The first version of the chip, commonly referred to as simply "Super FX", is clocked with a 21 MHz signal, but an internal clock speed divider halves it to 10.5 MHz. Later on, the design was revised to become the Super FX GSU-2; this, unlike the first Super FX chip revision, is able to reach 21 MHz. All versions of the Super FX chip are functionally compatible in terms of their instruction set. The differences arise in how they are packaged, their pinout, and their internal clock speed. As a result of changing the package when creating the GSU-2, more external pins were available and assigned for addressing. As a result, a larger amount of external ROM or RAM can be accessed.
Seeing this game has just opened the flood gates of nostalgia. I'm telling you all, I played this game to the point I would throw the controller at the wall in sheer anger. xD MAN those were good times...
This game had much more dynamic terrain than Virtua Racing too - lots of bumps and slopes and banked turns, with physics to go along with them. It felt like a cross between a rally and an off-road game, and a lot of the fun came from going real fast and keeping the car under control through all the crazy jumps. Simulating that must have taken a lot of power too - I'm sure Sega's chip was faster but VR had a lot less going on too, so you can't really compare the games for their speed
this looks so fucking great! very very little background buildup, excellent fluid graphics and sound top notch too. just look how fast it goes..amazing
+buckeigh I used to always rent this from my grocery store! I'm not going to lie, looking back at it, it's extremely impressive for running on the SNES.
Personally, I think this chip was an unbelievably great source of new ideas, eventhough it was not psuhed to its borders. Imagine a 3d fps, somr kind of 3d open world game. I know this all was released for the N64, but some of those games for a classic system would be epic.
I remember trying to play this game on my SNES as a kid. It didn't work. At the time I thought that there was something wrong with the game. Since I rented it. I now know what the Super FX chip is. Found out about that a few years ago.
Could anyone help me remember this racing game for the SNES I mean it wasn't racing you weren't racing against other players but you like had to avoid things on the road and like bombs and stuff?
Very true! I still find it amazing what the N64 did once it had the ram expansion. There was almost no comparison graphically! Like a new system in some ways.
@llinkll Blast processing isn't actually a thing, you know... You're talking about the Virtua Processor, which was, indeed, Sega's reaction to the Super FX technology. Only used in a single game, though, and that was one expensive game at the time. The Super FX chip was older and put to good use in several other games. I don't think it's fair to compare them side by side without taking things like cost and versatility into consideration. Unfortunately, I don't know much about either.
the sega megadrive/genesis, also had a few 3D games. the best of which is virtua racer which actually runs quite a bit faster then this one. but yes this game does look good for its time and console.
Looks like a good game once you really get into it and I suppose you can't blame the Super FX chip to much as it was only one of the first titles to utilise it.
Eventrough this game feels more like driving on ice but i am amezed that this game runs on the fx1 chip and NOT on the fx2 chip, seriousely this game has lots of polygons unlike fortex or starfox,i played this game in the mid-00's.
I honestly prefer Stunt Race FX over Genesis Virtua Racing. May not be as fast, but gameplay and variety wise it was WAY better. Also... well, if I wanted to play VR, I preferred going to the arcade. Yes, I'm being unfair there :P
if u put the game in first person view game play was better and smother because the fx chip didnt have to render your own car, could shave 2 seconds off ur race time to.
those controls are sluggish& horrible and it,s a challange to get used with it. it,s nearly impossible wich makes it sooo challanging. those stunt trax are nice but the trax are not designed with those sluggish controls in mind so you will get easy out of bend and sometimes it,s hard to tell were to go,also the time limmit is actualy too short to get all 40/50 stars. sure this game has an incredible amount of polygons with some textures on it. i can,t believe this is based on superfx1 chip!
Lol Nintendo. Lol. There was another racing game that came out that year by a proper company. You might want to look up Virtua Racing for the Sega Mega Drive and prepare to fill your undies with the speed, tight gameplay and blistering 20fps solid, no lag. Ever. Nice try Nintendo. SEGA!
Stunt Race FX is a crap game. The framerate is really poor, the visuals are in a small window, and the controls are stupid. It was a disaster. I was expecting something special, what a let down it was.

I used to love playing this game as a little kid. Seeing this makes me want to play it again.

i remember renting this game a lot when I was a kid as well. This game reminds me of Sega's Virtual Racing.
Loved this game. Thanks for taking me back...
holy shit i remember this game. I have faint memories of me playing this when i was 4 or 3.. wow.. thanks for helping me reconnect with my past
I still own this game on the SNES. Great memories.
I loved this game back in my childhood.
Blissfully unaware how hard it actually was! Good times
This game actually came out in the states on July '94. Europe wouldn't get this until October that year.
I liked that the hillbilly music made the game less serious than other games like F-Zero.....which was awesome, just less serious :3
--haven't seen this since '95, good times growing up...
Just bought a super nintendo from a local store with this game. Pretty fun :)
I used to play this game all the time. I actually got pretty good at it.
this looks so fucking great! very very little background buildup, excellent fluid graphics and sound top notch too. just look how fast it goes..amazing
I played this game when I was little....I still have the same cartridge too.
Was just playing this last night. Its funny when you hit the walls your vehicle goes partly through them. lol.
oh man i used to rent this game so much. love this game!
+buckeigh I used to always rent this from my grocery store! I'm not going to lie, looking back at it, it's extremely impressive for running on the SNES.
yah i remember it just had the sickest graphics. the amount of times i rented this game as a kid.. i probably could have bought it with the money.
So true! I rented it at least 4 times lol
I was looking for that childhood game!
Personally, I think this chip was an unbelievably great source of new ideas, eventhough it was not psuhed to its borders. Imagine a 3d fps, somr kind of 3d open world game. I know this all was released for the N64, but some of those games for a classic system would be epic.

