- a commercial for The New England Aquarium. I believe this might be from the 70's. Thought I'd put it up in case anyone is interested, it's probably rare.
Those that remember this commercial often recall one for the Museum of Science in Boston, so here is a link provided by "jabroni33175" to that commercial from the MOS site:
www.mos.org/media_player_pop.p...
"I can walk like a penguin" - Classic! Every kid in New England quoted this commercial for years! Love it!
Every one of us, indeed.
I literally just did to my fiancé and proved it by bringing up this video. Some things you never forget.
For 30 years this sequence was on a loop in my head, popping up randomly at work or on my commute: "I can walk like a penguin they look like mirrors hey mom the dolphin show!" The sounds and images from this commercial are etched into my subconscious. During sex I'll often have my lady shout "Oh Daddy you have great surprises!"
The proper response being: How does that feel, Karen?
Hahahaha
Wonderful. I'm 45 and remember every word of that commercial. I took all four of my kids there whenever we visit Boston. Boston is always my home!
WOW, that commercial was so far ingrained in my brain, that it seems like I just saw it yesterday, and it's been over 30 years. The power of commercials.
Holy moly am I 7 again? Oh, no its just a 40 year old commercial! Thanks for sharing!
This was always playing on Channel 56 out of Boston well into the mid-80's...
Wait until someone posts old Willie Whistle clips...
@@michaelmemmelaar4937 I loved Willie Whistle! 🥰
Ugh...cannot comprehend the nostalgia overload.
Ohh the memories! This commercial was constantly on. I used to drive my sister crazy by saying, "I can walk like a penguin..." Thanks for posting this gem! It takes me back! Loved it! It was always on channel 56 out of Boston and if you were a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's in new england, channel 56 was the channel to watch. Banana Splits, Lost in Space, Three's Comapny, etc. Great commercial, great time in life, great memory! :) Thanks again!
This ad ran for so damn long!
I saw an ad for the aquarium on the Boston Globe's website and immediately thought of this commercial, and here it is! Funny that they haven't changed their logo. Thanks for posting, great find!
I was born in 78 and I remember this so vividly!!!! It played well into the early 80's! That place was so much cooler then than it is now. No more dolphin shows on the boat, the harbor seals are enclosed, the giant dolphin fountain in front is gone:( they kept the sculpture but placed it way infront of the new IMAX theater where noone sees it anymore!
Thank you for posting this!!!!!!
I lived in Cambridge, MA as a kid until I was 9. The surprising thing that hit me the most about this commercial is the total absence of the local accent. My recollection is that we all used to have wicked bad ones in Massachusetts before the Internet changed that and everyone started talking like most everyone else in the United States.
We moved to Arizona in late 1976 and I can't even begin to convey how much I was teased for that thick accent as a 4th grader displaced thousands of miles from home. It took years of hard work to get rid of it but now at nearly 57 years old I regret it (and I still miss home). Arizona is many things (blazing hot, dry as a popcorn fart, dusty, absent of most plant life or bodies of water or culture) but it has never been home. 😢
I also lived in Cambridge as a kid in the 70s. Grew up right outside of Central Square. We used to call it the coast back then. I went to the Morse school. What area did you grow up in? Cambridge has changed so much.
It's amazing how things stick with you.. I grew up in Acton, MA and saw this ad countless times... Now almost what, 30 years later, as soon as it started, I could instantly remember and mimic it.... "Walk like a penguin" is the classic, but "What a giant turtle!" is #2..
THANKS FOR POSTING!
That commercial aired on channels 4, 5, 7, 25, 38 and 56!
I remember it! What memories of Boston TV I have!
My brothers and I STILL say "I can walk like a penguin." Someone has to have the one with our follow-up line, "What makes an ocean wave wave?"
Museum of Science… Where It’s Fun To Find Out. 😆
The trumpets in this used to weird me out when I was 4 and watching Casper. Sometimes I get this song in my head when I'm doing the dishes.
I saw this commercial hundreds of times between the late 70's and early to mid 80's but haven't seen it since, yet I remember it like I saw it yesterday!
Thanks so much for posting this! So many great memories...Cant believe I knew each line after 30 years!
I just found this, it flooded my memories. Great stuff
It's funny, just went to look for this and found it right off. Thanks for putting this up! I've been using this line, since (yes, you're right) the 70s. Brings back memories.
