Pausing half-way in the video. So, I can't say without knowing the program and how exactly it responds, but, I am an audio engineer. Turning the compression all the way up and then boosting the gain, combined with a hard limiter at a low threshold is pretty bad. What you're doing is squishing your high volume down to roughly equal volume as your lowest volume, boosting the noise floor back up to high volume levels, then clipping the absolute hell out of everything because it's trying to limit it back down below where all of your volume levels are boosted to. Try backing off the compression and gain first, while opening the limiter all the way. Ease the compressor threshold until your high and low volumes are comfortably controllable, but still distinct. After, use the gain to make up the volume you naturally lose by compressing the highs, and then use the limiter just for extreme spike protection purposes. High and low pass do what they say - they let high or low frequency pass into the signal. They don't add anything to the source audio, and only remove frequencies, so start with them maxed out. Given you're using a Webcam mic, you can probably set the high pass rather high and set the low pass down to minimize that muffled room audio effect. Cutting both will only let the mids through, which is why your audio sounds like a telephone sometimes. As for the drive section, you should optimally be entirely able to bypass it if your levels are correct. Pre-gain is deciding how much of the original signal goes into the next stage. Distortion then flattens your audio peaks by lowering what volume level begins clipping. Post gain is for boosting this back up in cases of higher distortion, as it can reduce overall volume. If you turn distortion all the way down, start with higher Pre-gain, then begin balancing your pre and post gain, you should get relatively clean audio depending on the sample rate. Yours is clipping less because of the distortion settings, it seems, but more because of how you have the compressor and limiter set with the eq section. Now, I say I'd need to see the program to better explain this, because some of these descriptions are rather loose. Is turning up the threshold control on the compressor turning the threshold point up - as in higher decibel levels - or down - as in increasing the overall effect? What does the limiter mean by a threshold and a ceiling? A limiter is by nature a ceiling that the volume cannot go over with infinite-to-1 compression ratio. Do the compressor and limiter settings work together? Perhaps the Threshold dB on the limiter side controls the compressor threshold, the ceiling controls the limit point, and maybe the compressor threshold control is actually a ratio control? Wouldn't know unless I was able to test it out some. And sample rate may help with audio lag, but I'm not sure. Analog audio is seamless and can be slowed infinitely until the pitch is too low to hear, but digital audio has to be recorded in segments as it's converting the audio into binary strings per sample rate of time. Higher sample rates sound closer to analog audio, but are larger in terms of data. Think of it like how a movie shot on film can be almost infinitely scaled up and keep defined edges, but a digital recording can only be as crisp as the settings it was recorded at. That said, that movie on film is going to be a *hell* of a lot of data in 8k. In recording audio, you generally want high sample rates because the audio is processed in post and can be time matched if needed, and you get the best possible audio quality that can be reduced per format. Live, however, it could be lagging as it tries to save the same data amount when the audio is registered and hitting the processor harder. Still, it could just be a quality setting for effect. Long story short, blah blah audio settings. It's great to know what you're doing in terms of live audio work and recording, but it's the kind of career choice where you spend 30 minutes making a comment on UA-cam because you're unemployed and people would rather hire their cousin that sells speakers to do all their audio work. Which is why I'm in creative writing now.
I think the game really just needs an automatic setting for the crustiness of the microphone. Most users, especially streamers, would be satisfied with a single slider that adjusts the intensity of some predefined settings. If they want to maintain this level of tweakability, then it really should be hidden behind an 'advanced mode' checkbox to avoid issues like this where Vinny fiddles with it endlessly to no avail because you actually need to be an audio engineer to understand how to get the result you want.
Godot has these audio filters baked-in to the engine, but I don't have the slightest clue what's needed to actually give good mic crust, unfortunately. So the current compromise is to give the user most of the options a la carte. At the very least, you're right that I should've included WHAT the leftmost and rightmost slider values for each one actually is, to give an idea of why you're moving the slider.
