Soodhu Kavvum has to be one of the best non-star tamil film ever made. It also had huge impact on the industry that how can a short film director from naalaya iyakunar make a movie about kidnapping with the sense of humor. It's still dream for many other upcoming young director to give debut film llike Soodhu Kavvum. And have to mention the dark humors in that movie is top notch till date💯

    My answer is Uriyadi
When the movie released I was a teenager and the newspaper posters seemed like a college movie and not anything else, I did not go to big screens for that but when I watched the movie I got to know a whole new way of story telling, like how good a scene can be placed and how politics can affect a college student directly. I really liked the movie and the originality of that one and I think the dialogues also had a great role to play and damn that interval scene. So yeah Uriyadi is my choice.

Eeram - Director Arivazhagan's debut movie. I don't why nobody talks about the technical finesse and the brilliant cinematography of the film. Despite its lesser known casting, the screenplay was razor sharp.

I think Pizza by Karthik Subbaraj is what impacted tamil movies for ever. The movie was shown as a horror movie but as you watch it you understand the layers of a pizza delivery man’s basic needs regarding love and greed. His plan sets him up and this changed the tamil film industry as we know today. The films before had some kind of pattern but this film broke that barrier. It allowed for new directors to show their new ideas and work on some of the greatest films we know today.

I wanna be honest here. MOODAR KOODAM is a path breaking dark comedy subject to be filmed. Mostly new faces casted, director himself taking a role to act, multi layers added for limited budget film. These things were amazing. Every character was engaging. Even that little girl and that contract thief. It was orgasmic to be honest. Rewatched with my siblings and cousins and was very relevant and comical

And ofcourse it is and still will be one of the best Albums of ARR, No joke I still vibe to 'enakoru girlfriend' and 'Ale ale'. While breaking the star system, it reflects not only on the actors but other categories as well such as direction (Prabhu Soloman), Cinematography (Sukumar) and even music (D Imman; probably his biggest break). The movie sets you in a mood, the travels throughout the movie. Such an impactful film with such an after taste. The song still lingers in my ears as I reminisce that good time, when I was overjoyed in discovering and experiencing a movie like Mynaa.

Jigarthanda by Karthi Subbaraj created a new style in movie making. Especially the staging of the film such as the long shot of Sethu (Bobby simha) walking to the toilet and almost being killed by one of the hitsmen from opponent gang was a very gripping and memorable scene thus far. And through this film, we got to see Bobby simha as a promising actor due to his great performance as a madurai gangster. Contrary to popular opinions, one of the best debut films that failed to make it to your video according to me, would be ‘Kolamavu Kokila’. Even though it was a film starring the lady superstar Nayanthara and a somewhat-familiar Yogi Babu, it was a total game changer for the role of comedy and comedians in a film. Nelson with his peculiar style of ‘dark-comedy’ established his territory in Tamil cinema. He made it clear that a film needn’t have a ‘Comedian’ per say. Any actor could inject humour and any comedian could deliver a terrific performance. The film though had slight resemblance to the Hollywood film ‘We’re the Millers’ starring Jennifer Anniston and Jason Sudeikis in the lead roles, it had a unique genre defying trait that could break clichés and had an everlasting impact on the ‘comedy’ genre and whole of Tamil cinema. The film was driven by a set of new and unestablished actors such as Arun Alexander, Redin Kingsley, Anbu Thasan, to name a few, alongside the lead cast. Yogi Babu reinvented himself to something more than a comedian - a ‘performer’ . Nelson’s ability to extract raw comedy from mundane everyday things is applaudable. This is my honest opinion.
    Thank you.

Lucia originally a kannada film taken with no budget. It was a public funded movie. This movie made all the audience drop their jaws in the last 15 minutes but I heard the question right tamil industry- so my answer will be enakul oruvan with sidharth in the lead role. The movie is a very simple story but the way every shot is taken and the beautiful suprise elements in the movie makes it my choice. It has not been recognised by many people but this movie is a perfect example for how a movie can be ended differently . The movie is on a very simple node but the ending just changes the whole point of how we were seeing the movie from the beginning. The director has symbolised such a simple concept with a mind bending story line. The story is about a man in a village who owns a takies and has insomnia he buys a drug which leads him into lucid dreaming. I think more movies like this will make tamil audience respect movies for the story and it will make aspiring directors new ways to think and end movies in a different way and grab that audiences attention.

in my opinion it would be attakathi,
Because its highly highly relatable, it just shows the life of college students and the way they show that in scenes, where he hangs on a bus to spitting a bonda and running t get that bonda again, its just one of the most simple yet changing film i have seen

Attakathi. I have never seen such a refreshing feel good movie that portrayed a life of a simple, lower middle class, small town guys life. After attakathi, pa. Ranjith’s graph is something we all know. He has become a trendsetter in making films for the oppressed.

    Visaranai by Vetrimaran
Without proper star value and without a proper commercial story and plot it yet managed to reach oscars and also by not being a complete art film it was also a big hit among audience and Visaranai was the first film which actually gave confidence to make raw and true cinema

Aranya Kandam - Pasupati especially when he escaped from Jeep and U1 enrollment of his BGM on his run and simultaneous dialogue towards his Target. Plus+1 Ajay's dialogue inside the car ultimately resembles the nature's also the police man who do kick-start the conversation with Pasupathy.. Flawless conversation

    I suggest Naveen's "Moodar Koodam" & Nithilan's "Kurangu Bommai".
Moodar Koodam - Undoubtedly Tamil Cinema's most experimental movie. Director's debut. A very very simple story. Full of technical detailing. All the "munkadhai"s only in songs. And each one with a different emotion. Taken the Dark Humour to the next level. Razor sharp dialogues. Great music.
Kurangu Bommai - Director's debut. Excellent writing. Great performances from every actor, especially Bharathi Raja, Kumaravel, Vidharth. "Party varave illa ye nae" This single line from the movie excites me to watch the movie again and again.
Both are yet to give their 2nd movie. I think their debuts changed the Tamil Cinema to an extent. I strongly hope that their 2nd movie will change the level of Cinema for sure.
Also Subramaniapuram & Aaranya Kaandam. But these 2 have already got a lot of attention from the major audience as well.

Which best non-star film changed the Tamil film industry and why?
    Pariyerum Perumal
Story is the king of any film and this film was no different. The film had a strong narrative that kept us engaged throughout. The way the director portrayed the nuances of caste discrimination and the performances of every single person in this film was exceptional. I couldn't see one unnecessary shot or any exaggeration in the performances. The director, Mari Selvaraj, proved that he has the ability to extract the best out of people. The sound "karuppi" in the voice of kathir is ringing in my ears as I write this.
Mari Selvaraj demonstrated you can make a tamil film click where the hero does not need a mass introduction song, does not have a love interest, in fact gets thrashed by people. Sounds alien, but he did exactly that.
The film was technically sound too!

    2. Pudhupettai - An another epitome of a local gangster movies which completely narrates from a slum dweller to a powerful mob kingpin and finally ended up in the warmth of his enemies.

"Kulla Nari Koottam" is my answer as the story has not star value to it and All the actors are new faces and very much realistic, very much connected to their roles and characters also to the audience (especially the hero's family) as the story itself felt like happening in the very next door for us. With a low budget they made a feel good movie.
