The event is mainly 15th century Wars of the Roses but they do allow groups from earlier medieval periods such as ourselves, which cover mid-14th to early 15th.
There are quite a few medieval re-enactment battles in England that have 40 - 50 archers on each side. In France the best one I know is run by the Azincourt Alliance and takes place each July on the actual battlefield at Agincourt. In 2015, on the 600th anniversary of the battle, we are hoping to field 1,000 archers all shooting at the same time! For details do an online search for Azincourt Alliance 2015.
@PSPmaster321 The archers are shooting arrows with rubber blunts on the end of the shaft instead of metal heads. They also use low poundage bows. The archers have to shoot high in the air so the arrows fall directly down, and all the troops on the opposite side have to wear helmets as protection from the impacts. Occasionally the archers will be allowed to flat shoot into the 'enemy', but only by prior arrangement and only at guys with visors down and wearing armour or padded jacks. Great fun!
Beautifull! This is my dream to be involved in such event/society. Currently im into making bows, and every next one seems to look, and whats more important, work as an actual ELB. Just about to finish tillering my Elm LB, and it exceded my expectations, as it is about 75-80 pound draw weight.
ProtossImba What species of Elm? I've built a few sinew backed bows from slippery elm but never a longbow. I usually stick with wood that has a high SG like Osage
The bows were made by many different bowyers and bought directly from them. If you are thinking of having one made I can send you some links to their sites if you would like? A heavy draw weight warbow of the type we use would cost around £850 (approx. $1300).
I did the damage trying to get a very stubborn 110lb laminate bow to full draw, but I also put it under a lot of stress in the gym which didn't help. It would have been OK if I had rested the joint whenever it hurt, but I had a lot of shoots and demos to do that year so I shot through the pain and that's what did the damage. Yes the lowest I would call a warbow is around 80 - 90lbs.
Hello Greg. Nice to hear from you mate and I am glad you enjoy what we do. If you ever find yourself at one of our events then please feel free to come up and have a chat. Best wishes, Nick
Yes they seem to as our group is 14th/early 15th century. We don't take part in the main battle displays, so it doesn't matter that we are not Wars of the Roses.
Hi Nick, it'd be great if you could put together a video of your clothing as I'd love to get a closer look so I can try making some of my own. In particular the St George cross tabard, your liripipe hood and coif. Hope I've got those names correct! Cheers G
Gareth Wood Hi Gareth. Are you on Facebook? If so take a look at my group The Free Company of Aquitaine. We have a photo album dedicated to our kit. I'm on Facebook far more often than UA-cam these days.
No I'm afraid I do not. All the straw targets we use are bought from archery suppliers. They're not cheap that's for sure! My guess is the straw is bound in a long sheath and then coiled and glued/bound in place. They are very dense and very heavy. Whether they are made by hand or machine I don't know either. Sorry to be so vague.
It's not, though I agree that it looks at some points like the belly is lighter than the back in the video, but I use the same bow throughout the video and in other shots you can just make out that the belly is the darker heartwood. Good question though and thanks for posting.
im a lefty warbow archer :) thats what actually got me more into traditional archery. left handed people get the shaft (pun intended) when it comes to archery products. so ive always shot off the hand. and i like the challenge and making my own arrows and heads. from a survival standpoint ill never be unable to hunt so long as i can find materials to make a bow. brum i would suggest taking suppliments from youngevity. it helped my friends knees heal when docs said he wouldnt. trust me.
Yes there aren't many lefties but I'm not one by choice. I am right handed but years of pulling heavy bows has destroyed my left elbow, so the only way I could continue to shoot was to change arms. Unfortunately my right elbow is now begining to go the same way so my time as a heavy bow shooter is coming to an end I feel. :(
Although many of the guys do a little gym work to help them, it is more down to good technique. It's difficult to explain in words alone but we believe they bent their leading leg at the knee and lent against the bow, in the same way as you would lean against a wall, as they drew the string back. This starts the bow bending with your bodyweight alone and stops your bow arm collapsing in under the strain.
@lpilk2007 There probably are but I don't know of any. If you take a look at sites such as the Medieval Siege Society they usually publish a list of events. There is always a big English Heritage event at Battle in East Sussex commemorating the Battle of Hastings in October and I am giving a display with a few of the lads in this video at Waltham Abbey on the 8th October, but things begin to go quiet now until next May.
Most of my clothing was hand made for me by a friend who is an expert on medieval fashions, but the other guys are wearing some stuff they made and other items they bought off suppliers at re-enactment fairs.
@Mububban23 Ha, ha, yeah Luke certainly was giving it his all. He only took delivery of the bow a week before the event so he was still trying to get used to it. Give him a month or two and he will have it all the way back I'm sure.
Nice video! Can you explain what the archers are firing at 7:40? I'm sure it can't be real arrows due to there being people on the range in front of them!
Mate you have done a cracking job with this video as always. It was great shooting with you there at Hurstmonceux and I look forward to shooting with you very soon. Cheers Ben Barebow Archery barebowarchery.co.uk
After buying tools, setting up a workshop, learning to tiller (making three or four bows that break or shoot like dogs) and buying yew warbow staves at 200+ dollars a piece (or waiting a year to season your staves if you have your own yew), plus 50 for string material, 20 for horn, and it still won't be as good as one made by somebody who has made 100+ warbows, 1300 dollars starts to look like a very fair price for a 100 pound bow.
@prohumanbeing Yeah sure, no problem. All the music used in my recent videos is obtained from the Soundclick website. The name of the song and the artist is listed in the end credits. Best wishes.
Sorry to hear this. What weight were you pulling? I want to shoot warbows, but I'm worried about precisely these sorts of issues. I'm going to move up in poundage pretty gradually, I think, and I'd be content shooting the lowest of poundages that are still considered warbows. Am I correct in thinking this is around 80-90 lbs?
I don't know any US bowyers Ken, but in the UK you could try Ben Perkins at www.barebowarchery.co.uk. He will probably ship to the States. Let him know I gave you his name please, and he will look after you.
1300 dollars? My god, you can build one yourself (and have a lot of fun getting to that point) for much less. Though I guess with a yew bow the staves themselves will be expensive no matter what unless you happen to have some land with yew trees on it.
I was lucky. I found this crumpled in a forgotten corner of a stall at a reenactor's trade show back in 2004. I have never seen one like it since. I think your best bet would be to make your own.
I love the old arts , but , I was getting ... well ..uncomfortable around the 5 minute mark . I mean medieval archers weren't a bunch of benders ! That... 'musak' ?..jeeez Archers are Rammstein not pan-pipes ....
EZ to wish for the old days when you the have safety of new days. most people didn't live passed 40 from simple cold or any disease or cut not to mention what bad teeth and tooth ache did to you.oh yeah and that thing called hunger.
THANK U ENJOYED THE SHOW. HAVE FUN GARE
Fantastic video, Nick, as always. I appreciate the work you've obviously put into it, and I admire your dedication.
The event is mainly 15th century Wars of the Roses but they do allow groups from earlier medieval periods such as ourselves, which cover mid-14th to early 15th.
excellent setting, and re-enactment sure take you back in time!

