  • The TSS Duke of Lancaster is a railway steamer passenger ship that operated from 1956 to 1979, and is currently beached near Mostyn Docks, on the River Dee, north-east Wales.
    Although not accessible to the public this drone footage shows some of her current, sad, state.

    She is beautiful. Allowing her to deteriorate like this is criminal. She should be scuttled with dignity and respect.

    When i was a Youngster.. Perhaps the Early eighties or late seventies. I'm sure we went to this ship for a day. I seem to remember watching watership down in the Theatre.. I know this ship. I stood at the front and touched it as a Young child. I can remember that... Living in Canada now for over 30 years.. Amazing!

    Beautiful ship - I was on her once sailing from Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire in the late 1970s. I was only 11 at the time and I seem to remember a lot wood panelling and the ship divided into first and second class.

    Wow! I'm from the US and I know we can't save every ship, but it does have great lines and making it into a hotel seams like it would be cool if only you had it booked all the time so it pays for itself. Nice ship for sure.

    • @AnthonyHandcock
      @AnthonyHandcock 2 роки тому +1

      Turning old ships into anything other that scrap metal has an almost universal habit of being financially unviable unfortunately. It's mostly the "if only you had it booked all the time" problem but as often as not they are just too damned expensive compared to bricks and mortar so they can't compete.
      There was an old paddle steamer near me that had various incarnations as a pub / nightclub and every time the business failed, usually very rapidly, it got sold on to somebody even less likely to be able to pay for maintenance, "mooring" fees and so on. It ended up sunk in a dock with a hull full of concrete to keep the water out and totally beyond salvation. It's bean tins now.

    Nice to see that despite the condition people still want to see that the Duke of Lancaster be saved.
    The situation with the Queen Mary is similar although no where near as bad as she is indeed beginning the first stage of being repaired. However the toxicity of people in the States and her is horrific. Over here in the US they truly have conditioned the people to give up at the first opportunity. Most of them at least not all.
    As a historian I believe if it can be saved even if its s slimmer of a chance it should be done.

    • @americanace96
      @americanace96 2 роки тому

      Unfortunately, the Queen Mary is in California. What I say next will be my personal bias. The state is broken in more ways than one and the people there keep voting for it. Not to mention some of the more powerful people have this weird idea that their position makes them smarter than those below them. For the longest time, the Queen Mary was treated as a building. Not even as a floating one; just a regular building you'd see on land. Because of that only minimal steps were taken against the sea. Honestly, I would like to see her and the SS United States in the Gulf of Mexico (since putting them back in service is out of the question).

    • @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent
      @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent 2 роки тому

      @@americanace96 I just said they are beginning to start repairs on Queen Mary. Long Beach really wants the ship repaired. Of course there is talks of perhaps moving her closer to shoreline village. Where she could be better protected and the area there near the yacht club provides ample room for entertainment down town facilities and similar to be built. . Not everything is as bad as you think. Also I wouldnt want Queen Mary next to United States. United States should be given to a city back east that can care for her and out of the dockyard shes at. I'm hoping she is still sound however. She's taken a hell of a beating far more than Queen Mary has since being docked.

    I hate to see a good ship wasted. A group of us tried to buy and save SS UGANDA the schools ship that was used in the Falklands as a hospital ship. We travelled to Port Stanley in her. The idea was to preserve the ship in private hands but I believe due to some cock up she ended up being cut up by mistake? I cant stand to see the photos of here she ended up beached and then badly damaged after breaking her moorings I think. From there just a matter of time she was torched. Many many people were furious about that.

      Thats sort of a regional thing. Her value as scrap is not much if scrapped in the UK. If she was towed to a nation without metal ore for making new steal, then her value goes up, more so if you add cheap labour and lacked environmental laws there. Which is why ships are towed often around the world to be scrapped. I doubt she could make the trip to Turkey or Pakistan, so it would likely cost money to have her scrapped.
