Welcome back to Travels with my Dad! It’s the 5th out of 7 episodes in this series and if we’re honest, this is the one Dane and I were looking forward to the most - because Dad had NO IDEA it was coming. Plus, as an animal lover this is a dream come true for Dad! (ok fine, and for me)
We’re in the Malaysia part of Borneo, taking a 3 day, 2 night river safari with Borneo Eco Tours and everything is taken care of, completely stress free and such an incredible experience. The tour is a combination of safari river cruises, guided exploring and short walks while staying in the rainforest Taking a tour is the only real option to really get out and see the wildlife, as you’ll pretty quickly see, Kurt is a legend and knows all the best spots to go and looked after us from start to finish. Before we went deep into the rain forest though we got to learn more about the orangutans of Borneo, which are sadly endangered. As part of the tour we stopped at Sepilok Orangutan Rehab Centre to see how they’re being prepared to go back into the wild, to increase their numbers and keep them thriving.
Then it was time to head onto the boat and make our way 2.5 hours up into the rain forest to Sukau rainforest lodge, an award winner and the only National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World in Malaysia! Sleeping in the rain forest with monkeys around, wild orangutans in the trees, the river running in the distance - it’s perfection and the staff are SO lovely

Sandakan has some really dark history from WW2.
The orangutan is my spirit animal. Seeing the orangutans in the wild would be a dream come true.
The rain reminded me of being up in the Daintree forrest in the wet season.
Definitely some intense history there! Was humbling to hear/learn about it! Really hope you get to make that dream a reality someday 😊

The Rainforest! What an interesting trip. I've been to the Amazon Rainforest in Peru. This vlog brought back those memories as the two places look nearly identical. Incredible wildlife! I hope you guys see all Big 5!
Oh we're a bit jealous you've been to the Amazon!! That's on our bucketlist for sure (at least we kind of know what to expect now!)

Sandakan! My mum's family's home. And yes, it really is such a tiny town haha looking at you driving along it really doesn't look to have changed that much. Strong ANZAC links here! this was the beginning of one of the infamous Death Marches - there's a church in Sandakan that the Australian POW families helped to build in remembrance.

Been there, Sepilok in 1987. The place looks same as old days except for the cafe. Remember one of orang utan took away my mom's handbag. Luckily the staff there got it back😅
I haven't had the chance to go to Sabah yet, but I have been to Sarawak about 24 years ago, went to The orang utang sanctuary in Semenggoh and my mom was peed on...
So glad she got it back! They did warn us we could have encounters like that 🙈

Sepilok and Semenggoh are so similar. I had near the same experience in Serawak. Bako national park in Serawak is also very much worth visiting.

This is very fun! I love it. I remembered a friend of mine who already visited Borneo before. He says, "Patience, my friend, and binoculars are your best companions." It seems like an interesting country that I would wish for my dart to land and take my quest in finding the big five!
You definitely need patience but it's SO rewarding when you finally spot something! Hopefully your dart lands there soon!
Sandakan is in Sabah ....one of states in Malaysia situated on the big island of Borneo. Borneo is shared between two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak and Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Glad you made time to visit Sabah.....its beautiful and very different experience....

Sandakan is my parent's hometown (migrated to Melbourne in the 90s) so my siblings and I got dragged to Sepilok every trip back as kids! We completely took it for granted of course. My husband and I made a trip back more recently and stayed in that resort too, so there are so many mems in this video for me!
Ps. You must try the Agathe croissants from South Melbourne Market next time! Authentically French 👌🏼
Dragged to Sepilok 😂 We would've been the same as kids, but what a place to visit as an adult! Our mouths are watering at the thought of an authentic french croissant, definitely putting this on the list for our next trip - thank you!
