to be driven...By the Way great work and great lesson :)
Fully disagree... batsman has instinct and they react when bowl is about to release some batsman had tendency to come forward and some stays at their position it about the bounce when they actually react in nano seconds... it's just a simple game of watch and hit... more you complicate things then more you failed to score big!!
Mohit Shrivastava I used to play like that but it doesn't work lol. U have to react as soon as it comes out and u have to play it off the pitch not after it's bounced. If that makes sense
Indeed!! you are right mate.. just an addition to above.. offcourse batsman have to smart enough to see the hand release of bowler to pick the speed and length along with some patience to see behaviour of pitch.. if one masters that then little correction in technique would get him success!!
Mohit Shrivastava best piece of advice... I used to think batting was all about technique but you should only focus on that in training, in a match game it should be watch ball play ball and look at gaps in fielding.
In my opinion, you need a batsman mind to play like a batsman. If you are good, you can sense what bowler is going to do just before he release the ball so you don't need to react when its released. If you react after the bowl is released, you will find the faster one on your stumps before you bring the bat down. Its my opinion because I have played a lot of test gully cricket, your may be different
Cricket is all about your instinct and reflexes.A batsmen never has time to think when a ball is bowled at 90 miles per hour.Key to success is how quickly one can judge the length by keeping basics right
Satviiekk Reddy and I think refoex needs training

@Girish Anand He is mostly right. Even ponting thinks the same

Sir at the time of jump no bowler can change anything in the bowl so the best time is to pick the ball when the bowler takes his jump
