A little over a month after Hurricane Dorian wreaked devastation in his homeland of The Bahamas, Steven Gardiner lifted the spirits of his compatriots to climb sixth on the 400m all-time list with a rip-roaring victory.
The Bahamian, whose last one-lap defeat when completing a 400m race came when winning world silver at the 2017 World Championships, bided his time before unleashing a devastating burst of speed over the last 150 metres to blow away his rivals and set a national record 43.48.
Behind, Pan American champion Anthony Jose Zambrano lowered his personal best of 44.55 set in the heats to record a South American record of 44.15 for silver.
Fred Kerley, who recorded a time of 43.64 to win the US title in July, had to settle for bronze in 44.17.

Kirani James,, you are a hero you didn't get the win but your Mama was watching from the windows of heaven,,
God bless you
Hes gonna bounce back
Am Proud to be a Bahamian. Steven Gardiner you made us Proud.
What a run into the finish by Zambrano
look the semi-final. He did the same the last 80 mts
Now he is tokyo Olympic silver medalist
@@allrounder9579 that is his trademark.
🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸 great RUN Mr GARDINER
Gardiner has great composure and dignity on the track. He's also a first class athlete of the finest Calibre.
Proud to be from Caribbean which had five finalists
Six if you count in Zambrano, he is from the colombian caribbean coast.
Zambrano has the sickest kick ever! Haha. Always comes back in the end.
Many moons ago, the "Golden Girls" won gold in the women 4x100m and put 242 the Bahamas on the map, since then, the Bahamas have medal in many individual and relay events...Tonique Williams-Darling and Miller-Uibo Olympic women 400m, the men high jump, Olympic gold in the men's 4x400m, Derrick Atkins medals in the World Championships 100m, even I won silver in the 100m at the CAC games and now, my countryman Steve Gardner is continuing to keep the Bahamas on the track and field international map. And for all those Bahamian athletes that did not had a chance to win an international medal but still contributed to the sport to what it is today, thank you and 242 STRONG!!!
Anyone missing track season rn 😭?

I just realised Gardiner ran exactly the same time as Van Niekerk in 2015 WC. Same time and same fatigue, that's for sure!
3:44 is when it starts
Thanks
2years later, I still don't understand how Gardiner was able to win with such a large margin....Gardiner is a beast!!!
It’s pretty crazy that the 2022 world champions over 100m and 800m were both in this same race.
Kerley and Korir will never race again for sure. Kerley runs 100 and 200, Korir 800
Kerley looked like he thought he had silver in the bag and let Zambrano pass him at the tape.
It looks like he's still pushing...and he leans at the line. It looks like he struggles with lactic at the end of some of his races. I think if he increased his stride length that would decrease the amount of lactic.

Easily one of the best presentations for a championship yet. Can't wait to see what the presentation will be like in Tokyo in 2021
too bad it had the worst attendance. IAAF was stupid to take the event out of the summer and placing it in september when everyone had school or work. It couldve been a really spectacular WC.
This stadium was extremely well designed. Loved it... I love the bird's nest as well, very intricate design
unfortunately I'm not sure if we will see such a complex and attractive presentation in Tokyo
Nikerk 43.03
Norman 43.45
Gardiner 43.48
Kerley 43.64
James 43.74
Ross 43.85
Bloomfield 43.94
He was holding the pain. I'm glad he didn't passed out because he was so over tired. Greta race Bahamas and Colombia
I think Gardiner has a world record in him
Just finished running around my house and I’m tired so I applaud anyone who runs professionally 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Watching this for the first time, I'm very proud to be a Bahamian.
It’s always gonna be Steven hitting the woah for me 😭😭😭
Colombia 🇨🇴 Zambrano bestia! 👏 👏
Qué manera de alcanzar al estadounidense. Estaba entre los de atrás en los últimos 100.
Gardener so smooth, with Michael Johnson posture. A no-panic racing style. And Zambrano with the frantic closing power. Cool race. Hopefully Kirani James can recover from his bouts of illness and get back to full form; Graves’ disease is no joke. Amazing run under those circumstances.
Very good for Zambrano! 👏👏👏
Zambrano, such potential. Pan Am champion.
I am big fan of Steven Gardiner ♥️
And today Kerley ran 9.84 and got a silver medal in Tokio!
Also ran 9.79 in heats today
And became the world champion in the 100 meters
Happy for Gardiner , he won the silver in London 2017 , than improved his rank to gold in 2019 . He and Miller Uibo are the proud of Bahamians.🇧🇸👍
塗宜昆 they’re also training partners which is amazing
@@ronnieyoung2075 Right! Bahamas became stronger now
@@ronnieyoung2075 really? I didn't know, that's awesome 😂👍
塗宜昆 bro I’m gonna be honest with you. Gardiner won the gold because Michael Norman was injured and Wayde was absent and couldn’t defend his title. I don’t say that Gardiner isn’t good, he is very good he is one of the best but because the very best were absent he came first.
Only Without the presence of Michael norms
congratulations to our Bahamian King Steven Gardiner 🥇🥇
242 all day very proud to be a BAHAMIAN
The most V shaped torso I've seen
Pretty sweet introductions, and fantastic win by Gardiner. Looked so smooth the entire way.
This commentator is really good!
Extremely Good
The best
Praise about athletes

