people complaining how mark wasn't thorough enough in his review, and yet a lot of commenters completely ignored one fact that Mark mentioned, the most important fact in my opinion. You can only download games off the marketplace. no emulators, no homebrew.
Exactly. I would buy one, but only because I collect consoles and microconsoles. I purchased the Ouya with the intention of using it to play emulators and ROMs, but got impatient (as I backed it on Kickstarter) and ended up just building my own gaming PC. By the time my Ouya had arrived, I already had an emulator for every console that one was available for and was able to play them all, including PS2. My Ouya hasn't seen the light of day.
SupraViperhead I use my OUYA for all my on-tv emulation, a PC is better of course but then it would be a huge intimidating tower in the living room instead of a little cube. My wife would kill me... oh and i can use all my spare ps3 controllers on it.
Well, GS doesn't taste as good as a pack of Juicy Fruit, and they are more expensive (20 bucks for one stick), but you can't play Fists of Awesome on Juicy Fruit.
Ladderadder Mcglitternips Well, since China generally doesn't give a damn about copyright, they won't do the "condensed marketplace" thing and will just enable users to pirate whatever they want. Also android portables (AKA "an android tablet with gamepad buttons and analog sticks") are fairly successful.
+Ladderadder Mcglitternips I actually got on my knees right now as I'm typing it (JXD 7800b). It's actually pretty damn good if you're into emulation because it runs pretty much everything up to and including PSP fairly well. Do look at Ashens' review of the thing if you're interested.
Hey everyone, I don't know about any other stores but if you go to GAME in the UK (I go to bootle)then you can get this for £22 with the case. The usual price for just the console is £28 and £4 for the case, but the case used to be £15 and if you got the both of them then you got a £10 discount off for the case. But even though the case is now £4 the bundle is still on because of a glitch in the system. So The Case (£4) - £10 = 0 With £6 Leftover. Use the leftovers to get the actual console and it ends up being £22 instead of £32. So I got a £10 online. But I probably didn't need it much as the two (probably) best games on the system (SHADOWGUN & Smash Cops) Are Totally Free. The SHADOWGUN Expansion even comes free with the game.
I did that thank you ThatBananaGuy it worked aha i traded 5 ps3 games and asked so got for 22 quid and ps3 games at 23 so i had a quid left over :p so i got it for free pretty much aha
I like how you acknowledge that there are some great games on mobile. Especially since similar platforms like Android TV let you play them with a controller.
Hey Mark! Just wanted to chirp in and comment regarding your final statements in the video. There is an SD card slot on there right? You can actually put emulators in their .APK format onto that SD card, and install them through a file browser right onto the GameStick. One of the apps you can install is SixAxisController, which not only turns your PS3 controller into a native gamepad, but also allows you to map touch controls to the buttons, triggers and analog sticks! Even games that do not support controllers are 100% usable with the PS3 controller! These 2 things, I think, would make you a very happy camper. :D
You ever thought of doing a review on the Xperia PLAY? Been using mine since its release and have zero plans on upodating it even after playing with an HTC One for a week. I love playing all my old emulators. NES,SNES, GEN, Master System, TG16, PS1, N64, CPS1,CPS2, NEOGEO, NEOGEO CD.... list goes on. Love this damn thing.
Yes it can. If you actually looked up some info on the Vita TV, might know it does play a number of the games with touch controls and how. Though it won't play all of them.
Supposedly you will be able to use any Dualshock 3 controller with the Vita TV, so it stands to reason that once the PS4 comes out, you will probably be able to use Dualshock 4 controllers (which have touchpads) on it as well. And even without the touchpad you still have access to some good games, and all of the PSP and PSone games.
Some pretty good points.. I have one (Kickstarter backer) and find all of your praise pretty spot on. About the biggest problem I'm noticing is the availability is crumbling pretty hard. Gamestop had them but I notice the site says they no longer carry them. Amazon is asking like $119 for them (and this when there was a sale on Ouya for $69 and that included a $25 gift certificate toward games besides). Hate to say it but customers on the fence should probably snag one while they can cause it's only getting harder and harder to do so.
Carlanga Holy smokes, you're right. Picked up another one cause, well, why not for that price? Even Amazon has em for $69 now (down from $120). Looks like inventory liquidation time :\
Not in the way you might think.. you could plug into your computer monitor if it has an HDMI in, and you could power from your computer. But if you are talking about an HDMI port on your actual computer then no, that is just an out for your graphics processing unit.
Mark, review an Ouya. Also, look on the net retail outlets like Target are supposed to get them. Looks like lots of the same games, but Ouya is working on getting more indies.
@@beniswenis2714 By far the worst controller ever, but the dock was kinda neat. Thankfully I had the opportunity to get the bootloader unlocked while it was still possible (servers are long dead), so I was able to flash a generic Android build, which left me with a fairly decent tv dongle for the time. Stock OS was trash though.
You totally need to review the nvidia shield it is an Xbox 360 controller that has a screen attached and ps3 layout for the sticks and buttons it played every android game ever and even let's you map buttons to the touch screen or the tilt sensors
New subscriber here. -love the show! I'd love to see a comparison of this system and Ouya -Classic Game Room style! Both seem to be a very nice option for retro gaming using emulators, but I'm not clear on Lord Carnage's views on emulation per se.
Being a PS3 player I can easily say that this actually REALLY interests me for some peculiar reason. I might pick one up - looks like it could be a lot of fun.
That's what I already do with a laptop and corded 360 controller; connected with the HDMI out and sound just to the aux of the receiver out from the headphone port.
if not for the fact that I have my old PC hooked up to my TV, I would probably be interested in something like this or the Ouya. Those would be more user friendly to do via TV, but having the PC is pretty kickass.
Sounds interesting, but can you backup and restore the games? I mean what happens if you erase a game to make room for something else and then by the time you decide you want to play it again, the company has gone bust? (not that I'm hoping they will, I'm just saying that it's a possibility) What if your Gamestick dies and you buy a new one, but your favorite game is no longer available? Will you be able to pull out your backup and transfer your games back to the console? With all the older systems, you have the games on cartridge or disc and can play them for as long as you have a working system, regardless if the company is still around or not. I wouldn't take any new system seriously unless you could have the same assurance that the games you buy will always be available to you.
Good review. I hope systems like this and ouya can find a market, I've had an ouya for a while. After some updates I've even having lots of fun with it.
Awesome to see this kinda stuff out there. I might make a game for something like the gamestick or ouya someday. Triple A consoles and the major Handhelds always have so many complications and license stuff. Plus they prbly wouldn't accept my retro approach to this stuff xD
If I wasn't pretty satisfied with the games I've got now (Mainly PS2/PS3) I'd consider picking this up. If Sega does get on board and port things such as Outrun and Afterburner II I'd buy one for sure. Right now a Genesis is the next system on my list, but right now my money is mostly going to my LEGO hobby, my 50's inspired cars need a dealership now!
Good review, it is so much better to run CFW 1.4 and get full Play support. That way you are only limited via Android standards. Specially now it is $20. Also yeah Rip Tide is pretty fun. Edit: Also you can get Genesis games on it via CFW 1.4. :)