I remember that, crazy
God that brings back memories. As I watched the video I could almost recite the commerical line by line... shows you how much they showed that commercial, or how much I watched TV!!
Webmaster for New England Aquarium weighing in here. Thanks for posting this--what a hoot! We've got a bunch of folks here looking at it and trying to narrow down when it first aired. Looks early-80s to us so far, based on the plaza configuration and the exhibits shown. Not to mention the cheezy music and retro clothes and haircuts. Might put it up on our site and invite people to guess on dating it. Thanks for turning it up!
did no one know what a webmaster was 17 yrs ago? can hardly believe this wasn't replied to or upvoted
Lol, well, I can almost guarantee this commercial was before 1980. I know the famous Museum of Science commercial was 1977, so I'm guessing this one is right around there also.
This was the late 70's.
This got played heavily on WSBK and WLVI out of Boston during the 70's and 80's, along with the Museum Of Science commercial that most everyone knows("This is the captain speaking, come in earth!"). There was ANOTHER ONE that got played frequently around the same time, and no one has it! I'm pretty sure it was related to MOS; it had no commentary and lots of synths/outer space sound effects. It showed silver balls on tracks along with celestial images. The two previously mentioned Boston stations definitely played it. Does anyone else remember this commercial?
Awesome, I woke up today and for some reason "I can walk like a penguin" popped into my head. I came right down stairs and looked this up. Ah, I miss being a child in the 80s and I miss Mass lol. Thanks for post this up!
Growing up in Rhode Island in the 80s we used to watch all the Boston stations channel 25 channel 38 and of course wlvi 56 after school cartoons right into the Brady Bunch and then Three's Company I had a 20-in black and white TV in my room with a coat hanger for an antenna and saw these commercials everyday for nearly 10 years! As well as the Boston museum of science commercial "where it's fun to find out what makes an ocean wave wave!" I swear to God somebody should invent a nostalgia streaming service that focuses on different regions of the country and show the old lineups including the commercials and PSAs everyone in their forties to fifties will want to watch!
Thanks for this! They aired this constantly during afternoon cartoons on Boston stations in the early '80s.
OMG!! That one took me back. I remember this spot word for word. Amazing. Thank you so much for posting.
LOL, at first I couldn't remember if this was late 70s or early 80s, but then I saw the mother's Dorothy Hamill haircut; and I knew ;)
Great post, thanks!
I recall watching this in the 80's -- that dorky, "I can walk like a Penguin!" Ack!!! It's all coming back to me now!!!
"Where Spaggs is next to Lizer. Left on Spitbrook. Right on Daniel Webster."
Jordan's Furniture!
Etched into my soul. They got a lot of milage out of this commercial. Now on to find the alien guy learning about the food pyramid.
Good God, I'm old.
Totally tubular to the max!
xoxo
The Clarences
Thanks for posting that, I had been thinking of going to the new england aquarium soon and it reminded me of this commerial, hopefully someone will post the museum of science commercial too. It's fun to find out what your voice really sounds like.
Googled "Boston aquarium I can walk like a penguin" to show my much younger girlfriend and this came up first. Love that you posted this and I could show her why "I can walk like a penguin 🐧"
Nice post. Used to see this all the time growing up in South Weymouth in the 70s.
That was for Boston's Museum of Science but no one's posted it yet. Someone's GOT to have it, it was also on for years!
Worked for the new england aquarium last summer as well. Out in the reef the wee outdoor cafe. Whata place!
I just turned into the 7 year old that longed to go to the New England Aquarium again!
Yes!! "I can walk like a penguin!" I'm so glad to know I'm not the only nutcase that still says that...25 years later!
Wow, does this commercial bring back memories from way way back, hah
I always remembered the commercial ending with "The New England Aqarium, where it's fun to find out!". I wonder if they kept the commercial for years, but changed the bumper slogan at the end? Ahwell.
Growing up in the Boston area in the 1970s, I probably saw that commercial a thousand times.
Made me smile! Nice memories!!!
I went on a school field trip here in the mid-70's & saw Hoover the talking seal.
HOOVER!
Great memories!
I remember this!! So awesome reminds me of when I was a kid!!
Me too. The drawings of the sharks on the wall freaked me out as well.
I CAN WALK LIKE A PENGUIN:KAREN
Wow! Now I can finally explain why I sometimes say "I can walk like a pengiun"!
I haven't seen this thing in years and it brought back tons of memories of TV as a kid, and also visits to the Aquarium. If memory serves me, they no longer have a dolphin show. It's sea lions I believe.
