I met Dennis the day that yellow kit arrived via UPS. He was touring with Santana @ Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD near where he grew up in Baltimore. Before the show he was hanging out near the beer stand talking with some friends & family and I went up & said hello. That night he played a turquoise kit but he told me a new Canary yellow kit just showed up that day. Very cool & friendly guy. Met him twice actually. When I asked him who made him first want to play drums, he replied "James Brown" which came as a surpriseto me bec JB isn't even a drummer. But JB's groves were so rhythmic, so next level, he may as well have been considered a percussionist.
He was also offered the opportunity to play with JB by JB himself, but his mother didn't let him because JB didn't want to pay a private tutor for Dennis (he was still in school back then) while he was on the road.
Dennis is the only drummer to ever turn down playing with Miles Davis ... he can swing like few others. This performance was on "Master Drummer" by Secrets of the Pros ... =)
Seriously? Do you research before you comment, he not only plays jazz on this DVD but has played with the buddy rich big band on many occasions, he IS indeed a master drummer.
Dennis, you are my favorite ve for Steve Gadd but you are unreal and have been since I was studying with Kim Plainfield along with frank Katz, he always said yeah vinnies great but Dennis is Bad
Mad cool groove sounded better slower, understood it easier the faster it got. Its really not as hard to play this as the comments are reading, long as yo can play good ghost notes, its straight 4/4 its not.a polymeter r anything
Wonderful Musician, but no mention of Mr. Clyde Stubblefield at all... Mr. Clyde Stubblefield was one of Mr. James Brown's main men. As always all respect to Maestro Chambers.
Gee, thanks for explaining to us all what JAZZ is!!! Have YOU ever heard Dennis play "Jazz"? I guess you better explain it also to guys like John Scofield, Joey DeFrancesco and John McLaughlin (among many others that have used his services) I'm pretty sure he could "swing" you into bad health my friend!!
Some guys aren't meant to teach, you can't blame them, they're made to play and amaze. Same goes with sports, if you're an amazing sporter, it doesn't mean you're a great coach. For them some skills come natural, that aren't for us, that's where the difference is.
fyi, jazz is a umbrella term.. jazz drumming is anything improvisational ... its swing drumming that you are talking about which you have not explained clearly
Sounded (felt) better at a (the first) slower tempo. A "Master Drummer" can play just about ALL styles equally well (mastered). Ever hear Dennis play Jazz? I am referring to SWINGING a Ride Cymbal while "comping" the bass drum and snare drum. "Master Drummer" ?
JB wouldn't be having any of that. He'd say, yeah the hi-hat is fine but what's the rest of it doin'? That ain't no groove. Get me Jabo or Clyde in here, shit.
dennis' snare drums are some of the most haunted places on earth.
Dennis is one of my top favorite drummers along with Dave Weckl - Vinnie Colaiuta - Thomas Lang - Simon Phillips :-)

Anyone notice his little "mmm's" n "aah's" in the little pause after the first kick. That's just awesome.
Me: I can learn this easy. Me, a minute later: I never want to pick up a pair of sticks again.
Here is another one: ua-cam.com/video/hfj8zxGos10/v-deo.html
And one more for good measure: ua-cam.com/video/0A_ZdAI7-h4/v-deo.html (if ur only gonna listen to one pick this one its cool as fuck)
I like how he explained the pulse, and centering around the motion.
It's from the DVD Dennis Chambers: Why You Can't Play Like Me.
Destroyer. Master of drumsticks, a true God of drums. Long life my brother. embrace
Damião Amaro Lima Damião oo
The Lord Jesus Christ is the ONLY God.
One of the greatest legends alive!
I remember watching him jam with Mr.big's bassist Billy Sheehan.
He still rocks.
One of the top players of all time, groove, feel, and pocket.
Wow, Dennis Chambers is truly a great, inspiring musician. Or, if not a musician, a dude who hangs around with them.
How i freaking love this man

A DRUM BEAST
Dennis is the only drummer to ever turn down playing with Miles Davis ... he can swing like few others.

Ken Walden coz he cant sight read
@Usters B The perfect drummer for Miles (any time) would have been Peter Erskine. He can play ANYTHING and he read music as well.
Love that kick sound.
One of my favorites
love this groove, a classic
legendary groove 🔥🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Seriously? Do you research before you comment, he not only plays jazz on this DVD but has played with the buddy rich big band on many occasions, he IS indeed a master drummer.

