Sir Peter O'Sullevan......'I have to say with firm conviction you'll never see a greater jockey than Lester Keith Piggott.' What better endorsement could any jockey wish for coming from the voice of racing. Brilliant. Thanks.👌❤ And of all the people that receive knighthoods there is none more deserving than Lester for his unparalleled services to racing, so M'am, pull your finger out and add him quickly to your list before it's too late.😁😁😁
Brough Scott once said of Lester’s unique mindset “He was tall for a jockey and should have weighed at least 11 stone. But Lester basically declared war on his own body to ride at a few pounds over 8 stone.” To be so strong and fit, I believe L. Piggott is possibly the greatest athlete I’ve ever seen. Not many people have the will to maintain such punishing life for so long let alone be the greatest of all time.
The only one way to keep the weight in check is to keep riding on a daily basis and ride winners . After a while, your body starts to shrink and your weight stabilizes . Your legs and arms get thinner and over the years you don't feel hungry anymore. Richard Hughes, himself fell into that category. Having said that, you have to be thin boned and not too muscular. There's is only so much your body can endure.. I think you can cope with being 10 pounds underweight.. Jockeys are used to waste from 4 to 5 pounds within 2 hours or so everyday. They loose about a kilo, jogging around the racecourse with 5 layers of clothes on including a pair of gloves for about 45 minutes. Then they step into the steambox and sweat another kilo. After that, they get a proper massage to make their bodies supple and relaxed. Oliver peltier does it everyday. If he let go he be around 63 kilos in a week's time. He weighs 58 as he wakes up in the morning which means he needs to waste 2 kilos to ride at 57. Over the years he put on about 5 kilos and his minimum riding weight must be 56. In his twenties he could do 52.
Sir Peter had it spot on , Lester was The Greatest , brought a tear to my eye seeing old stone face smiling after winning on Rodrigo and i remember i had a huge wager on him , something massive long before Lester was booked all prices from 40s down
There's been many a fair and fine rider about. Fred archer topped his Era. Then came sir Gordon Richards . Lester did the same in his time, riding big winners here, there and everywhere changing jockey's balance and often getting jockey's off balance too 😀 . He paved the way for jockeys agent's in Europe. He never stopped counting his money and decided he was better off going freelance than work on a retainer's basis putting up with all the useless dogs just because they carried one particular pair of colors. He knew that the best way to win a race was to make sure you sat on the best chance. Basically he won his races before the rides publication day.
Agreed. Sadly, I said the same about Sandy Barclay. I always wondered exactly what went wrong. Bad decisions, weight problems and bad habits were the rumours but I never really found out.
The Derek Thompson video was a updated version of Lester's Classic Story the original 1986 version was narrated by Peter O'Sullevan I have the Thompson one on DVD while I have the original 1986 Peter O'Sullevan version on VHS
ps, if i ever become a billionaire i will spend a large proportion trying to expunge the horrible thommo :( a blight on all things racing ........who's gunna get there , in the yella colors ......that's one for the judge

Also liked it when he won on rodrigo de triano the 2000 guineas.
Lester was the greatest no question if osion Murphy can fight his demons he can scale the same heights what a talent.