@@FairWeatherPierce Vague audio terms are pretty common in the whole of the industry, so don't feel bad there. Humans are mostly visual creatures, and the ultimate final rule of audio is to ignore your eyes and use your ears. Otherwise, you'd be explaining things like decibel meters, which in terms of sound start at zero and go up with exponential volume representation, but in audio mostly register in the negatives and your goal is to near unity gain at 0 and not cross into positives. Which, yeah, not exactly good for the layman to dive into, so a vague term and a knob is probably the better compromise. It's just that the more parameters you add, each changes the response of the others, and it gets harder to tell what each control individually does. I think most of Vinny's issue is not truly understanding the compressor. It's a great tool for vocal performance and basic audio clean up, but gets a bit complicated. If it works how I think, you could change the threshold slider to just say "compression", since that's audibly what changing the threshold does to everything that crosses over it. The limiter is decent for preventing unwanted clipping, but it's basically just a compressor with a massive compression ratio. I feel like those two sections could be put together into just a "compressor" box with "compression", "limit ceiling" and "output level". That distortion setting is your ultimate mic crust territory, as increasing distortion also compresses audio. Overdrive, distortion, and fuzz are all "gain" effects, and they're basically boosting the signal into an artificial ceiling to cause more clipping. Depending on the settings, that could be by lowering the threshold or boosting up to it, but the result is always that your audio signal gets squished and anything loud gets its audio peaks lopped off. Back in the day, this distorted effect required huge amounts of output volume that went over what the amplifier or processor could handle. With both pre and post gain, though, the user should be able to crust it up as they prefer, and be able to control how loud it outputs so it's not blasting the viewers. Maybe rename pregain to "input volume" and post gain to "output volume" for a general audience. The eq is good for shaping this effect, though I do meet people with decent audio experience that still don't seem to understand the "pass" naming system - a pass control doesn't really affect the frequency range that's listed on the control, after all. It's probably better to set the controls so the input audio is clean at 0, rename hi pass to low cut, and low pass to high cut. People seem to better understand what it means to cut frequencies versus allowing them to pass. Play around some, and you may find some interesting tones for "preset" options, and then the player would only need a volume slider based on what kind of mic and room they're using. Not all presets need to work for every situation, but it would be a decent option for people that just want to hurry up and get into the game.
Vinny has the unique distinction of being able to do a terrible impression of himself while perfectly recreating the sounds of a suffocating blowfish and a wet gnome fart.

High quality comment.
so happy to see more of this
YOUR DINNER WORKS PERFECTLY
Was "Let's go check it out" part of a pack yet?
29:27 and 33:39 are the two parts I laughed uncontrolably.
"how do you want me to do that" said vinny, singer of Red Vox, before doing it perfectly.
I was crying with laughter when Vinny was changing his webcam mic settings.
Choicer voices is just an elaborate scheme to get vinesauce to recite the entire CBT wiki article
If anything I learned that loud doesn't just equal funny but it also equals more votes.
29:28 chat what Pokemon cry is that I can't put my finger on it
Please do more of this, I love voicer choicer.
he should had put the high pass cutoff slider off to the left, the low frequencies where too cut off making it sound like a walkie talkie.
Crust for dinner
Vinny has the unique distinction of being able to do a terrible impression of himself while perfectly recreating the sounds of a suffocating blowfish and a wet gnome fart.
New Steamed Hams edit just dropped.
Steamed Hams but it's done entirely by Vinny Vinesauce in The Choicer Voicer
If the dev reads these comments, a nice feature would be enabling TTS on the hosts. Maybe even let you change the TTS settings per host.
I wonder if he ever wonders- ever wonders about whats for dinner
1:41:17 I was not ready for Beanyort's perfect flute impression
This has become my most awaited game of 2024. I'm not even kidding, I do voice acting as a hobby, and this seems like the ultimate test.
I wonder (what’s for dinner) if like some sort of program that accounts for the timing being rough and will automatically sort of shift the chunks into the most logical places would make the game better
“I WONDER WHATS FOR DINNER” will haunt my mind