A nice variation of this groove can be heard on the track "Southside" by CAB2
.
Thats groove baby😍❤️🥇🔥
This man is BOSS.
This guy is a beast
It ain't nothin' but the CLYDE
It's David Garibaldi that plays for Tower of Power but I think the groove is used on the song "Oakland Stroke"
looks to be K mastersounds..using two bottoms..with the sound edge,or sound wave on top.
Genius.
dennis still my best
Dennis does know theory! He counted 1&2&3&4&😅😍🥇
He actually did once at least on stage, the video is on UA-cam !
What is disappointing,do you want Dennis to hold your hands as he's playing?
sounds like cold sweat. very funky!
Sounds like he switches the beat from eights to quater notes on the hi-hat, but it is still there if you listen closely.
Killer groove
for dennis it is
This guy defies the law of physics.
Dennis, you are my favorite ve for Steve Gadd but you are unreal and have been since I was studying with Kim Plainfield along with frank Katz, he always said yeah vinnies great but Dennis is Bad
@johrie7 Dennis Chambers dosen't play on Tower of Power records, I think. It's David Garibaldi! :-)
you should try Mother Popcorn - James Brown
Rippled edge hi hats sound sweet...
@bluesborn i agree im going to get new skins soon and i hope i get that sound out of my kick
This is an example of what beats where used with James Brown ;)
@akrause2004 that's awesome!
@dennis chamber music hmmm good
that groove is in the groove essentials book by Tommy Igoe hahah
Chambers Played with Parliament Funkidelic!
Dennis Chambers lenda dá batera sou fã!

MERCI ? C'EST TROP GENIAL
i know that he doesn´t play on tower of power records but he played once on stage with them^^
Mad cool groove sounded better slower, understood it easier the faster it got. Its really not as hard to play this as the comments are reading, long as yo can play good ghost notes, its straight 4/4 its not.a polymeter r anything
Great Drummer!!

And he does all this without shewing gum!!!
Hi
He does open it once, but the other time, he's just accenting :-)
CAB2 - South Side
22 seconds into the video, I'm like: "Yeah, simple enough.."
Come the 23rd: "Daaaammnn" :|
who's the drummer he's talking about at the very end of the video please ? anyone knows ?
Drummers, who played with James Brown are Clyde Stubblefield and John "Jabo" Starks. Check them out)
Shit once that bass drum comes in, it's over with.
Damn how's he gonna speed it up like that. I had a tough enough time when he added the snare!!!
The more the speed gets increased the more u lose the groove imho. But Dennis remains a beast behind the kit
Agree, it sound better at a slower tempo
the guy is a friggin clock
his ghost notes are so tasty
It'sa me, Mario!
fuck yes
Sounds like "cold sweat" without the hi hat barks.
wow
nice but, are there any sheets?
found xD www.drummerworld.com/Videos/dennischambersfatback.html
This sounded better when he played it slower!
1 person realised he will never be able to play like Dennis Chambers
Could be just the hi hats he's using with the slight dent's purposely applied around the edge of the hats.
Black Mario can drum
Disappointing as a teacher. great show man and drummer.
Some guys aren't meant to teach, you can't blame them, they're made to play and amaze. Same goes with sports, if you're an amazing sporter, it doesn't mean you're a great coach. For them some skills come natural, that aren't for us, that's where the difference is.
Exactly, they shouldn't advertise themselves as teachers or clinicians at all.
People Who Can, Do. People Who Cannot, Teach. People Who Can'tTeach, Become Critic.
Thought it said "Fatblack groove lesson" lol
haaa James Brown... I got it lol
and when it reached 1:16 i really want to give up on drums already -.-
I hate when drummers do that kind of explanation, like: 2+2=4 then E=MC^2... Simple right?!
dennis subs for david with TOP sometimes (there are videos on youtube)
fyi, jazz is a umbrella term.. jazz drumming is anything improvisational ... its swing drumming that you are talking about which you have not explained clearly
Mother Popcorn- stolen...
did you listen till the end where he credits James browns music?
Sounded (felt) better at a (the first) slower tempo.
A "Master Drummer" can play just about ALL styles equally well (mastered). Ever hear Dennis play Jazz? I am referring to SWINGING a Ride Cymbal while "comping" the bass drum and snare drum.
"Master Drummer"
?
JB wouldn't be having any of that. He'd say, yeah the hi-hat is fine but what's the rest of it doin'? That ain't no groove. Get me Jabo or Clyde in here, shit.
ppl are like steve gadd is god, terry bozio is god, thomas lang is god but they are nothing compared to dennis chambers
