She really laid it all out there that night - I think this was the only (?) time in her career that she went for a 7-triple program, and with a Hail Mary 3/3 attempt way at the end as well. She held nothing back. But jumps aside, for me it was all about the elegant simplicity in her skating and her artistry. I'm so glad the judges recognized it and gave her the respectable marks even if she wasn't favored to win a medal.
@Man Sang Woo Yes!!!! Her "The Last Emperor" 94-95 season free program is one of the greatest ever in figure skating history. Choreographed by the great Toller Cranston (you can see it was his style!) but it was still Lu Chen skating and portraying it with her soul!
@@mayloo2137 and an incredible, hilarious, but knowledgeable commentator and critic. He had so much insight, and he was spot on with his observations. He was true to himself and in his commentating. He is missed.
Still the most beautiful free program ever.. Such elegance, such musicality and such a stunning choreo. Beautiful music too. Wonderful to see it again, still love it.
It's nice to see brilliant artistry rewarded in the marks. Often in a performance that was not technically superior (and she had several problems here) the judges would unfairly penalize the athlete on the artistic mark as well. Here they got it right.
Totally right! These days, nobody would ever do a 3T3T at the end of a program other than an improvisation. But, looking at this skate this many years later and the emotion and the lines she creates -- whole-heartedly deserved that second bronze.
The music, Butterfly Lover is almost the first orchestra every Chinese has listened in our life. She must have been under tons of pressure. Despite minor imperfection, this is still my favorite free skating!
I almost cry to see her Chinese dance( figure skatting) of soul with Chinese song. What a beautiful lady!... from India. N. B: I have seen all her interviews. All wish for you lady Lu... You are our Asian heroine.
Her performance was great, but even though it's not my favorite performance by a figure skater, I will go so far to say that no figure skater has ever reached this level of physical beauty as Lu Chen was during this performance. Her beauty is breathtaking.
I totally feel you on this comment! Thank you for pointing this out. I have always thought she had probably the most natural classically elegant beauty I've ever seen for a female figure skater. She personified what it meant to be both athletic and elegant and she always looked so buttoned up down to every hair being in place. What a wonderful career she had. She broke so many barriers.
It was funny and interesting that at her very last amateur competition, she went for the triple-triple combination (and very late in her program) because earlier in her career, she did have it listed in her content to be attempted but she never ended up going for it and just made the second jump as a double. She was really brave in Nagano and clearly inspired.
I agree - she skated to the music from the movie "the last emperor?" I believe that the late Cdn skater Toller Cranston helped with the choreography. I remember him saying, when he was doing commentary worked for Cdn Tv, that the future of figure skating would become nothing but a competition of jumps, with the artistry lagging behind. In my opinion, he was right.
I remember Lu Chen (or Chen Lu) skating to "Butterfly Lovers" in the Olympics. It was the first time that I heard that music, and the music stayed with me. I'd really like to see an ice dancing couple skate to this music. Karen Chen of the USA skated to "Butterfly Lovers" as her long program for the figure skating team competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. Here she is skating that same program at the US Nationals a month earlier. ua-cam.com/video/4P2B7r0YORA/v-deo.html
Me! As soon as Karen started I recognized the music, the first time I heard it was when Lu skated and I thought it was so pretty. They’re both lovely skaters💜
They awared an over excited jumping bean who's prgram was not even memorable over Kwan and this masterpiece. When was the last time the olympic figure skating judges got anything right.
You got my upvote for “overexcited jumping bean” Tara has always struck me as very immature. I won’t watch anything that she commentates on because she’s so obnoxious. Lu Chen and Michelle Kwan were amazing artists and they got passed over for a jumping bean novelty. And they wonder why skating has lost so much popularity.
CORRECTION: Lu Lu was ranked 25th, not 26th. Not shown here, but in the American clip, it showed Lu Lu in a graceful knee bow to her NEW coach, whom helped her pull through her previous catastrophic year.
Beautiful artistry, maybe even better than Kwan, but watching this again...Slutskaya was a much cleaner skater in terms of the jump landings and a better spinner too.
At this Olympics, Chen was not recognized for his technique, but for his artistry! Above all, there is drama in this butterflylovers! She was World Champion in 1995 and In 1996, it seemed as if she was the world champion again. But Michel Kwan stopped her and Chen ended up with a silver medal. The next year, she burned out, her results slumped, she gained a lot of weight, and she was even dropped from the national team. But she did not give up. She went on a diet, changed coaches, and trained harder than ever. Through all of this, she returned to the Olympic stage. She may not have been perfect, but she gave a performance that showed people her passion. She got the recognition she rightfully deserved!
6.0 era focused more on artistic expression than jumps, that is why Baiul won gold medal at the 1994 Olympics. More famous athlete in that period Michelle kwan's jumps had more problems by today's standards.
This has to be one of the most beautiful programs ever, the artistry, the emotion she brought, the grace, it’s a stunning program.
Not as good as Yuna Kim's Send In The Clowns.

Love your comment and totally agree -- just came here to say this!
So beautiful. Gorgeous artistry, strength yet delicate and a beauty for the ages.
今見ても衣装が素敵。この時リアルタイムで見ていて感動したのを覚えています。
She has always been one of my favorite skaters. She skates with so much elegance. I'm glad that she has gone on to coach.
Back in 98 Nagano and today, I still would give Lu Chen a 6.0 in artistic impression, and being number one in artistry for the ladies event.
@Man Sang Woo Yes!!!! Her "The Last Emperor" 94-95 season free program is one of the greatest ever in figure skating history. Choreographed by the great Toller Cranston (you can see it was his style!) but it was still Lu Chen skating and portraying it with her soul!
96 worlds LP is a true masterpiece. Never seen anyone surpass that rach2 program in terms of artistry.
@@alexsdb9712 as a Canadian, I miss the flamboyant Toller Cranston. He was known for his paintings after he retired from figure skating. RIP 🙏

Not only a great ice skater but also a great story teller. Love the butterfly lover's story.
This is the most beautiful and touching moment I've ever seen in figure skating. Lu Chen is in a class of her own in terms of artistry and elegance.
One of the best skaters ever!!!
The attempted 3toe-3toe at the end was insane. Must have been improvised. Glad she didn't fall. It would have dampened the overall emotional impact.

It was gutsy, but I remember a "fluff piece" that showed her training it earlier in the season. She really fought for this program.

@@jacksonnadar2647 Yes, Sandra Bezic
I forgot how that last 3T/3T was basically completed on the ice. LOL. She snuck that foot around. Ah, the good old days. :-)
She probably didn't train for it and just did it anyway! 🤣🤣

Her 96 worlds performances are the icing on her career cake. I was thrilled for this finish but she did have a few near misses...great skater!

That “overexcited jumping bean” landed a 3L+3L, the hardest jumping combination in the competition.
At the end of the day, we still remember Kwan's Masterpiece SP and FS and Lulu's Butterfly Lovers Programs

The "overexcited jumping bean" was a very small size then; ergo easier for her to land those jumps.
But the jumping bean landed her jumps perfectly!
