  • Abstract alcohol ink tutorial using Ranger colors Teakwood and Stream, and Pinata metallic Brass. I used 91% isopropyl alcohol and 9 inch x 12 inch Grafix opaque white craft plastic. I also use a Revlon brush style hair dryer (on the cool setting) with the brush attachment removed to move the ink.

    When I use the cool setting the hair seems so much stronger than what it appears when you are on cool. The low setting the air moves much slower. How do you control the cool high air flow?

    I find the cool setting on the Revlon dryer blasts out too powerfully and blows the inks everywhere. How did you manage to control the airflow? I heard what you said about how and where you hold the dryer, but it still seems a challenge to me (so I use the low heat setting).

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 роки тому

      Using the low heat setting is no problem as long as you are careful not to warp your paper from the heat. If you haven’t watched it yet, check out video 19. I do a demonstration on controlling the inks it it that might be helpful to you.

    What’s the best paper to work with alcohol inks? Or the best surface?? I’ve used canvas before but i had to prepare the fabric to seal it, with no very good results

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  Рік тому

      There are a few synthetic papers that I really like and each have their own quirks. Grafix opaque white craft plastic or Grafix Dura-lar for the best priced non-staining paper; NARA Synthetic Art Paper for a little more expensive, mostly non-staining paper; Legion brand Yupo for about the same cost as NARA, but stains. The staining is not necessarily a bad thing. I think it adds a depth to painting sometimes. Ranger inks tend to stain the most on it and it changes the color of some of their ink as one of the base colors in it gets pulled out by the yupo. That sounds strange, but you'll see what I mean if you decide to try it lol. Alcohol inks also work great on any smooth, non-porous surface like glass or sealed ceramic. I am sorry it took so long to get back to you. I am just now getting back to my painting and posting videos. I hope you have already found a paper that works for you!

    I’m in awe of your work Lorrie. Do you ever wear a mask while you’re working? How necessary do you think it is?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 роки тому

      Thank you so much! I sometimes wear a respirator with p-100 filters in it, but not every time. I have a very well ventilated place to paint, so after doing plenty of research I decided not to use one when doing smaller paintings that I wasn’t dumping a bunch of alcohol on. My suggestion to people is always to research isopropyl alcohol yourself and make your decision based on that. The fumes can be hazardous in concentration so always use caution. You can never have too much care for your health and well being!

    • @LorrieBrewer

      If you are using heat instead of cool air, it will cause synthetic art papers to warp. Try using a hair dryer with a cool setting on it. That should fix your problem.

    Can you use Mica Pigments with alcohol inks.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  Рік тому

      I need to do some experimenting with actually putting them in inks. I am certain that you can't use them just mixed with alcohol because you have no binder to hold them to the surface once it dries. You might be able to mix micas with something like blending solution, but I'm not sure how they would spread on the paper or blend with colored inks. Guess it's time for me to experiment a little lol.

    This is by far my favourite. I have been struggling, trying to get something that even remotely resembles this. Nope, not happening, not so far at least. I am one of the whispy flower people. When I started, I used canned air. That stuff is very expensive. I quickly got a little tiny airbrush and use that for all of my flowers. But........tomorrow I will make you a flower with my hair dryer, same one that you have. I'm tempted to start now but my art room is beside our bedroom and hubby works in the morning. Stay tuned. Oh yes, I wanted to say that I agree with you about Janette Vivo's work. She taught me how to make my flowers pop with her beautiful centres.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, Jeanette Vivo’s flowers are some of the best and prettiest that I have seen. Maybe one of these days I’ll give them a try. I hate to hear that you are struggling so much with the wispy. Sometimes it is good to step away and try something else to help build some confidence in your abilities back up. You can always come back to wispy later. I hope you don’t give up on it though! If you ever want to send me a short video of how you are painting the wispy ones I will be glad to see if I can spot something that might help you out a little. I hope I don’t lose you on here! You’ve been with me since near the beginning 😃. Thank you for hanging in there with me for so long! 💜