there was no problem with the video quality at all, dude. it was awesome! and you guys were terrific.
thank you for sharing the video. :-)
really big fan of you and am getting a 100lb warbow from rudder bows in a month and am looking forward to more videos of your splendid videos!

Your videos keep getting better and better, great work guys.
And that's one heck of an "effort face" at 6:05 :-)
Yes it is a great show and we shall be there from August 24th - 26th giving our warbow display and chatting to the public.
Hey bud, I enjoy your videos... especially this one. This must have been a blast!
Svělé a důstojné video nádherná hudba díky.

@bigbowbrum Thanks for the reply! It does look like a lot of fun, I will have to attend such an event one day!
Really well-put together video, keep it up!

Love the scenery, Video is not too bad. thank Nick
These days they are typically between 79" and 84" though in the medieval period we believe they were generally a little shorter.

@DisillusionedAcronym Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated.

Drawing a 140 lb Bow is the same as picking up a 10 stone man with one hand!
Are there any more medieval festivals left this year before the dreaded winter arrives?
You too are a lefty like me :)
archery needs more leftys
And PLEASE. where can I find/ buy the great music in these videos? Post or message me please fair gents.
@prohumanbeing Yeah sure, no problem. All the music used in my recent videos is obtained from the Soundclick website. The name of the song and the artist is listed in the end credits. Best wishes.
I think they just looked around on the internet and found some free ones there.
so when is this festival on next?i wouldnt mind going
@LeiJamie I'm sorry to hear that.
The festival takes place on the August bank holiday each year (25th - 27th Aug). For more details see "mgel dot com".
Sorry to hear this. What weight were you pulling? I want to shoot warbows, but I'm worried about precisely these sorts of issues. I'm going to move up in poundage pretty gradually, I think, and I'd be content shooting the lowest of poundages that are still considered warbows. Am I correct in thinking this is around 80-90 lbs?
ok will do thanks
Are there any events where you see 50 or more Longbows firing at the same time?
In England or even in central Europe?
@prohumanbeing you can hear the music on runescape XD
at 3:03 why is the yew warbow sapwood on the belly of the bow?
Yes that's correct.
Lol medieval fair where everything is like in the medieval days....eating a hamburger with a coca cola
@prohumanbeing You would be very welcome to shoot with us anytime.
It was tail life !
It seems odd to refer to the "poundage" of any of these bows, seeing as how only America uses pounds.
What is the music reminds me of the christions song words from 80s
Hi Kevin. It's called 'Women of Ireland' by Ethereus.
do they allow 100 year war
Wow
are all these warbows you shot 100lb and higher?
Can you recommend someone to build me a self bow
I don't know any US bowyers Ken, but in the UK you could try Ben Perkins at www.barebowarchery.co.uk. He will probably ship to the States. Let him know I gave you his name please, and he will look after you.
how do you work up to a bow that heavy?
1300 dollars? My god, you can build one yourself (and have a lot of fun getting to that point) for much less. Though I guess with a yew bow the staves themselves will be expensive no matter what unless you happen to have some land with yew trees on it.
They are English weights and haven't yet died out in everyday usage
How tall/long is the average warbow?
The over tunic(i'm not sure of its true name, Tabard, surcoat? ) with the red cross where can you find one to buy?
I was lucky. I found this crumpled in a forgotten corner of a stall at a reenactor's trade show back in 2004. I have never seen one like it since. I think your best bet would be to make your own.

GOOD POINT WITHOUT ANTIBIOTICS INFECTION KILLED MILLIONS INCLUDING KINGS AND BABIES. DYING FROM GUM INFECTION WAS MORE COMMON THAN THE COMMON COLD.
Ha, ha - yeah but pottage gets so boring! ;)
Not very Authentic, they didnt have SUV's back then. Where is your horse?
bet your targets dont last long lol
