Brilliant - well done Ashley, you keep up the good work. I went for a walk alongside the other day while we were at Abakhan. The last time I was on board I remember being very drunk.....not a brilliant memory for me, but it was certainly part of our lives for a very short time and has left it's mark.
Can you imagine the revenue that could have been brought to the area if she were allowed to be what the owner intended? She has put the place on the map as it is! Such a sad sad story but hopefully one that we can make into a happy ending....
Thank you for making such a wonderful video. Loved it. I especially liked how you made the music different. One exciting for the ship out at sea and the other nice and eerie for when it is rested on the docks. Well done.
Being fascinated by abandoned ships i researched the Duke and it seems like the council after being enthusiastic then just did everything they could to kill the venture. Absolutely ridiculous.
Yes they did Ian. So much so, the owners closed the Funship themselves to concentrate on other businesses. They always planned to return hoping the council will have calmed down a little. They did but they carried on attacking the venture and still do to this day. Doesn't make any sense at all!
She's an iconic landmark, even in the 'eyesore' state she is in and Flintshire Council are totally to blame for that. As well as her history she has also suffered at the hands of a corrupt Council and still is, for me that is worth fighting on it's own.
she still is in her unique way.. i traveled fro lincolnshire to visit.. she just looks bit worn out now ... still attracts though ,gd bit history there thank you ive never been inside, would love that chance ,but times not a good healer ,not for her ... shame ,love this vid btw
Great video... i do hope they save the old gal, i used to always see this ship on my way to pontins prestatyn sands when i was a kid, i always looked out for her.. i do hope she does not end up like the manxman, a very similar ship (im on their facebook page) these classic ships need to be saved, not left to rot and be scrapped.. i would love to go on the duke.... lets hope someone saves her before its too late, thanks for posting.
very good and very true even the comments, it can not be moved now 2 cost 2 much even as scrap shuch a pitty to see as i recall it arriving here there lots of past behind it all pitty most who knew all are dead 2 be honest
Simply put, the blame falls on the city council. They have squashed any and all plans to really turn this into a cool attraction. Why ? I have no idea. I mean it's there landlocked into position a lot like the Queen Mary in California.
The Council seem to hate the ship and scupper any plans that may give her a future. Why? I have my own thoughts on that and believe she was a victim of circumstance. In the right place at the wrong time. During the early 1980's there was a lot going on with the local authority. Much of that was recently brought to light, making headline news and detailing something quite shocking. I think the ship just 'got in the way'. That's all I can say.
Brilliant work, Ashley, fascinating and sad. I have a personal connection with "The Duke" as my grandfather was chief purser throughout her life. I'm looking at photographs of him now, drinking, dancing, always surrounded by women. He told me some funny stories of what went on at sea, dodgy dealing, fighting, a well known actress drinking too much and stripping. I'm amazed to see how intact she is inside. The last time I was on board was at a Christmas party in 1974 when I had my photograph taken with a monkey. My father was an avid collector of Isle of Man Steam Packet company and I have dozens of great photographs of the ship inside and out. For me to go back on board after all these years would be as exciting as entering the pyramid at Giza! Damn the council! Stephen Walker.
+Stephen Walker Thank you Stephen. What I wouldn't give for chat with you lol! I love hearing stories about the ship and would love to see your pics too! I would be honored if you would take a look at the Appreciation Society on Facebook. You will find the pic section interesting. There are a few members who used to either work on board or traveled on her regularly. facebook.com/groups/dukeoflancaster.a.s
Nice little video with great shots but the duke of lancaster website mentioned in your description seems to have been taken down......so what was the real story behind it all?
Great video...👏

Brilliant. Childhood memories. Magical. Well done.
I remember my dad taking me on when I was a kid..
Such a shame to see her the way she is now. I really hope something can be done to get her back to her funship days!