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 роки тому +1

      Lesley-sue Tydeman I’m so sorry to hear that about the dryer. I had the same experience when I first started and it was so frustrating. You can try using it on the lowest setting it has and make sure you stay way back from the edge of your ink/alcohol. Don’t get any closer than you have to to get the ink to move. Be careful of warping your surface from the heat. I would keep a close eye on it and stop frequently to let it cool down some. I learned to do it this way because of the hairdryer I had to start with lol. It’s harder to control the ink, but you can still do it. As for your painting, it might still be salvageable. I still occasionally get too much ink on mine and just wipe some off with something with alcohol on it. Sometimes you can do that and just rework the ink that’s still there with more alcohol and come up with something great. I hope this helps you a little bit! 💜💜

    Thank you Lorrie, this is so amazingly helpful. Do you know whether the strength of Iso is an issue? Mine is 99% so I wondered if it were too strong? It's not an easy product to buy in New Zealand so choices are limited. Do you ever use blending solution instead of Iso? And how about paperstock? Have you ever tried Rock paper? Sorry for all the questions, but your video was such an inspiration :)

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 роки тому +4

      I am so glad the video was helpful to you! With the isopropyl, the higher the strength the better. I use 99% now and feel like it works better than the 91%. I don’t have quite as many issues with moisture beading, although nothing stops it altogether when it’s humid. I have used blending solution, but I personally don’t like it very much. It thickens the inks too much and they don’t move the same way, plus it’s just too expensive in my opinion. Some people prefer it, it’s just my personal preference to use the isopropyl. I have never heard of Rock paper, so I don’t know how it would work. It would have to be waterproof so the inks don’t absorb into the paper. If it is, then it’s something you could try. Card stock won’t work since it isn’t waterproof. You can do this on canvas if you prep it with acrylic gesso or a waterproofing sealant paint like Kilz (in the US). I hope I hit on everything lol. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment!

Then, unbeknownst to me, my husband put some of my paintings up for sale on eBay, and something that I didn’t even like, sold! I couldn’t believe it. It is a Revlon brand styling brush hairdryer with the brush attachment removed. It is only 500 watts so it isn’t too powerful and it has a cool setting which is what I mostly use it on. Any brand that has low wattage (the lower the better, no higher than 500 watts) and a cool setting would be fine for this type of painting. 💜

    Question: so when you put the blue down, are you primarily trying to get it back in the middle, and the wispys come about just because they are coloring the paper before you can get it back to the middle? Do you know what I mean?
    Also: When you say Perpindiculer......is that straight out of the middle line? Or is that a slight angle out from the middle line?
    Also: I don't see your email?

When I put the drop of ink on the surface, whether it be poster board, Yupo or craft plastic, the ink is dried and will not move. I watch you move the inks for several minutes before adding alcohol. What do you suggest?

For the best results let each coat dry completely and sand lightly before applying the next coat.

    I love this video and have learned a lot from it. I'm new to alcohol inks and can see a lot of where I've been going wrong - which doesn't mean from here on I'll be going right! It's a beautiful art but, I think, one of the hardest to learn to control. One of my other hobbies, which I'm not good at but enjoy splashing around at, is watercolour painting and a huge problem I had was watching speeded up demos - my brain insisted I should be painting at that speed; I'm sure you can imagine the result! - so I'm always pleased to find really good demos like this, at 1:1 speed and with great explanations. Thank you Lorrie.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 роки тому

      Sorry for the very belated response. I have been overwhelmed with life lately and am playing catch up. The basic equipment and supplies you would need to get started would be less than $50. How long those supplies last would just depend on how much you paint. The hair dryer that I use would be the biggest expense included in that estimate, at around $20, but I have been using mine for 2 1/2 years now and have not had to replace it yet. Hope this helps some. I was not really sure what you were getting at with your comment.

      which products are expensive to buy back every month, if I do one canvas a day, every day?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 роки тому

