Very interesting review of this part of Eastern Europe. I was a little surprised at the time duration for this journey until you revealed the border crossing delays encountered. The interior of the carriages of this train showed quite a kaleidoscope of decor and facilities, some of which could go down well here in Australia. You did well with the seat in which you travelled. Looks almost regal class! Thanks again for revealing a little known part of the world to me. Looking forward to next week's offering.
Nice ride into Romania! Indeed we have problems with catering and such because when CFR had restaurant cars, the items of food and drink were expensive so most people avoided them and brought their own things onto the train! That pentium label should give you an idea how old these cars are :)) cfr have built in the past 2-3 years some amezing coaches (blueprints from French Rail) but for other Romanian routs! if you plan on doing other Romanian trips in the future, i’d recomend you go further from Timisoara to Bucharest to see stunning scenes as the train goes next to the Danube for 1h and some other amezing sites or chech trains routs that go through the mountains, you’ll love them! Cheers!
Wow, the Budapest station was stunning! I'm with you, Dylan -- I'm shocked that a 16-hour long train journey would have no catering option and no couchette coach or sleeper. Thanks for taking us along, Dylan. See you next video!
I travelled from Vienna to Bucharest 3 years ago. At the Romanian border a restaurant car was added and it was the best train meal ever. Freshly cooked chicken with salad and a great selection of beer! But it was slow, very very slow!
Budapest station looks great. Too bad you didn't have enough time to explore the shops and restaurants. Hungarian food is superb, been eating it most of my 74 years! The other half of my ancestry is proud of the liquid refreshments from Scotland. Can't even think about trying haggis, ewww.
Thank you, a very interesting video. I had planned a journey from Frankfurt to Varna (on the Black Sea), with short stays at Nuremberg, Bratislava, Budapest, Timisoara, Bucharest and Varna. So this video was particularly interesting to me.
The enormous arch of the Budapest East station was very impressive. This seemed to be a pleasant journey across the flat Hungarian plains and in a mostly unfilled, quiet car (until the conductor came in to play loud music on his radio. I never heard of such a thing . At least it makes the trip unique). They need to fix that food situation for a 16 hour trip.
Love your clips. CFR has only 2 restaurant cars if you can believe it None of them goes out of the country. And there are no couchettes during the day Hope u ll post more clips from Romania
Great video Dylan - thanks. Keleti Station sure is beautiful - I think the grandeur of the train hall is partly due to it not covering many tracks - the verticality of it makes it like a real cathedral of railways! I love the retro feel of the first class carriage and the armchair seats look so comfortable. The curtain material with the railway logo is special too. Just a shame about the catering, but one can be prepared for that as you say.
Good to see you at this part of the world. :-) Budapest to Békéscsaba were my weekly transport route for decades. Unfortunate that route were renewed few years ago and capable of 160km/h, the trains still not enabled to run at full speed. As you mentioned the hungarian carriage is quite modern. That is a good feeback from a travel enthousiastic like you. :-) The Hungarian goverment decided several years ago to bring the manufacturing, planning of the carriages back to Hungary to replace the old IC carriages. After several years of iteration, licensing, the IC+ carriages family are ready with several arrangements (1st, 2nd class, bistro, restaurant, 1+ premium, mixed 1st and 2nd) already running on hungarian and international routes. 20 + 35 cars are already running, another 35 are under construction and a controller car is under development (think am OBB Railjet style controller car ;-)).
Keep up the good work, Dylan. And enjoy the old comfy armchairs while you can. Soon you'll be able to find them on heritage railways. I've been a dedicated user of international (Germany to UK and back) rail travel, it's still the best way to travel within Europe.
Another delightful and informative video, thank you. But I repeat my request to you Dylan for a review of the Trans Siberian Express at some point in the future.
Dylan, it was great to see you're making reviews in our country, visit Hungary more frequently! :) For the next time, I suggest you trying IC407 Corona from Budapest to Brasov with Hungarian - currently ex-WSBA - couchettes, sleepers and dining car or EN462 Kálmán Imre from Budapest to München/Zürich with CAF couchettes and sleepers (and dining car, once COVID-state gets better).