Yusuf Ismath why do you get to decide that?

Tokyo 2021 400m final will be legendary with Wayde van Niekerk, Michael Norman, Steven Gardiner, Fred Kerley and many more to reach their prime. Too bad not more people find the 400m as exciting as the 100 and 200
I find it more exciting..but not by much.
The 400 m is a much harder race to conquer as it requires more than just speed.
Niekirk was absent : couldn't qualify for final. Kerley chose to run 100meters and Mike 'Stormin ' Norman couldn't live up to all the American hype and had to settle for 5th FIFTH. STEVEN GARDINER from the Bahamas obliterated the field in Tokyo !!
@@dereckdean578 Gardiner is gonna dominate the 400m for the coming years if he stays healthy he's an amazing athlete and Norman........ he continues to disappoint me can't tell you how much cash I lost because of him.....
@@servantmonarch1532 The male and female 400 meters final was easy like Sunday morning for me.Here's why ......🇧🇸🌎🇧🇸
Felicidades Colombia, Zambrano es de talla mundial. 🇪🇨
Korir really tried considering kenya isnt a 400m specialist
the guy is an amazing athlete . . .
@@maponga01 too bad Kenya doesn't support its athletes.
After doing heats and semis in both 400m and 800m. Good job Korir. Kenya says ASANTE SANA
Kenya can dominate the 400m and the 4x400m
🇿🇦Wayde🇿🇦, please come back 🔙. You are surely the best.
Fred Kerley been sayin “#Phase42” for years and never gets close
He doesn't even run 400 anymore
@@speedstreak914 then maybe he should stop saying “#phase42”
@@phillipmoore6249 yeah that's what I mean.
Excellent race. My countryman you showed what you were good for. Kudos again and again.
And to think...Norman and Van Niekerk wasn't even there. Going to something fierce when they call come together.
Will they compete in Tokyo?
Our Bahamian. Excellent!
Gardiner makes it look so effortless.
I’ve ran almost all distances(up to half marathon) and 400m is the worst, it squeezes everything out of you.
At competitions, only for 400m I would get sensitive to light for about 30-120min after finishing.
Lilian nah 800 is the real deal
Lilian I always felt the 8 was the worst having run 400-5k in high school. The 8 always took a little more mental strength for me. After running a 62 sec lap knowing u gotta do it again sucks ass lol
800 is far more painful
I believe that if Gardenier worked on his last 50m he will go below 43:30. He practically shuts it down and ran so fast. What a battle it will be between Wayde, Gardenier and Norman for the Olympics next year
Norman's never hit the level of the other two.
@@zabaleta66 He has a better PB than Gardiner though, not to mention he's the youngest.
@@yennox5338 it's only by 3 one hundredths of a second though
This man is going to be dangerous! Can’t wait to see Norman ;the world record holder! And the rest of the crew in action!
mulonzee877 you think 🤔? It would be a mouth watering race to watch everyone at there best , the sad thing is I can’t even argue with you lol 😂
What a run ! Keeping this straight posture to run efficiently without fail til the end. Great attitude
An Aesthetic sprinter runner God's gift to the world. "Let us make man"
4:59 when Steven Gardiner does the woah
This race was such perfect patience. Last 200 enfuego!!!
One of d best bends I have ever seen ran
The bend was electric! He went into it about 1 meter down on Kerley, Cedenio and James but came off 3 meters ahead. The race was over after that!
Island Stylin ' After the Bahamian athlete initiated the Double Clutch , the rest of the field appeard to be running backwards . What a convincing and.somewhat humiliating win . Congrats to the youngColumbian athlete and USA for 2'nd and 3 'rd respectively. OUTSTANDING RUN MR. STEVEN GARDINER
It's a bird, it's a plane no it's The Bahamian opening another can of whoopass on the field once again.
@mulonzee877 ,true track n field fans know who the Gold belongs to in the women's final .
