This isn't the most exciting, entertaining or fun to watch channel but it is the most important channel to watch to learn and improve your photography. Condensed with information and no worthless gear talk, this channel is a true Art class.
I agree, Ryan. UA-cam approaches photography and other skills generally as a quick fix. “Just do this and you’ll take amazing photographs.” Alister is not pretending to achieve this. It’s the exploring, the journey, the thinking about our photography and asking questions.
@@hnahler Thanks guys. Anyone offering quick fixes is ultimately doing the student a disservice. Creativity takes time, I was 50 years old and shooting for over 15 years before I made the real connections with myself and began to be truly expressive and creative.
@@Alister_Benn and don’t take it the wrong way when I say your channel isn’t exciting or most fun to watch. It can be if you understand the value and importance of the information you so kindly share.
I heard about your work on The Photographic Eye. This is my first exposure to your videos. Great stuff, clearly presented, no filler. I'll be back. Thanks so much!
This presentation has helped me realise that I'm on a 'good' track when it comes to expressing myself with photography. I've gradually become less obsessed over taking pics while trying to appreciate a location. Exploring has kind of been a constant driver - and it's so reassuring to hear you talk about this here. Will start taking notes the way you suggest. Thank you so much for your insights on the personal development side of this pursuit.
“I don’t want you to be Alister Benn clones…”. I love this!! I think what I appreciate most about your approach to photography is exactly this. You can appreciate each individual’s point of view when looking at what they made - as long as someone is true to them self and not trying to copy another person’s approach. In my opinion 20 people can photograph the exact same scene and all have completely different photographs in the end and each one can be stunning in its own way.
Yet another great video, thank you Alister. Really enjoying this series you have put together. Well, back to rewatch the series and wait for next week.
I found that what you teach is so valuable! You are a great teacher!! Bought your book “the colour of meaning” just last week. It will take some time for me to read it because I’m burned out and reading affects my tired brain to much. It’s also not in my language (I’m Swedish) so that also takes a lot of effort, but so far I’ve enjoyed the book very much! Love the pictures in this video! Thank you for using your time to teach about photography, these lessons are so helpful!
Enjoying this new series immensely. Having read your books and seen many of your videos, this is very helpful in drawing everything together. Thank you.
Such a helpful and insightful look at the process. I loved last week's note-taking approach, and this is an excellent follow-on, and not JUST because it validates my theory that compositions are "felt" and then you can go back and explain why you think it works based on the established rules.
Thank you Alister for another great informative video. I’m always inspired to pick the camera up and engage with it and the subject I want to photograph, Your Spanish photos are gorgeous 👍
Great video. After watching the video I started thinking about how does emotionally state at the time influence your compositions on the day and creativity as a whole. Personally I think your emotionally state plays a big part on how you want to portray any subject matter, be it landscapes or any other subject matter.
Very very nice images Allister. As always you make me think. I can see something in most of my images but I wonder if others see what I do. Alway shoot for yourself is what I've done for years. Maybe I'm ahead of the game like most of the great artists were lol. When I'm dead and buried someone might find my work and say this guy's was onto something lol.
Really enjoyed that video Alister even though I'm familiar by now with your "5 triggers". Seeing how you have applied those triggers is very helpful. I notice that your images tend to generally have subdued contrast - certainly compared to my own style. Is this done consciously by you in post or do you tend to subconsciously seek low contrast compositions. I'm curious.
Great seascape photos and video. But could you please bump up the recording volume. If you are watching on a small speaker device it is a bit low. Your 'Highland Toffee' voice doesn't come over well or you could fill your studio with helium 🙂

100% if you’re open to that. I think a lot of frustration in the field is caused by not listening to our gut
VEry interesting! And the photos are amazing! Congratulations!

Very nice information !
Based on your t-shirt, you seem to have great musical taste too!
❤️🤘💯 I think so 😎😀
Great.... Very helpful....

I do find it's so much easier to get out there in bad weather when there's another photographer involved.
No YYZ lesson? WTF?!! Great stuff as usual, Al.

Thanks for that. We mix the audio professionally and check it on multiple devices, it seems perfect from our side and I usually listen on my phone.
@@Alister_Benn on my tablet I have to put your volume up to 100%. Nick Pages 65% it might be the base in your voice.
I'm afraid that's true, I always have to pump up the volume. Thankfully the content is worth listening to!