The most fun thing about this game is using the horn! If I remember correctly it does a cool animation for it.
it's the model 2 '97 re-release of the snes called the snes jr.
The power of 32-bit gaming!
:D
Did you try the easter egg that shows up firefox ships flying in the sky when hitting a specific panel in a race?
ahhh so many gooooooood times spent on this game!!!
I didn't know the Super Nintendo can do graphics that well! Long live the Super Nintendo!
Steering took a bit of ZEN majic to get right. But once you tracked into how the cars reacted the handling was quite intuative for a D pad type game.
Very true! I still find it amazing what the N64 did once it had the ram expansion. There was almost no comparison graphically! Like a new system in some ways.
They have this game on the N64? I've seen Stunt Race 64 but it's made my Midway and not Nintendo and looks quite different.
Oh, I thought it was because I'm using an earlier SNES model. The game is choppy, but its still playable.
The underwater tunnels look familiar somewhat
Good news! It's back on the SNES Online app on Nintendo Switch!
@girlsdrinkfeck I like playing emulators but for the real experience you need to play it on an old CRT tv with the super nintendo and controller.
Why have I never heard of this game before? I must buy it!
Ah, I played this at a Toys R Us once! Controlwas hard as hell. I'd like to play it again, though!
fun game. unlocking the bike is a must
it's the Stunt Race FX equivalent of the Fire Stingray
I remember playing this game and couldnt never remember the name of it

Great video! Very informative.
How did you get that to run so smooth? Mine's really choppy. Maybe its because your using a newer SNES model than mine.
cool, you got an SNES like mine XD
Hey Jaguar, how many bits did you say you have again?
Released on this VERY day in 1994! 2009 marks the 15th Anniversary of this game!
This game looks quite good, shame that it isn't on full screen like Virtua Racing on MD/Genesis.
I played the crap out of this game. I loved it and it had great music. I thought this game was amazing back then when I owned a SNES.
i wish someone would put up a video of the N64 version
That's strange in my memory, they also was a "moto" and "truck"... :/
I love this game, me and my sis used 2 play this all tha time. I still have tha game, but my SNES dosent work. :(
That looks beautiful for a fcking snes damn I wish I had this It would have blown my mind.
The only thing that creeped me out about this game was the cars had eyes...hahaha
the sega megadrive/genesis, also had a few 3D games.
the best of which is virtua racer which actually runs quite a bit faster then this one.
but yes this game does look good for its time and console.
Stunt Race FX sounds better to me than wild tracks lol
Looks like a good game once you really get into it and I suppose you can't blame the Super FX chip to much as it was only one of the first titles to utilise it.
omg this was my favourite snes game as a kid! but i remember it being hard as shit!
I just got this game complete in box for $8 all minty I love it.
Really cool game
I'm jealous.. I always wanted this as a kid.. WOOOAHH!!! SFX DUDE!!! [:
I think I prefer Mario Kart on reflection mind you, but still - SFX!!
Eventrough this game feels more like driving on ice but i am amezed that this game runs on the fx1 chip and NOT on the fx2 chip, seriousely this game has lots of polygons unlike fortex or starfox,i played this game in the mid-00's.
With additional hardware any console can do anything :).
I honestly prefer Stunt Race FX over Genesis Virtua Racing. May not be as fast, but gameplay and variety wise it was WAY better.
Also... well, if I wanted to play VR, I preferred going to the arcade. Yes, I'm being unfair there :P
i played the crap out of this game as a kid. We only played it because the graphics wowed us.
I wanna play this.
I just bought a boxed copy for 50 cents on amazon, too bad shipping was $4.

the 1 player mode is hard

Has a weird resemblance of Star Fox and Star Fox 2.
i played the shit out of this as a kid
Man I used to love this game!!!! Didn’t remember it being so choppy and poor lol! I used to kill it in this game!
Doesn't *look* so great, but I remember this game was more fun than it had any right to be. (A bit like Stunt Car Racer in that respect).
YES!!!!
if u put the game in first person view game play was better and smother because the fx chip didnt have to render your own car, could shave 2 seconds off ur race time to.
damn good 3d for 16bit
Thanks. Cool! ;)
HELL YEA IT WOULD HAVE!!!
i played the shit out of this game when it came out.. the underwater tunnels was like wtf!?

i can,t believe this is based on superfx1 chip!

i had that game and it SUCKS haha :)
How many years wasted trying to finsih this game with uncontrolable cars! ;)
SEGA!
lol there is even Mario propaganda in this game.
Yes, but this game plays horrid compared to Mario Kart on snes.
dude ur snes is weird lol
Stunt Race FX is a crap game. The framerate is really poor, the visuals are in a small window, and the controls are stupid. It was a disaster.
I was expecting something special, what a let down it was.
Loved this game. Thanks for taking me back...
