I had a similar issue with my 2010 V-Strom. At least as far as the buffeting (many did). I bought an aftermarket screen, which wasn't any better. I finally ended up cutting the top 70% of the original screen off which made it bearable. It looks like there is way too much screen pushing through way too much air there.
So much better without it now. I had forgotten how smooth the air is on the bike. At high speed I never feel that push of air, so really, the screen wasn't needed.
I ride a 2018 and find the wonder noise even with my fitted CB500X windscreen similarly noisey but essential on the coldest days riding. I have a short summer screen from K2 Factory on Facebook and love their stuff. Just installed engine guards also onto which I will mount mini driving lights. Highly recommended.
Also I replaced the awful grey side panels with matching black panels. The bike looks far better and should have come that way from the start in my humble opinion. Email me for photos of what I have done if you like. Madmonkeytours@gmail.com
Engine guards: nice. I'm not bothered about the cold on this bike as I only ride it at 5° or above; mostly above 10° C. Much better for me without the screen now.
Oh yeah, those silver panels bothered me as well, but for me I found it was the huge CB decal that put me off. I ike the panels plain now. The silver takes on a finer look without the decals. For sure, I'll email. Be good to see what you've done.
I prefer less windshield. i'm used to old bike with no wind protection. It's a much more quiet ride. Everyone seems to go to a bigger and bigger piece of plexi glass to get rid of wind. When less is more. The bike is looking great.
Cheers Tim. Since this, I've altered the mic position and eliminated the 'chamber sound' on the voice. Satisfied now. That video will be live on Thursday.
Hi, how much torque do i need to apply to these bolts, i can't find in the manual. I just bought this windscreen, i wish i will be happy of it lol. And thanks.
It did for the most part. I found it comfortable. The design is good. For me it came down to a personal preference for having nothing in front of me. The air on this bike is clean coming at you. But, I prefer shorter rides. On longer rides, especially fast ones, the windscreen would be a definite asset.
No, I currently have a foam covering over the mic and the mic is positioned in the chin guard right on front of my mouth. In this video it may have been set up differently.
Hi Mr Scoot so much better without the screen, mic placement seems good, don't know on a hot day with the visor cracked open though, we will have to see, that is when it gets hot again, if were aloud out with this dam virus, what times we are in its mad, ATB Wayne.
Thanks Wayne. On hot days this helmet is comfortable. Tons of air flows through the chin vents. I never need to crack it open except at stops sometimes. Yes, crazy times for sure. Stay healthy eh.
I use that same Sony mic its awesome crystal clear sound no matter where I place it. I also have a very popular moto mic by Movo battery powered and the Sony is as good or better! The Drift may be contributing to this a little as well maybe is doesn't like the Sony mic and gets confused with levels!? Who knows!
I chose it because it was Sony, but compared to the Drift it doesn't pick up as well unless positioned right in front of the mouth, and it clips out at lower volumes than the Drift would. Could be, as you say, some combination of camera and mic not liking one another. Also, the helmet has changed and it could be I made that change around the same time as the mic; I can't recall. This helmet has more of a chamber sound than my previous Fly Dual Sport helmet. It's more comfortable though, and more air gets to the face when the visor is down, so I like it better. I think I can make the mic work.
I think I may put the mic back into the chin guard as it was before. I just checked the previous video . The voice is clearer; doesn't have that chamber sound. I'll just need to remember not to raise my voice too much when riding at higher speed to avoid the distortion.
@@Scoottoots Yes that's where my mic has always been in the chin guard its literally touching my nose and I yell sometimes and never had a clipping issue ever! Its also odd the wind noise cause some of my motocross style helmets are extremely windy in fact the mic sits in one of the vent holes and never had a wind noise issue! I would put money on the Drift not liking the mic cause I can testify 100% that mic is extremely good quality I'm sure you've seen my videos never a sound issue!! On a side note if it goes in the chin guard you can block the vent off with a piece of duct tape on the inside!
I have ridden this bike much faster than that for extended time, and yeah I find it especially hard on the neck. 130kph is not too bad. Without a screen the air is not turbulent and the slight forward lean cancels much of the pressure. I don't use the screen now. I just accept that it's a naked bike. I enjoy the air, and limit how fast I'll ride for extended time.
You mentioned using the ‘crows foot’ with your toque wrench. Maybe you are aware, maybe some viewers aren’t, the crows foot will not give an accurate torque. There is much info on the web for correcting for the error created when using the crows foot. In some cases it may not amount to much but until the calculations are done the torqued achieved is indeterminate. Just thought I would mention it.
No, that theory has been proven false with proper testing. No matter how many extensions and such you use on a torque wrench, there is no appreciable variance in accuracy. Once all the slack has been taken up from the fittings, the torque is the same. But thanks gd :-)
Windscreens are the worst....... Ive had a kawasaki versys, which after 30mph was brutal........A vstrom which sucked and a cb500 with a screen like yours which I hated. Can't win!!
Good info - especially because you show the difference.
Thanks Tarzan :-)

Yeah, that's what I'm finding out. Less is more as you say. Much better ride without the screen. Thanks AZ :-)
WAAAAY better. Bike looks good.
Cheers Tim. Since this, I've altered the mic position and eliminated the 'chamber sound' on the voice. Satisfied now. That video will be live on Thursday.
All I can say about the screen is that it really looked good on the bike .
Yeah I thought so as well :-)
So much better without the windshield!👍
Thanks. Yes it is. I further improved the voice reproduction in the next video. Happy with it now :-)
Hi, how much torque do i need to apply to these bolts, i can't find in the manual. I just bought this windscreen, i wish i will be happy of it lol. And thanks.
The upper pinch bolts require 16 lb ft or torque. The lower ones require much more.
Microphone aside, did the windshield give good wind protection at highway speed?
It did for the most part. I found it comfortable. The design is good. For me it came down to a personal preference for having nothing in front of me. The air on this bike is clean coming at you. But, I prefer shorter rides. On longer rides, especially fast ones, the windscreen would be a definite asset.
Are you using a dead cat to suppress wind noise?
No, I currently have a foam covering over the mic and the mic is positioned in the chin guard right on front of my mouth. In this video it may have been set up differently.

Strange things screens. What can look like giving the ultimate protection, can be the worst of all.
Yup that's the upshot for me. Less is more is this case :-)

Try going 130km/h with no screen for about 1hour

Haha, yeah I've not had much luck with them either. I kinda like the up front raw riding experience anyway :-)
Sound alot better.
Yup it does. The next video sounds better yet. Changed the mic position.. Thanks :-)