Gardiner resembles Shaunae Miller- Uibo to me and has kinda the same height 😂. Wonder if they're family?
Nigel Forrester I don’t see it lol 😂 maybe just height wise though, yeah but not looks
@@ronnieyoung2075 yes you are right, I kinda knew don't know y I said that. Thanks for your correction.
They’re best friends
Gardner has some steam tbf I wouldn't be surprised if he can get even faster
Dude makes it look effortless
ALL PARTICIPANTS IS SUPER ENERGY FULL, PRACTICE FULL, TECHNICAL FULL, STAMINA FULL, POWERFUL FULL AND STRONG FULL...................
IN THIS SITUATION WINER IS SUPER WONDERFUL...........
Crazy to think Fred is dominating the 100m now😅
No he's not, he's done exceptionally well but to say Fred is dominating is an overstatement.
Im happy Steven won Gold and good to see Kirani back.
That intro is dope🔥🔥🔥
🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸 THIS IS HOW STEVEN DO IT🏃♂️🇧🇸🙏✝️
USA give HOLY GOD thank at all times
Ok Wayde , Ok Mike , ..... come get some of THIS !!!
Keep your head up kerley. Congats to Gardiner 🇧🇸🙏❤
He stopped runniing with 5m to go!
Great coverage WORLD ATHLETICS!!
Very good race and time💪🔥🙏
400m is pretty much the only distance where you see people collapsse from exhaustion after the finish. Marathon, 10k, 5k etc they just keep on running like "oh, it's over already, no big deal, I'm good, I still have plenty of energy" lol...
He slowed down at the last 2 strides before finish. Could've shaved few more hundredths off the time.
Wonderful video and commentary. And a great race.
How is this a Commonwealth record if South Africa is in the Commonwealth?
It's a new Bahamian record for sure. Don't worry, Wayde will get his chance at Gardiner.
Probably meant Caribbean record
It means Championship record.
El continente Americano tiene los mejores corredores de 400 mts desde hace décadas! Todos en la Final sin importar de qué país son pertenecen a América
Great run my Caribbean friend .
Well done again Gardiner!
🇧🇸🏃🏿♂️💕✝️ GREAT RUN STEVEN GARDINER LET THE 🌎 WE HAVE MORE TO SEE 700 ISLANDS SUN AND BEAUTIFUL SEA🇧🇸🇧🇸🇧🇸
4.14,, the second, third an four in the same line, and Zambrano in 6 th place, he overpassed everybody en the last half
Could anyone tell me what music is played during the introduction of the athletes please?
Looked like 43.0 when he crosses the line
I’m curious... what is your 400m time? I’ll go first. 14yrs-55.3
That was very very quick 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I don't ever remember Gardiner running in the 4x400m relay....maybe I'm wrong or not paying attention?
Zambrano's comeback
Gardiner running likes Usain bolt ⚡.
Given South Africa is part of the Commonwealth, I can't see how Gardiner's can be a Commonwealth Record.
Wayde never participated in the Commonwealth games
@@talkaborit3320 He is still part of a Commonwealth nation. Gardiner's run was not part of the Commonwealth Games.
C'est dommage le symbole de la fédération est juste devant le chrono ...
Wow Zambano getting that silver was a hugeee upset he wasn’t even supposed to survive the semi finals
Congratulations Runners 😄
Start: 3:44
Thanks
✝️🙏🇧🇸 Steve let them know this is how we do it 😘
Kenya? Okay I can see them dominating this event in the future along with 400 meter hurdles
Can’t be a commonwealth record if South Africa is in the common wealth
No South African ever participated in a commonwealth 400m final
@@talkaborit3320 that’s not how it works. Is is this the common wealth final? No. It’s the world championship final. South Africa is in the common wealth. And the world record holder is south Afrivan, so he would have the Area record common wealth African etc
Eased up 10m from line. He could have been that much faster...
...and didn't lean at the finish!
nah he ran through the line. idk what type of blistering finish you were expecting to see in a 400

Kerley has got a lot of work to do to improve his kick.
Demish Gaye PB great job
More work needed on 100 meter technique