During the war in Jugoslavia I travelled from Buchuresti Nord to Timisoara and back, on the way up there was a restaurant in the train with good quality on everything but going back there was nothing to be had at all. Going north I also met a woman of 20 who was studying to get a dentist at the university in Buchurest and when talking to me it was the first time she used her English "sharp", she left the train in Orsova and after that a ten year old girl had to try her luck with English to the man in the corner very cute.
Hi Dylan - I enjoyed your insight into this Hungarian/Romanian hybrid train. The architecture of Budapest East reminded me of the Gare du Nord in Paris in the 1970s. Interestingly, your footage included a glimpse of an ex-SNCF “fraise/vanille” DMU unit on the right as you pulled into Timisoara. I was surprised to see it - I thought they’d all been scrapped! They used to ply the route between Paris & Boulogne Hoverport in the 70s/80s. Back on topic - I’d love to do this journey, but I’d go through to Bucharest. Stay safe.
Ohh you did this here ,too !! Lol. I missed this one ! Sorry ! I'm planning to visit Budapest this summer after visiting Wales & England ,possibly Italy !!! Budapest is gorgeous !!! 😍 👍👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🚈💕💞

Great trip, great seat, and great landscape. I think border check make the trip bit longer but feel the difference between the Domestic trip or Schengen trip. Really appreciate that you added the subtitle in this video.
We did this same journey in 2017 through to Bucharest and the lack of catering was a surprise to us but a guy got on the train with a basket full of sandwiches and drinks about seven hours into the journey that was a godsend. Would not do it again. 👍👍🇦🇺
I think I noticed a couple of ex-SNCF Autorails, still in their original red and off-white livery as you pulled in at the end of your journey. A little taste of home for me!!
Another great video but the train, not so much. I'm glad the seats were comfortable but the rest of the train and staff were a bit below par in my view. Still, I do love exploring so keep 'em coming!
I just watched an old TV movie ' Windmills of God ' Jaclyn Smith & Robert Wagner are in .Such a good movie for free on Y.T.( part 1 & 2 ) and filmed in Romania !! I'd love to go to Eastern European countries someday soon !!! Fascinating countries & people !!! 👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🚈💕💞
Beautiful station in Budapest! The train was quite empty so I assume the border crossing would take a lot longer at a non-covid time. And I’m not sure that the toilet review was reassuring if you can say “I’ve seen worse”!
The way you pronounce Lőkösháza resembles Lukácsháza, which is not fully a border town, there are 2 villages between it and the border, but it’s by the Austrian border. Just an interesting info. As an English speaker, you of course butcher all the foreign names, but I’m proud of you for trying your best!
Lucky you haved one of the best CFR class 1. Rest of the wagons are in a such poor condition like the national Romanian company...i hope you enjoyed in Romania.
Catch 22. Train catering is pricier than supermarkets, so folk bring their own unless they want a full meal mid-trip. Fewer drink and snack sales mean the price goes up or catering vanishes. Even station shops, pricey by shop standards, undercut train catering. Behind some station shop chains lurketh a rail operator, however.
This was an interesting journey Dylan. I'll don't think it'll be on my list. Your seats were gorgeous, the rest of the train, not so much. The price was good, but considering lack of food & an hour lost for Visa check (which I understand), I don't think it's for me. Lucky that you are young, healthy & brave. Me, not so much. Stay safe. I'll be watching.
The price surprised me, being American sounds like a bargain. Would be amazing to have European style rail service here. Fantastic way to travel. My Daddy worked for railroad till the mid 60's. One perk free rail travel, the best of times.
"Ancient Pentium laptops" -- yikes, I can remember when Pentium was the last word in modernity -- I guess I'm pretty ancient now! But definitely a fascinating journey, I'm sorry I never got to see that spectacular station in Budapest when I was there (arrived by air, left by cruise).

@@DylansTravelReports Oh...you do. I mean, I knew that you're a Brit. It's just that, at the start of this vid, you referred to your apartment in Budapest, so...