      The canvases would be your biggest expense once you got your basic supplies. Whether you resin or just varnish the paintings will make a difference in cost as well. Resin is much more expensive, but you can really get money tied up in varnish as well. I never seem to do the same amount of paintings per month so I am estimating wildly here, but I can probably seal about 15-20 smaller sized paintings with one can each of Krylon Kamar and UV Archival. Those would cost me maybe $20. The prices tend to fluctuate and sometimes I can find 6 packs and save a little more. I don’t resin too many because I just don’t have time, but it takes about 3-4 oz for an 11x14 inch painting. There are just so many variables that I can’t really tell you all of the options lol. The cheapest thing to do would be just seal with the 2 varnishes and mat them if you are selling them. You can get packages of mats, backing, and cellophane bags that end up costing about $2-3 per painting and let your buyer frame it themselves. The inks last for many paintings unless you are just doing really big ones, or using one or two colors a lot, and you can buy isopropyl by the gallon and get it much cheaper. Overall, your monthly costs to replenish supplies would be cheaper than your initial startup, other than the canvas costs. Im sorry I can’t give you exact amounts, but I buy so many other supplies for other art projects that I do, and never do a regular number of alcohol ink paintings each month, that it’s very hard to figure up what I spend on the alcohol ink paintings alone lol. I hope this has helped you some though.

      Antonio Oyarzabal 😃 Thank you! I do not dilute my inks at all in the bottles. I put the undiluted ink on my surface, then a drop or two of Piñata brass (also undiluted) for a metallic, and then apply 99% (or occasionally 91%) isopropyl alcohol on top of all that before I start to move it around. I don’t have a ratio because it just depends on the ink color, how far I want to spread it, and how dark I want to keep the color. I’m sorry I can’t give you a good answer to that question. For me, it’s just a “play it by ear” kind of thing lol. 💜💜

      Lorrie Brewer thank you Lorrie! That’s so kind of you. I see, so not undiluted at all. The problem for me with the Pinata inks is that if I don’t dilute my inks first a little, as soon as I put down the tiniest drop and even if I move it with alcohol and air straight away, it leaves an ink mark on the paper

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 роки тому +1

      Antonio Oyarzabal That can happen quite easily with the more pigmented inks, especially if you are painting on yupo. Almost every ink will stain yupo no matter what you do.

      Antonio Oyarzabal If you want a surface that doesn’t stain as easily you can try Grafix Opaque White Craft plastic or NARA synthetic art paper. I use both of those quite frequently. Both of these are easily obtainable in the US, but I am not sure about other countries. I use yupo occasionally though because I like the depth and color difference the staining on the yupo gives a painting. I hope you can find something you are happy using! 💜

Then I saw somewhere that something similar could be done with alcohol inks, and I had bought a set already! I started watching one person, and she just seemed to be too flighty for my taste...lol Then I saw the photo in this video, and it was SO pretty. And, BONUS! it was a tutorial! Now I just have to figure out what kind of paper you were using in this one. {EDIT: I see now you were using the opaque craft plastic.} I have some Yupo paper, so maybe that'll be it. Thank you so much for the compliments! I order 99% isopropyl alcohol from Amazon most of the time. I have started using it instead of the 91% so that I have a little less problem with moisture beading on my paper. Some pharmacies carry 99% in the store. You might check some of them around you, too. The alcohol from the dollar store should be fine, though. It will be 91% isopropyl and 9% water, the 99% is only 1% water. Hope this helps some! 💜😊

    You make working with the metallic brass so easy. I haven't figured out yet how to get the metallic lines. It always spreads out. Question, you hair dryer, it the air softer than a typical blow dryer? Mine, even on low setting seems to blow all my work every where.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 роки тому +1

      My dryer does blow rather hard on the cool setting. If you haven't watched them yet, check out my videos [19] and [50]. Both of those have a section on ways to help with controlling the inks when using a dryer to move it. As for the brass, I am not sure what to recommend since I can't see exactly how you move your inks. It just takes a lot of practice to learn to work with the brass. I actually quit using it all together for a while until I learned better control with the inks when I was first learning. I messed up every painting I tried to put it on. Being very careful not to overwork your inks is probably the biggest piece of advice I can give you. The brass will just get blended into the inks if you have to keep working the same areas over and over, so it doesn't stay on top of the inks and get pushed into those veins and lines that you want. I hope this helps you a little bit! 💜💜