Pretty cool for what it is tbh, runs the games themselves pretty impressively too it seems for being basically nothing more than a Flash Drive with additional hardware inside.
If that's the case, you're doing something wrong. The emulators on the Ouya, especially the .Emu releases, work flawlessly and don't need special rom sets.
+Jawaun Monger Thats way more expensive than the Gamestick though. The Gamestick works by itself but for Moga you have to buy a Smartphone which is very expensive. There are way better things out there
Can the hardware power be compared with the Wii or is it considerable weaker? Can you load software onto it that isn't in the app store? Open source that you compile yourself? Are there any good media players on it that play the usual formats? Is there a UA-cam app?
I have the Ouya, it is good, the only problem is you cant login without a credit card and you cant put google play store (unless you root it) and almost all the games are free to play (with micro transactions) and some of them are only trials, I didnt found any game which was fully free :/ (but in the play store there are many)
Does it allow installation of third party applications? If someone makes a custom OS for it that does with a handy controller enabled menu interface that also lets you play movies on xbmc with a micro sd expansion slot, then it would be a must buy for EVERYONE!
I'm really surprised by this review. It seems slightly incomplete and rushed. I know you can do better, Mark. Want console quality games on this thing? No problem! Download an emulator for your favorite pre-2002 game console (N64, _Sega Genesis_, Playstation, _Atari 2600_ etc...)! And, perfectionist that I am, I'll mention that it's the _Google Play Store_, not the "Android Marketplace". As of March 6, 2012, there has been no such supported service as the "Android Market".

Matteo Ferrazzi uhhh... I fail to see your point. All of the emulators people should be downloading _are_ on the Android Marketplace (AKA Google Play).
You can emulate a ton of sega genesis on that thing. With an additional 32 Gig memory card you can store a lot of rom-sets form different systems. Personally I would buy that stick just for the emulators.
the diffrence between a ouya and a gamestick is a ouya has a better cpu and has the tegra 3 for a GPU so it can do alot better game wise. also, it is possible to run mega drive (or genesis where you are from) games on a gamestick, just ditch the whole market, sideload a normal launcher, and install a genesis emulator for android, than buy a adapter...also snes, nes..and even atari 5200 :)
I don't see the point... The Adreno 320 on my S4 is far more powerful, I have access to all those games and incidentally.. MegaDrive/Genesis, N64, PS1, SNES and NES emulators.... All working fine with the PS3 controller and using the MHL out to the TV... If you have a half decent phone, the Ouya and the Gamestick are a total waste of money IMHO.
Then you're not the market that these companies are trying to appeal to. They're trying to appeal to the people who don't already have the hardware to run casual games.
I hope you guys get a Ouya and review I have one and like it. Would like to see what you think about it. Plus there are some sega games on there Sonic 4 and Sonic CD plus you can use the Big E with it......
damn, i thought they would postpone the gamestick again. they did it september, and even august. well, time to buy one. probably gonna play hacked games from the normal android market with button support. i think black ops zombies does and that will rock.
Most of the ouya when you open it up is empty space. But if you where to remove both cases the ouya's mobo would be about the size of 2 gamesticks mobo's. Both systems are very portable.I have yet to try the gamestick outside of a place that does not have a internet connection but with the ouya there is some DRM that is defaulty there that developers have to break inorder to play paid versions of games online which is really bad since the company behind ouya claims it to be open.
god, i remember watching this guy when i was like 7-8 years old, this aged like fine wine for me

All working fine with the PS3 controller and using the MHL out to the TV... If you have a half decent phone, the Ouya and the Gamestick are a total waste of money IMHO.
Then you're not the market that these companies are trying to appeal to. They're trying to appeal to the people who don't already have the hardware to run casual games.
zicari101 personally, I prefer Nintendo controllers over other controllers.
Mark, do you still have your Gamestick?
was there any reason to release this one, seeing how ouya and nvidia shield are already out and they're not particularly popular?
You guys remember those consoles where it's a controller that plugs into the TV directly? These are like the modern equivalent.
Aw man, there's already a game starring a lumberjack out there?
My idea was a platformer, but still, that sucks.
Can you use your Google Play account and import the games you have already purchased?
That looks amazing. Gotta see the price tag on that.
You didn't review anything before quite Mark
Just bought mine for $16.97 at Gamestop.
I miss CGR....
whatever happened to him?