To this day I still say "I can walk like a penguin!!"
Me too!!!!
I remember this commercial...
I remember this ad.
OMG i remember this!!!!!!! flood of memories, i think i need to lay down now.
i was just there this past October
I remember this ad and going there about 1977. They had an open shark tank and signs telling you not to throw coins into the tank. Coins = metal dissolved in water = bad for sea life.
New England Aquarium rocks!
everytime any of my friends and I see a penguin to this day --- we still say "I can walk like a penguin!" It was such a lame and funny line then and still is !!!
CLASSIC
I saw this commercial all the time when I was young (born in ‘73) and OMG we ALL wanted to smack ‘Penguin Kid’ up the side of the head. 😆
This was on tv a billion times
OMG - I was totally able to quote the whole thing as it played. That thing must have been buried deep in my subconscious.
Does anyone remember the "I'm from Mahhhs and I eat lots of canday bahhhs" commercial? It was a local PSA in the Boston area around the late 70s. A true classic (in my mind, at least) but I've yet to dig up a reference to it... I'd love to see it again though.
I remember this. Especially the synthesized trumpet music and the kid going "I can walk like a penguin". So funny!
I am married to the girl in this video. Just a fun fact
Can she still walk like a penguin?
Does she ever say to you, "oh daddy you have great surprises!" ?
Jay Bennie boy for real? Does she know how loved the penguin line is?
"How does that feel, Karen?"
"Oh daddy, you have great surprises!"
Very nice Anthony!
I love how the mother and the son have the same exact haircut.
LOL!
Jordan's Furniture anybody? - "Pack ya bags, youre goin' for a ride!"
I remember this when I was a kid in the 80s
'i can walk like a penguin'....you will when I get through with you ! 😂
I remember that commercial when I was little, I bet them kids are big now
Reminds me of the day i got Pengy!
Our Class is in the Audience. We did our class trip from Maine They told us they were filming for a commercial. Very bright lights. I have photos of it someplace. We can be seen here 0:24
I am not the only one who remembers this on WLVI 56 outta Boston. I grew up in East Providence and 56 was the only decent UHF station around other than WSBK 38. Anyone know what happened to Uncle Dale?
"Neato look at that!"
I remember this commercial from the late 70's!
omg. i knew almost all of the words by heart.
GREAT memories!
Awesome. Definitely one of my favorite childhood commercials.
I analyzed how this commercial promotes racism for a grad paper and got an A... Not to mention the frames from 8-11 seconds are centered on the woman's breasts.
I was there since the late 1980's-mid 1990's when I was younger.
nice to hear, you're very welcome.
They do have sharks in the big tank but not the kinds of sharks that are really dangerous.
They did have a hammerhead shark a long time ago but eventually the hammerhead got old and died.
man, i remember that one
my favorite attraction in new England is the aquarium
HEY!! I REMEMBER THAT COMMERCIAL!!!
I can walk like a penguin....omg i havent heard that in AGES ..lol
wow no problem, glad you liked it. If you (or anyone else?) remembers seeing this ad and can date it let me know, I'm curious.
That is the first thing thousands of kids around New England think of when they hear of that aquarium.
awesome field-trip place for any eastern-Mass-er!!
Yuppa... Much like the Museum of Science, its changed....alot.
Sad to say that they haven't exactly maintained the NE-Aquarium, I think the last time they cleaned it was 1978!
I remember going there on a school field trip. I think it was $15.00 to get in. God only knows how much it costs now.
I hope that penguin girl got the special help and education she needed.
I found the vintage Museum of Science 70's ad you people were looking for! Go to mos dot org. Then vistior info/about the museum/history of the museum. the vid is on the bottom right of the page. Someone should upload that to youtube.
such an ad would not be allowed anymore
"How does that feel, Karen?"
"Oh daddy, you have great surprises!"
No wonder why she walked like a penguin after that.
No wonder why she walked like a penguin 😂
ME TOO!!!!!! Memories!!!!! Wow
Hey Mom, the dolphin SHOP, always sounded like the kid said that. ha ha
I still say the son sounds like he says "Hey Mom the dolphin SHOP", gotta be that Massachusetts accent. :)
If I were asked "What commercial from your childhood do you remember best?" it would be this commercial.
I say that all the time as well and only a few people I grew up with know what I am talking about.
*Horn flourish*
I can walk like a penguin!