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 роки тому

      I do not use the Ranger metallics at all. I just can't get the same results with them that I do with the Pinata brass. The only metallics that I use are Pinata brass for a gold color and Molotow Liquid Chrome for a silver. They will move much better and float on the ink/alcohol to give you those fine lines and veins. Some people have said they have had good results with the other Ranger metallics, but I just can't get them to work for me. Some of the Ranger metallics and pearls need blending solution instead of isopropyl to use at all. Some of them will clump up and look like colored curdled milk on your paper. I hope you can figure out a way to use them. I would love to have some color options for the metallic! 💜😊

If you wouldn’t have pointed out those mistakes, I would’ve probably thought, that this was your goal and that your painting came out the way you wanted it to, because to be honest; in my opinion it’s perfect. Also when you say things like “sometimes it doesn’t come out the way you want it and the paint does what it wants“ or “don’t give up if it doesn’t work out the first time“ it really means a lot to me, because sometimes I‘m really about to give up on that, but your words and your beautiful paintings give me the strength to keep continuing ❤️

      Thank you for the compliment! You can use a straw, but watch out for moisture build up inside it or it will be dripping onto your painting (yes, I know this from experience lol). You can also just blow directly with your mouth, but you'll get a little bit different results like that. You can use any hairdryer with a cool setting (or a "coolish" warm setting) as long as the airflow isn't too strong. • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 роки тому

      Thank you! You really do need to seal it, even if framing. Alcohol inks can fade rather quickly when exposed to much UV light since they have nothing in them to protect from that. I would seal them anyway, just to prevent accidental scratching or smudging when framing.

    I have been doing Acrylic Abstract paintings for over a year...LOL, I find that SO much easier than Alcohol Inks. I feel like a failure when I see all these gorgeous works of art. Mine look awful! Have tried my airbrush (not a good idea), the rocket bulb (I like it, but still could not get it looking great), and the hair dryer (which I have been using wrong). After watching you today, it gives me the inspiration to try again. Thank You

    Truly Stunning. I love this colour combination x I can never get my metallics to bunch up like that if you know what I mean.

      💜 Thank you so much! Piñata brass is the only metallic that I can get this type of results with. If you haven’t tried it yet, you definitely should! It made all the difference for me when I finally started using it. 😃💜

    Hi there, this is beautiful. I really struggle with the tim holtz gold ink it comes out really chunky and i feel like i cant get the delicate electric/lighting lines, instead the gold blends into the coloured ink and looks flat. Any tips?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 роки тому

      Priya Walia 😃 Lol My biggest tip for that is to get some Piñata brass. I could never get these lines until I started using it. None of the Tim Holtz metallics or any of the other Jacquard Piñata metallics will work like this for me. If you can get the Piñata brass I think you’ll see a big difference in how it moves compared to the other metallics. 💜💜

    WOW stunning work, I'm a new subbie and new to Alcohol Ink (I only got 3 colours that don't even go very well together) I am so happy I found you and now I have to go and look at more of your videos, but I do LOVE this painting and hope that some day I can do something similar (hugs from Iceland) One thing I'm wondering about well no two things really, paper! can I use any paper if I prebb it with Gesso or can I use photo paper! and that shimmering "stuff" is that also Alcohol Ink? Thank you for sharing this amazing video

    The past couple days I've felt like I've wasted $100s because I can't get this down. Thank you for mentioning that because I was really mad at myself for it.

      I use 99% isopropyl alcohol, but you can use 91% if you can't find the 99%. 😀

      😃 I am glad it has helped you some! If you are brand new, you might want to watch video 19. It is just a straight up tutorial showing tips for some of the most frequent problems people have asked me about. I don’t do a full painting in it, just demonstrate some, but it might give you some more tips to keep in mind. 😃 Thank you for watching! 💜💙
